    Detroit at Anaheim
The Red Wings have the Ducks on their heels a bit after beating up on Anaheim (5-0) in Game Three to take a 2-1 series lead. Adding to the Ducks' turmoil is the one-game suspension of Chris Pronger, who was disciplined for a blow to the head on Tomas Holmstrom. Pronger leads Anaheim with 12 points in the postseason, including three goals, and his leadership on the ice will be missed tonight. Detroit is getting plenty of leadership from veteran goalie Dominik Hasek, who logged his second playoff shutout this year and 14th of his career with a 29-save performance. The Red Wings look like a good underdog pick in this one according to Dunkel, which has Detroit favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Detroit (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

      Minnesota at Cleveland
The usually reliable Johan Santana has struggled lately to pick up wins as the Twins are just 1-3 in his last four starts, while as a team Minnesota has dropped six of its last seven. Meanwhile, Cleveland's Fausto Carmona has found a nice role in the Indians' starting rotation and has gone 4-0 in his last five starts with a solid 2.00 ERA. With the Tribe continuing to play winning baseball at home (13-3 record after last night's victory), they look like a good underdog pick (+125) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Cleveland favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

Chicago Cubs at New York Mets: (-121, 9 ½)

The Mets and Cubbies will be a little sleepy-eyed taking the field this afternoon, especially left-hander Jason Vargas who got the last minute callup after Wednesday’s three-hour rain delay. Today’s 1:10 p.m. ET start time gives both teams only 12 hours of rest after wrapping up Wednesday’s game just before 1 a.m.

Vargas hasn’t pitched for the Mets this season since coming to the club in an offseason deal with the Florida Marlins. He was 2-3 with a 5.30 ERA in Triple-A New Orleans but has gone 0-3 in his last four starts in the minors, during which he has an ERA over 9.00.

"He's been pitching so-so down there, but if he gets a shot, and it's a good possibility he might be the guy (today), hopefully he'll come up here and give us a good outing," Mets manager Willie Randolph told the New York Daily News.

Last season in Florida, Vargas was 6-7 with a 5.25 ERA.

          Pick: Cubs +113

Florida Marlins at Pittsburgh Pirates: (+101, 9)

You’ve heard of singing for you supper. How about pitching for you position?

Bucs starter Tony Armas’ future with the organization hangs in the balance tonight when the right-hander takes the bump against the Marlins. Armas is winless in six starts this season and has an ERA just under 9.00.

"He's aware of what he's done," manager Jim Tracy told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "(Armas must) be competitive and get our club to the back end of the bullpen and give our club a chance to win."

The last team Armas wants to see is Florida, which has punished him throughout his career. He is 3-12 in 17 appearances versus the Fish with a 5.98 ERA. Last season, Armas went 0-3 against the Marlins and was tagged with a 9.60 ERA after allowing 16 earned runs on 29 hits in only 15 innings of work.

          Pick: Marlins -109

Los Angeles Angels at Seattle Mariners (-123, 7 ½)

Los Angeles is nice, but the city of Seattle is quickly becoming Bartolo Colon’s favorite vacation spot. The music is good, the coffee is hot and the batters are downright friendly.

How else can you explain the right-hander’s career dominance over the Mariners? Colon is 10-8 in 22 career starts against Seattle but saves his best for Safeco Field, where he is 7-1 with a 1.98 ERA.

Colon is 4-0 this season with a 3.66 ERA and, according to Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia, is finding his 2005 CY Young form after missing the majority of last season with injury. This year he’s battled with a triceps injury but looks to be over it heading into tonight’s game.

          Pick: Angels +115

            Streaking Pitchers

            Thursday, May 17

            Hot Pitchers

Fausto Carmona (Cleveland Indians) - Carmona has been unbeatable for close to a month for the Cleveland Indians. The hot streak began when he outdueled Johan Santana and the Minnesota Twins on April 24. The right-hander will try to do it again today to help the Indians complete a three-game sweep of the Twins. Carmona is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his last four starts and has only lost once this season season. Cleveland backers have found great value in the converted reliever and hope the winning trend continues at Jacobs Field this afternoon. Carmona is 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA in six appearances against the Twins.

Bartolo Colon (Los Angeles Angels) - Colon is one of the main reasons the Angels pitching staff is ranked sixth in the majors. The right-hander is undefeated in five starts and has an impressive 4-0 record to go with a 3.66 ERA. Colon has bounced back after starting the season on the DL and his recent success against the Mariners should work in his favor today. Colon is 4-0 in his last five starts versus the M's and is a dominant 7-1 at Safeco Field in his career.

Roy Oswalt (Houston Astros) - The Houston Astros are on a bit of a roll right now and Roy Oswalt has a lot to do with that. The right-hander guns for his fourth straight win tonight while trying to help the Astros win their fifth straight. The month of May has been a profitable one for Oswalt as he has gone 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA to run his season record to 6-2. The bad news for Houston backers is that the Giants are one of three teams against which Oswalt has a losing record in his career. The Astros ace is only 2-4 with a 4.53 ERA in eight starts against San Fran.

