    Six-pack for Saturday

-- American League had 8-5 edge on interleague play's first night this season. Over was 8-3-2 in the games, 6-0 when a DH was used, 2-3-2 in the games played in NL parks.

-- Red Sox will play second day/night doubleheader in three days Saturday; been a rough week for weather in the east.

-- Royals have quietly won five of their last six games.

-- Nationals' top three starting pitchers are now all on DL; can't remember seeing a staff ravaged this much by injuries.

-- A's took lot of Barry Zito's pitches Friday; he gave up 7 runs to old teammates, walking seven in four innings.

-- Lost lot of respect for the NBA this week; team advanced in playoffs, largely because one of their subs cheapshotted other team's star, and league let them benefit from it.

                  2007 Preakness Stakes

                  Top Contenders

Circular Quay – Trainer: Todd A Pletcher; Jockey: John R. Velazquez

Is a dead late closer who finished 6 th in the Kentucky Derby. Has bumped heads with all of the top 3 year-olds in the country now for some time, and should improve off of that run in the Derby. There is speed in this race to help his late kick, but will need a clean trip.

Curlin – Trainer: Steve Asmussen; Jockey: Robby Albarado

Was the superstar in the making leading up to the Kentucky Derby, winning his first three career starts by a combined 28.5 lengths, but encountered some trouble in the Derby and finished a distance third behind Street Sense. The 1 3/16 miles is not a problem for this guy with the likes of Mr. Prospector and Deputy Minister in his bloodlines. Has shown great versatility in his running style, and gets a chance to turn the tables on the favorite.

Hard Spun – Trainer: Larry Jones; Jockey: Mario Pino

Has really stepped up his game in his last two starts, hitting triple digit speed figures for the first time in his career. He was the closest of anyone to Street Sense in the Derby, running 2 nd and only losing to him by a littler over 2 lengths. Has shown he can win on or off the pace, and cannot be ignored in this spot as a hot horse.

King of the Roxy – Trainer: Todd A Pletcher; Jockey: Garrett Gomez

Did not run in the Kentucky Derby in order to be freshened up for this race. Has been a very consistent horse, finishing 1 st or 2 nd in 5 out of his 7 career starts. Had some distance questions answered last time out with a great 2 nd place finished in the 1 1/8 mile Santa Anita Derby. He has shown great versatility in his running styles and enters this race sharp.

Street Sense – Trainer: Carl Nafzger; Jockey: Calvin Borel

He is the real deal, and proved that in the Kentucky Derby just two weeks ago. He won 132 nd Derby in convincing fashion, earning him a top career speed figure in the process. He should once again have a pace to run at in this race, and has developed one of the games best closing kicks. All eyes are going to be on him, and the way he is running right now they should have something to look at when turning for home.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Preakness Stakes Preview

Street Sense’s run for the Triple Crown continues this weekend as he heads to Pimlico Race Course for the 132nd running of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday.

Street Sense pulled off a masterful run in the Kentucky Derby that saw him storm through the entire field and move up from 19th spot to win the race by 2 ½ lengths at the wire. Even though all of the horse-racing handicapping history was against Street Sense in the Derby, he came out on top. Street Sense won as the favorite, which is surprisingly a rare feat. He became the first-ever Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner to also win the Derby, and he broke the losing curse on horses that only ran two prep races before the Derby.

However, none of that will matter unless Street Sense can do it again in the Preakness. Hardly anyone can remember who won the Derby or the Preakness two or three years ago, but even the most casual sports fan can probably tell you that Affirmed was the last Triple Crown winner back in 1978.

Street Sense will be running against a different field of horses in the Preakness with only four horses that took part in the Derby also running in the Preakness. The number of horses in the running is considerably smaller with only nine thoroughbreds entered in the Preakness, compared to 20 horses that ran the Derby. Another important difference in the Preakness is the distance. The Derby is a 1 1/4 mile race, while the Preakness is a little shorter at 1 3/16 mile. This could be a factor in the race if Street Sense falls behind the pack again and has less time to make up ground.

Aside from Street Sense, the other three Derby entrants returning for the Preakness are Hard Spun, Curlin and Circular Quay. Hard Spun was the runner-up in the Derby after he was unable to hold the lead despite jumping out in front of the rest of the pack. A shorter distance may be just what Hard Spun needs to jump out to another lead and hold on to it this time.

Curlin was considered one of the favorites in the Derby, but everyone seems to have forgotten about him in the Preakness after he finished third in Kentucky. The Derby was only Curlin’s fourth race of his short career, as he did not race as a two-year-old. Curlin coming up short in the Derby should not have been much of a surprise, as the last horse to win the Derby in only his fourth-ever race was Apollo back in 1882. Prior to his third-place finish in the Derby, Curlin was undefeated so he’s definitely a contender to upset Street Sense at Pimlico.

Circular Quay is one of two horses entered by Todd Pletcher in the Preakness. Circular Quay was considered to be Pletcher’s best shot at finally winning the Derby, but he ended up a disappointing sixth. Pletcher’s other chance at a winner at Pimlico is King of the Roxy. He was held out of the Derby and is considered a longshot to break through the Preakness field.

