    Six-pack for Friday

-- Kudos to Mets; all fans at Cub-Met game Wednesday can get free ticket to Minnesota series in mid-June, after the Wednesday game started over three hours late (rain).

-- Red Sox have 9.5-game lead in AL East, look very strong.

-- Fausto Carmona won fifth straight start for surging Tribe Carmona had lost his previous eleven decisions.

-- Lincecum-Oswalt pitcher's duel was something, with only run Lincecum allowed unearned. Giants finally won in 12th.

-- Manny Acta has Nationals battling; they've won five of their last six games, despite lot of pitching injuries.

-- How would you like to have been on a plane to Chicago with Lou Piniella after Cubs blew 5-1 lead in 9th Thursday?

Friday's list of 13: Random thoughts with weekend here

      13) For some bizarre reason, ESPN is televising Class A game that Roger Clemens is pitching Friday night; apparently, they must be out of reruns of Stump the Schwab. My question is this: Do they stay with the game after Clemens leaves?

      12) You could have won major money betting that Utah Jazz would have been first team to reach NBA's Final Four.

      11) David Stern was originally supposed to be in Phoenix for Game 5, but conveniently switched to Cleveland after all the hubbub regarding the Suns' suspensions. Would be curious to see the Suns heirarchy's reaction to all this, behind closed doors-- they have to be pretty damn mad.

      9) Sammy Sosa homered in 45th different big league park, as he hit one at Wide World of Sports in Kissimmee Wednesday

      8) If you see a major league game end 11-8, and none of runs were unearned, you know you had some dreadful pitching.

      7) Rockies have a batting cage under stands at Coors Field, with a live batting practice pitcher, rather than a machine. The Colorado players say the live pitcher helps them.

      6) Reds scored two or less runs in six of nine Bronson Arroyo starts; they're 2-7 in his starts, scoring 9,11 runs in two wins.

      5) Kip Wells of Cardinals had odd statline in last start; don't think I've seen another one like it. He was left in to throw 125 pitches in five innings, going through Dodger lineup 4 times in five innings, yet only allowing five runs.

      4) Cardinals were outscored 42-8 in last five Wells starts.

      3) Met pitcher Jason Vargas was good enough hitter that he occasionally DH'd at Long Beach State.

      2) Texas Rangers, who play home games in Arlington, have a new pitcher named AJ Murray, whose first name is Arlington.

      1) Rest easy, all you 4th and 5th graders; Roy Williams just signed a contract extension that will keep him in Chapel Hill at least until all you little guys get to college. For some reason, Roy is now signed through the 2014-2015 season.

If you're Lebron's teammate, you'll get good shots, but you've got to make them; Hughes was 3-17 from floor in Game 5 loss, now Cleveland needs road win to prevent a pressurized Game 7 at home. Nets scored only six points in fourth quarter last game made just 9-20 foul shots, won anyway; as Cavs shot 33% from floor. Cleveland scored just 81.3 ppg in last three games; they need Hughes or Ilgauskus to step up and have big game.

Stoudemire, Diaw back in Phoenix lineup; Suns almost won the last game despite their absence; coming back from down 3-2 vs solid team like Spurs seems doubtful. Three Suns played 45:45 or more Wednesday, so they figure to be tired; Stoudemire has to stay out of foul trouble and give great performance for Suns to have shot at staying alive. In their three series wins, Spurs shot 33-36-28 foul shots; in two losses, 16-14.

#2 Cleveland Cavaliers at #6 New Jersey Nets
                Game 6 - Friday, May 18th, 7 p.m. Eastern (ESPN)

