  • Farnsworth Criticizes Clemens!!

    Kyle Farnsworth went on a Chicago radio station this morning and criticized Roger Clemens for his “family plan” agreement with the Yankees.

    “It might cause some friction … Granted this is going to be his 23rd or 24th year and he can get the opportunity to do that, but still, I think if you’re going to be part of the team you should be there always,” Farnsworth told The Score.

    “You win as a team, you lose as a team…I respect what he’s done and I respect him as a person and a player but to be a part of the team you have to be there with the team.”

    Farnsworth didn’t back off his words when we spoke to him, pointing out that he played with Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux and they never had those perks.

    I suspect Farnsworth is saying what others players are thinking. It’s a bit strange that an reliever with a 4.41 ERA would take on Clemens, however.

    Joe Torre snapped, “next question” when asked about Farnsworth. But he then repeated that he would deal with any objection to Clemens only if the issue came up.

    I have been told that the “family plan” agreement with Clemens is a handshake deal and not part of his contract. Based on what Torre has been saying, it seems likely that Clemens will be around the team far more than he was with Houston in recent seasons.

    It really comes down to this: If Clemens wins games and pitches well, nobody will care. If he doesn’t and is away often, it will become an issue.

    It looks like Farnsworth is asking for a trade...if so...Good riddens my friend!!

      Ever wonder what Clemens' hat size is now??? He is a hell of a lot bigger than he was in 84'...just wondering.
      $100/unit

      They are all booger eaters!!!

        I agree with him. No player is bigger than the game. He shouldn't be allowed to only show up when he pitches.
        MLB (2014): (3-4) -.9 units

                  Clemens does what he does so he can be in better shape for a team. If he goes on all those road trips plus starts the season in April his legs will tire on him towards the end of the season. So what good would that do a team in contention? none. It's smart on his part both profesionally and personally. You will see more of this as the years go by as MLB will realize that they need to do more of this.

                    It doesn't promote a healthy team atmosphere. What does going on the road trips hurt exactly? He's not doing anything on them anyway except flying on a plane and sitting in the dugout.

                      Flying is wear and tear

                      Clemens = HOF
                      Farnsworth = Nothing

                        Clemens is acting like he is above the game and that is my only issue with it. I'm not saying he's not a HOF pitcher. His head is getting too big and he needs to come back down to earth a bit. I hope he gets his tits lit up this year and then it will make it a big issue when he's not showing up.

                          You get on a plane, knowing clemens he's probably got a decked out leather reclinere, put on your ipod and snooze or get a magazine/book and read, play cards, whatever. Flying is not wear and tear.

                            I understand both sides of the story, but I lean towards the side of sitting with the team. Clemens is one of the best pitchers in baseball, period. However, why is he bigger than the game? Baseball is a game of repitition, travel, and friendships fostered through time. History shows that teams that gel together play better than mere talent alone (not always the case, but more the norm than not). The Yankees are always an anomoly, but I think the experiment of high dollar players has not worked because these are all individual members that are reluctant to play together. Look at the Arod-Jeter crisis over the past year (I still don't believe the hatchet is buried there). I mean, the Yankees are a dugout full of divas that don't put it all together. And you know what happens when divas get behind and their panties all ruffled...

                            Now, I will say that enjoy Roger pitching and tried to catch him every time when I lived in Houston; however, you could sense that he was not the ultimate for the team. Letting Roger do this opens the door for others. Who is not to say that Schilling, Maddox, Glavine, Smoltz, Johnson, etc deserve the same treatment in the future. I realize they might not be on the same level, but this opens pandora's box on such treatment. Hell, I guess people pitching in to the 50s might be the norm shortly, but at what expense.

                            Maybe the cottage industry to be in here is diva treatment as this is where it is going. You could arrange limo, penthouse, airline, etc all for one player. You could bring that one individual to the stadium right before the team goes out for starting lineup presentations and then whip him out before the media comes in the clubhouse. Why stop there, why not let everyone hang out at home and chill and arrive at the stadium only when they play. To me, that does not sound very appealing, comforting or good for the team, but that is my just my thought.

                            Baseball, more than any other sport, is an absolute marathon and not a sprint. I believe the whole is greater than the individual member. You can have a pitcher pitch a perfect game, but he will need a good defense and catcher calling the right pitches.

                            In closing this long post, I say enjoy Roger pitching, but don't think he is the second coming of Christ unlike what Suzy believes. My 2 cents, he will start decent then fizzle, being 44 will catch up. Baseball has longevity in terms of length of playing time, but it is a younger mans game. Roger has talent, skill and intelligence, but the younger players will have a quicker bat, fire and desire. Pitching in the AL East will be brutal as it is not NL Central. If Roger proves me wrong, I will not be surprised as that guy has fire coursing through him. Either way, I, along with the rest, will be watching this exercise in futulity shortly be released...