The rest of the Preakness field includes Mint Slewlep, Xchanger, Flying First Class and CP West. Out of those four horses, the one with the greatest chance at an upset appears to be Xchanger. Xchanger could have a slim advantage over some of the other horses in the field as he already has a win at Pimlico this year in the Federico Tesio Stakes.

Don’t be too quick to misjudge the five horses that skipped the Derby. Last year’s Preakness winner Bernardini did not race in the Derby, but that did not stop him from posting a winning time of 1:54.65. One other important note about Bernardini; he started last year’s Preakness out of the No. 8 post position. When this year’s positions were drawn on Thursday, the No. 8 post just happened to go to Street Sense.

If Street Sense can repeat Bernardini’s win, the horse racing world will get to see a Triple Crown attempt at the Belmont Stakes for the first time since Smarty Jones came up short in 2004.

Preakness Stakes Post Positions and Odds:

                  1. Mint Slewlep – 30/1
                  2. Xchanger – 15/1
                  3. Circular Quay – 8/1
                  4. Curlin – 7/2
                  5. King of the Roxy – 12/1
                  6. Flying First Class – 20/1
                  7. Hard Spun – 5/2
                  8. Street Sense – 7/5
                  9. CP West – 20/1

Top 5: Hardest and easiest interleague schedules

Sometimes a good schedule can make all the difference.

Schedules are usually balanced in interleague play – teams from each respective division play the same teams a similar number of times. The advent of interleague play, however, caused an imbalance.

There are only so many interleague games to go around. Regional rivalries account for two of the five scheduled series, leaving a large selection of teams, good and bad, for the nine remaining games.

Take last season’s Colorado Rockies team for example: they weren’t considered a strong team, finishing the year 10 games under .500, but they were far and away the best National League squad in interleague play at 11-4. They joined the San Francisco Giants, three games behind the Rockies at 8-7, as the only two teams in the league with an interleague record above .500.

The main reason both teams were successful was an easy interleague schedule relative to the rest of the NL. Both teams played their games largely against teams from the AL West – considered the weakest of the AL’s three divisions (Colorado played one series against the Toronto Blue Jays).

Who has the advantage this year? Let’s break things down with a list of the five easiest and hardest schedules in interleague play.

                          EASY

                          1. Cleveland Indians
(Cincinnati Reds, @ Cincinnati, @ Florida Marlins, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, @ Washington Nationals)

Atlanta is the only team on Cleveland’s schedule that now has a winning record, and the Indians get to play them at home. Six games against the Reds also help matters.

                          2. Houston Astros
(Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, @Seattle Mariners, @Los Angeles Angels, @Texas )

The Astros are a prime candidate to be this year’s Rockies, enjoying a heavy dose of AL West opponents. As an added bonus, they get to play the division’s worst team, the Rangers, twice.

                          3. Florida Marlins
(@ Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Tampa Bay, Cleveland, @Kansas City Royals, @Chicago White Sox)

Nine games against Tampa Bay and Kansas City always help. The Marlins also play their hardest series, against Cleveland, at home.

                          4. New York Yankees
(@New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, Arizona Diamondbacks, Mets, @Colorado)

The six games against the Mets certainly won’t be easy, but if the Yankees can split the season series there, they have an excellent chance of finishing with one of the best interleague records in the American League.

                          5. San Diego Padres
(@Seattle, Seattle, @Tampa Bay, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox)

Not a bad schedule as far as National League teams go – it’s tough to avoid all the powerhouses when you move over to the American League, but at least the Padres get to play the Red Sox at home. The other three teams on the list aren’t exactly scaring anyone this year.

                          HARD

                          1. Atlanta Braves
                          (@Boston, @Minnesota Twins, @Cleveland, Boston, Detroit Tigers)

Hands down the hardest interleague schedule in the majors – all four of these teams have the potential to play in October. The Braves also have to play three of their five interleague series on the road. They also have to play the NL-leading Mets 18 times this season.

                          2. New York Mets
                          (Yankees, @Detroit, @Yankees, Minnesota, Oakland)

No breaks on the interleague schedule for the Mets. They face all four AL playoff teams from last season. The games at Detroit and New York are also part of a grueling nine-game road trip that has the Mets traveling to Los Angeles between the two interleague series.

                          3. San Francisco Giants
                          (@Oakland, Oakland, Toronto, @Boston, Yankees)

The Red Sox and the Yankees are always tough games, and the Giants’ games against Oakland are always hard-fought. San Francisco is also risking a run-in with Toronto just as the Jays are getting healthy.

                          4. Pittsburgh Pirates
                          (@Yankees, Texas, White Sox, @Seattle, @Angels)

The Pirates don’t start interleague play until June 8, but they’re getting thrown right into the fire with a voyage to the Bronx. Pittsburgh’s trip to face Seattle and Los Angeles will be just its second time playing on the West Coast this season (the Pirates played a three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers from April 20-22).

                          5. Milwaukee Brewers
                          (Minnesota, @Texas, @Minnesota, @Detroit, Kansas City)

Nine games against Minnesota and Detroit will show just how far the Brewers have come this season. Playing at Texas is no treat either. Finishing off against the Royals keeps this sked from being higher up on the list.