Cavs star LeBron James had his mind elsewhere during Game 5, as his longtime girlfriend was taken to a hospital from Quicken Loans Arena on a stretcher. She is eight months pregnant with the couple's second child, and it the impact of her departure definitely seemed to affect James' play. "I've got a family at home I need to worry about more than basketball," James said. Look for him to be extra motivated in Game 6 now that his mind is more at ease. SLIGHT EDGE: CAVS
Cleveland let a monster opportunity slip away at the end of Game 5, as no team has ever played worse than New Jersey did down the stretch. The Nets scored only six points in the fourth quarter and made one field goal while also becoming the first team to win a playoff game despite making fewer than half their free throws (9-of-20). Expect that to change big time in Game 6 for the home team. BIG EDGE: NETS
New Jersey is 11-4 ATS in its last 15 games overall.
New Jersey is 15-4 ATS in the last 19 meetings overall.
New Jersey is 8-20-2 ATS in its last 30 Friday games.
Cleveland is 17-6-1 ATS in its last 24 road games.
Cleveland is 15-2-1 ATS in its last 18 Friday games.

SECOND-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

Cleveland leads 3-2 SU (2-3 ATS)
                UNDER 4-1

                5/16/07 - Game 5: New Jersey 83, CLEVELAND 72 (ATS winner: NJ +5.5 | UNDER 182.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nets and Cavs set an NBA playoff record for the lowest-scoring quarter ever in the fourth with a combined 19 points. New Jersey made just one field goal, going 1-of-15 from the field and scoring only six points. Cleveland wasn't much better, totaling 13 points on 3-of-17 shooting. This game had UNDER written all over it from the first quarter on despite 50 points combined in the third. That's when the Nets took charge, outscoring the Cavs 30-20 to take an 18-point lead into the final quarter.

                5/14/07 - Game 4: Cleveland 87, NEW JERSEY 85 (ATS winner: Cleve +3.5 | UNDER 184.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Neither team seemed to want to win this game down the stretch, as both Cleveland's LeBron James and New Jersey's Vince Carter missed critical free throws in the final minutes. Carter then botched a shot for the Nets to tie the game, letting the ball squirt loose and go out of bounds on their final possession when he was double teamed. The trio of Carter, Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson combined to shoot just 23 percent from the field (11-of-48), contributing to an easy UNDER play.

                5/12/07 - Game 3: NEW JERSEY 96, Cleveland 85 (ATS winner: NJ -4.5 | UNDER 186)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: New Jersey got off to a fast start, taking a 12-point lead in the second quarter before Cleveland scored 15 straight to go up, 40-37. The Nets rallied back to take a 45-43 halftime lead and then again extended it to 15 before the Cavs made one last charge early in the fourth, cutting it to four. New Jersey had another answer for Cleveland though and pushed the lead back to double digits to get the win and cover.

                5/8/07 - Game 2: CLEVELAND 102, New Jersey 92 (ATS winner: Cleve -4.5 | OVER 180.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Similar to their first-round series with the Wizards, the Cavs turned it on in the fourth quarter, outscoring New Jersey 28-19 to earn the victory and a cover for their backers. Cleveland's LeBron James scored 25 of his 36 points after halftime and totaled 12 assists to help put the Nets away and push the pace for an easy OVER.

                5/6/07 - Game 1: CLEVELAND 81, New Jersey 77 (ATS winner: NJ +6 | UNDER 184.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Both teams struggled offensively in the lowest-scoring game of the playoffs so far, cashing an easy UNDER. The Nets managed to stay close despite shooting just 37 percent from the field, pulling within 79-77 with 19.5 seconds left on two free throws by Vince Carter. LeBron James answered for Cleveland with the final basket of the game on a driving lineup, and the Cavs held on the win but not the cover.

                REMAINING SCHEDULE

                5/18/07 - Game 6 - Cleveland at NEW JERSEY (ESPN | 7 PM ET)
                5/20/07 - Game 7 - New Jersey at CLEVELAND (TNT | TBD)

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Cleveland wins 2-1 SU (New Jersey 2-1 ATS)
                OVER 2-1

                4/12/07 - CLEVELAND 94, New Jersey 76 (ATS winner: Cleve -6 | UNDER 186)
                1/6/06 - CLEVELAND 96, New Jersey 91 (ATS winner: NJ +6.5 | OVER 186.5)
                12/20/06 - NEW JERSEY 113, Cleveland 111 (ATS winner: NJ -1 | OVER 186)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The Cavs have turned things around against the Nets over the last two years, winning four of the last five meetings, including two of three this season. New Jersey had won the previous five meetings and is still 12-2 ATS in the last 14 games between the teams, including 7-1 in Cleveland. All eyes will be on Cavs star LeBron James, who averaged 30.3 points in the last three games against the Nets, going for 35 or more twice. James poses a huge matchup problem for New Jersey since Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson were not at a size disadvantage in the first round against Toronto. They will be here, and it could very well be the difference as James will likely look to take over this series on his own.

With Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw serving suspensions in Game 5, three Phoenix players logged at least 45 minutes in the team's loss to San Antonio: Shawn Marion, Raja Bell and Steve Nash. That marked the first time in five years that a team had three individuals play at least 45 minutes in a non-OT playoff game. Wally Szczerbiak, Kevin Garnett and Chauncey Billups did that for Minnesota in a loss at Dallas on April 24th, 2002. While Stoudemire and Diaw will certainly be rest, their teammates might not have the same energy, especially on the road. BIG EDGE: SPURS
The return of Stoudemire and Diaw can only help the Suns inside, as Kurt Thomas logged a season-high in minutes (36:09) and clearly was winded at the end of the game after totaling 15 points and 12 rebounds. If Stoudemire can stay out of foul trouble and keep his emotions intact, insiders believe there is a very good chance this series will return to Phoenix for Game 7 on Sunday. EDGE: SUNS
San Antonio is 6-2-1 ATS in its last 9 games overall.
UNDER is 11-2 in San Antonio's last 13 games.

SECOND-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

San Antonio leads 3-2 SU & ATS
                UNDER 3-2

                5/16/07 - Game 5: San Anonio 88, PHOENIX 85 (ATS winner: PUSH -3 | UNDER 201.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Spurs were up 11-10 and did not take their next lead until 84-81 with 36 second left on a Bruce Bowen 3-pointer. They then went ahead 88-83 before Phoenix guard Raja Bell made an uncontested layup to cost San Antonio backers a victory and earned a push for Suns bettors. The Spurs had their lowest point total of any quarter of the season in the first to set an UNDER pace, and Phoenix simply could not play much faster without suspended big men Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw.

                5/14/07 - Game 4: Phoenix 104, SAN ANTONIO 98 (ATS winner: Pho +3.5 | UNDER 203)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Spurs missed their last seven shots of the game and saw the Suns use a 12-1 run to steal Game 4 despite an ugly ending. San Antonio's Robert Horry committed a flagrant foul on Phoenix point guard Steve Nash with 18 seconds left to play, shoving him out of bounds after the game clearly was headed the way of the Suns. Suspensions are pending for Horry along with Phoenix big men Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw, who both left the bench following the foul. The Spurs had seemed headed for a victory before the late run by Phoenix, leading by five points at halftime and eight going into the fourth quarter. They just self-destructed at the end.

                5/12/07 - Game 3: SAN ANTONIO 108, Phoenix 81 (ATS winner: SA -4 | OVER 200.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Spurs held a 55-53 edge at halftime and took control in the third quarter, when Manu Ginobili scored half of his 24 points. San Antonio led by eight going into the fourth, and then Tim Duncan made sure his team would maintain a safe lead by scoring 13 of his game-high 33 points in the final quarter. The Spurs proved yet again they are capable of playing at a high pace, beating the Suns at their own game for the second time in three games and forcing another OVER.

                5/8/07 - Game 2: PHOENIX 101, San Antonio 81 (ATS winner: Pho -5 | UNDER 205)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Suns rebounded from a slow start, outscoring the Spurs 30-17 in the second quarter after totaling just 19 in the first to take a 49-42 halftime lead. Phoenix then duplicated its second-quarter magic in the fourth to turn a close game into a rout and showed much-improved defense to push the total way UNDER.

                5/6/07 - Game 1: San Antonio 111, PHOENIX 106 (ATS winner: SA +4.5 | UNDER 199.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: This was a classic playoff battle throughout, leading up to a violent collision between Phoenix point guard Steve Nash and San Antonio's Tony Parker with 2:53 remaining. Nash got the worst of it and had to leave the game in the final minute with a bloody nose that required six stitches at the end of the game. His absence led to two failed offensive possessions, and a return with 9.1 seconds left was too late. The Spurs won despite the pace being far more high-scoring than they like, as they made a couple more big shots and held a 49-35 rebounding edge.