Ben Sheets (Milwaukee Brewers) - It does not take long for the tables to turn on a hot team. Last week the Brewers were the hottest team in baseball and now they have the longest active losing streak. Seems like the perfect time to look to the ace of the staff to right the ship. Ben Sheets will try to do that today against the Philadelphia Phillies. The right-hander has been strong in his last four outings going 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA since April 20. Sheets is 1-3 with 4.98 ERA in six career starts against Philadelphia.

            Cold Pitchers

Josh Fogg (Colorado Rockies) - You could say that Colorado's starter has a fitting name. Josh Fogg certainly has been stuck in a fog so far this season and the Rockies are hopeful he can improve on his 1-4 record this afternoon. The right-hander has not won a game since April 25 and his spot in the starting rotation could be in jeopardy if he does not improve. On the positive side, Fogg did make it to the sixth inning without allowing a hit in his last start before losing 8-3 to San Fran. Add that to his career 5-0 record against the Diamondbacks and you've got a sign for optimism at Coors Field.

Kameron Loe (Texas Rangers) - Things have not been going well for the Texas Rangers lately. Their starting rotation currently has the worst ERA in baseball at 6.22 and tonight, one of the main culprits is taking the mound. Kameron Loe is 0-3 with a 7.43 ERA in his last four starts and the way the D-Rays are swinging the bats in this series it could get ugly. The right-hander is 1-0 with a 5.17 ERA in seven career games, including two starts, versus the Devil Rays. He made two relief appearances against them this this season, allowing two runs and five hits over four innings.

              First Six Weeks

The major league baseball season is now over six weeks old and a number of early season facts have been established with longer term results to be proven out over time. Milwaukee is receiving national attention is a positive way for the first time in years, as young players like Prince Fielder and J.J. Hardy are receiving acclaim for the Brew Crew’s fast start. Atlanta quick start has them competing with New York at the moment in the National League East; however that could change quickly depending on the severity of John Smoltz injured right hand. The New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers are right on schedule in respective division.

In the American League, Boston has shot out of the gate with strong starting pitching, a solid bullpen and an offense that is just hitting its stride as the weather is warming up. Detroit and Cleveland are presently leading the way in what promises to be a 26-week dogfight in the AL Central.

Disappointments have to include World Series champion St. Louis, who is not fielding same team and got hot in the postseason after winning only 83 regular season games in 2006. Texas thought they might have turned a corner hiring Ron Washington as manager, instead not only has the pitching been bad, so has the hitting. Kansas City and Washington have hunkered down ever so comfortably into last place in there own divisions. Here are some of the top trends to follow in the coming weeks.

              • Boston is 14-6 in away games for +9.1 units and 22-7 as favorite. The Red Sox are pounding the American League with 20-8 record for +11.2 units in games decided by two or more runs.

              • Milwaukee is 16-5 at Miller Park and cleaning up the Central Division with 17-8 mark.

              • The New York Mets are nocturnal so far in 2007 with 18-6 record in night games good for +10.5 units.

              • Atlanta is 15-6, +6.2 units vs. right hand starters this season.

              • Cleveland is 18-5, +11.7 units as a favorite and 3-9 -4.5 units as an underdog.

              • San Diego is 10-4 in all contests decided by four or more runs.

              • Seattle’s bullpen is 5-1 and 81.8 percent on saves opportunites, yet has been bailed out by offense leading to be 16-0 record when leading after six innings.

              • Kansas City newly acquired starter Gil Meche has had a hand in 46.1 percent of all Royals victories. (Royals 6-2 in his starts)

              • Washington figured to be bad and they are right on schedule with 7-21 record in games decided by two or more runs.

              • Cincinnati is 7-19, -13.2 units in games played under the lights.

              • Tampa Bay is last in runs allowed at six a game, making for convenient explanation for 0-10 mark in games decided by four or more runs.

              • Cubs bullpen is pathetic with 2-10 record and seven blown saves in 15 attempts before May is half over.

              • Yankees are 0-5 as underdog thus far and 3-11 playing in own division for -15 units.

              • Oakland is 4-10-3 Under at home in 2007.

              • Toronto is the best road Over team in baseball at 12-4-1 and the Red Sox are the best Under road club at 15-4-1.

Is it a coincidence that …………..

              • Boston leads the major leagues in walks looking at their record?

              • Cleveland and Milwaukee are off to strong starts and there pitchers have allowed the fewest walks in baseball?

              • Toronto has spent most of the time at or near AL East basement giving up the most long balls among the 30 teams?

              • The last five teams in fielding percentage are Tampa Bay, Washington, Texas, Cincinnati and Kansas City, who are in last place in their divisions?

Detroit Red Wings at Anaheim Ducks (9 PM ET)
Anaheim defensemen Chris Pronger was suspended for one game on Wednesday and will undoubtedly be missed, as he leads the Ducks with 12 points this postseason - including three goals. EDGE: RED WINGS
Detroit goaltender Dominik Hasek expects the Ducks to play much better in Game 4 after an embarassing 5-0 loss on Tuesday. "I definitely expect them to be better-prepared," Hasek said. "They made a lot of mistakes, drew a lot of penalties and I'm sure they'll be determined not to do that again." EDGE: DUCKS
The favorite is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
The UNDER is 13-3-3 in the last 19 meetings in Anaheim.