                REMAINING SCHEDULE

5/18/07 - Game 6: Phoenix at SAN ANTONIO (ESPN | 9:30 PM ET)
5/20/07 - Game 7: San Antonio at PHOENIX ( TBD)

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

San Antonio wins 2-1 SU (Phoenix 2-1 ATS)
                UNDER 2-1

                4/5/07 - SAN ANTONIO 92, Phoenix 85 (ATS winner: SA -4 | UNDER 205.5)
                2/1/07 - PHOENIX 103, San Antonio 87 (ATS winner: Pho -6.5 | UNDER 206)
                11/8/06 - SAN ANTONIO 111, Phoenix 106 (ATS winner: Pho +5.5 | OVER 206)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Home court was the deciding factor in all three meetings this season, with the first going OVER in overtime. San Antonio's Tony Parker was the top overall player in the season series, getting the best of Phoenix's Steve Nash by averaging 28 points per game. The Suns obviously love to run, and the Spurs are better at adapting to this style of play with Parker and Manu Ginobili, who scored 32 points off the bench in the second meeting. Phoenix has a much more difficult time when it becomes a more defensive-minded game, proven by the last meeting. Whichever team can dictate the tempo more will likely win this series and become the favorite to represent the Western Conference in the 2007 NBA Finals.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at New Jersey Nets (-3, 181 ½)

Neither team looks like one of the four best teams in the NBA, but one of them will nonetheless be among the league's final four teams once this series wraps up.

Anyone claiming they can legitimately predict what is going to happen next in this series is a stone-cold liar. It’s not that things have been so wild and crazy that nobody knows who's going to step up next. In fact, it’s been the exact opposite.

The lethargy displayed in Wednesday night’s 83-72 New Jersey win simply added to a series that has featured five of the most boring NBA games in recent memory. Predicting the winner is more about which team dogs it less, rather than which team outplays the other.

Tough not to take the points in a situation like this, especially since Nets fans have decided to mimic their team's disinterest. NBA.com reports there are still tickets available for Game 6.

                  Pick: Cavaliers +3

                  -------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs (-3, 201)

"The Decision" has overshadowed everything else in this series and will undoubtedly be the defining moment of the 2007 playoffs should the Suns lose.

It’s difficult not to argue that the Suns would have won on Wednesday night had Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw been playing, rather than serving one-game suspensions. Phoenix controlled the game for all but the final three minutes, losing 88-85 as a 3-point underdog.

The effect of the situation is two-fold. First, the Suns had to shorten their bench to six men. Steve Nash, Shawn Marion and Raja Bell all played playoff highs in minutes as a result. They were clearly tiring at the end of Game 5, and tired is the last thing you want to be against a physical Spurs team heading into Game 6.

The letdown factor has to come into play in this one – the Suns could have delivered a decisive blow at home and taken control of the series. Instead, they have to be feeling sorry for themselves heading on the road in a must-win situation.

                  Pick: Spurs -3

                              Kansas City at Colorado
A matchup of two last-place teams, the Royals aren't exactly playing like one right now. Kansas City is coming off a series in which it took three of four in Oakland and has won four of its last five. Tonight's starter, Jorge De La Rosa, has been one of Buddy Bell's most consistent hurlers and comes in with a 3-2 record and 3.35 ERA over his last five starts. Colorado's only consistency lately has been on the losing end as the Rockies have dropped seven of their last 11. Surprisingly it has been the offense that has let Colorado down as the Rockies have managed only a .219 average over that stretch and have scored more than three runs only three times. That won't help Colorado starter Jeff Francis, who has allowed an average of more than six earned runs (6.28) in his five home starts this season (1-3 record). The Royals look like a good underdog pick (+170) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Kansas City favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Kansas City (+170). Here are all of today's games.
