    Streaking Pitchers

    Wednesday, May 16

    Hot

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - Trends courtesy of BettorsChat.com. Contreras is starting to look like the pitcher who was the best in baseball for the first half of last season. The Cuban has a 1.69 ERA over his last three starts for the White Sox, +123 home underdogs for Game 2 of a doubleheader with the New York Yankees tonight. Contreras has allowed only one round-tripper over the span to go with a stellar .298 OBP against. The right-hander has been lights-out at night for ChiSox backers this season, sporting a 2.45 ERA under the lights.

Jorge Sosa (New York Mets) - Sosa has been a surprise in what has been a surprisingly solid Mets rotation. The hard-throwing righty is 2-0 on the season since coming off the disabled list with a 2.77 ERA. In helping Mets bettors collect two straight paydays, Sosa has put up an excellent 1.00 WHIP and .255 OBP against. Oddsmakers have the Mets as -120 favorites at Shea Stadium tonight against the Chicago Cubs.

    Cold

Kip Wells (St. Louis Cardinals) - Trends courtesy of BettorsChat.com. Things have been going horribly for the defending World Series champions. Wells is a big reason why. The former Pirate is 1-7 so far this season with a 6.51 ERA. Problem is, that's not even the worst of it. Wells is 0-3 since April 25 with an ERA of almost 10.00. His inability to keep runners off base is burning the money of Cards bettors right now, as Wells has walked 10 batters in his last 16 innings of work. Books have St. Louis as +140 road underdogs tonight against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Casey Fossum (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - With the Devil Rays hosting a series against the Texas Rangers at Disney World this week, you've got to wonder if D-Rays backers are wishing upon a star for a decent start tonight. Don't bet on it. Fossum has an unsightly 8.10 ERA in his last three trips to the hill for the Devil Rays, +105 underdogs tonight. The lefty has also struggled on grass this season, with a 0-2 record and 11.81 ERA.

      Hot Lines

      Wednesday, May 16

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox (-130, 10 ½)

The Boston Red Sox biggest issue right now is the injury bug. Reliever Mike Timlin is on the disabled list, starter Josh Beckett may miss his next start because of a skin irritation, and now J.D. Drew will probably miss sometime after injuring his back in last night’s game.

Trends courtesy of BettorsChat.com. Drew crashed into the right field wall while attempting to make a play on a deep fly. He tried to play through the pain but was removed in the seventh inning.

“I think he actually hit his elbow, too,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona told the Boston Herald. “His lower back just got tight and tighter as the game progressed. We’d much rather be safe than sorry.”

Drew would probably sit tonight anyway with lefty Mike Maroth going for the Tigers. Francona normally likes to get Wily Mo Pena as many at-bats as he can against southpaws.

      Pick: Red Sox –130

Chicago Cubs at New York Mets (-123, 8 ½)

Don’t read too much into the Cubs offensive explosion last night against the Mets. Chicago is still missing a couple of key regulars.

Trends courtesy of BettorsChat.com. First baseman Derrek Lee has sat out the last two games because of neck spasms and probably won’t return to the lineup until Friday. Second baseman Mark DeRosa strained a ligament in his right ring finger on Monday and didn't play yesterday. He might play today but will more than likely make his return tomorrow.

Chicago starter Rich Hill has slowed a bit since starting the season on a tear. He was touched for two dingers and five earned runs in his last start, a 7-2 loss at Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Jorge Sosa has won both his two starts since being called up.

      Pick: Mets –123

Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies (-131, 9)

The Brewers have lost three of their last four, including a heartbreaker in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Milwaukee needs better production out of leadoff hitter Rickie Weeks. The second baseman was 0-for-4 last night and narrowly missed a golden sombrero and he’s hitting only .237 so far this season. His on-base percentage is extremely important to Milwaukee’s offensive output because of sluggers J.J. Hardy and Prince Fielder hitting behind him.

Trends courtesy of BettorsChat.com. Philadelphia has won five of its last six games and scored 40 runs during that stretch.

      Pick: Phillies –131

          San Antonio at Phoenix
The Suns certainly got the worst of the suspensions handed down from Robert Horry's hit on Steve Nash at the end of Game Four. While the Spurs lose only Horry, Phoenix must play tonight without Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw, who were caught leaving the bench. As a result, Vegas has dinged the Suns big time, dropping them from a 3-1/2 point favorite to a 3-point underdog. The loss of Stoudemire is significant as he was averaging 23.5 points and 10.3 rebounds in the series. While Diaw's numbers aren't comparable, he is a serviceable backup who will be missed. But what is overlooked is the fact that Phoenix still has plenty of talent on the floor with Nash, Bell, Marion and Barbosa. And Kurt Thomas, while no Stoudemire, has played well in the series (9.5 points, 5.8 rebounds). Phoenix is also coming off one of the biggest wins in franchise history in Game Four and should have a very voluble crowd behind it. Even short-handed, the Suns look like a good underdog pick (+3) according to Dunkel, which has Phoenix favored by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Phoenix (+3). Here are all of today's games.

            Buffalo at Ottawa

Buffalo has looked nothing like the team that led the league in wins (53) and goals (308) during the regular season. The Sabres are 0-for-18 on the power play in the series and managed just 15 shots in Game Three as they were shut out for the first time since Game Four of the Eastern Conference Finals last year. The Senators can taste their first Stanley Cup appearance in team history and look like a solid pick to close this one out at home tonight according to Dunkel, which has Ottawa favored by 2. Buffalo Sabres at Ottawa Senators (7 PM ET)
The Sabres' power play has been silenced, going 0-for-18 in the series, and they managed just 15 shots overall on Monday. EDGE: SENATORS
Ottawa has never been up 3-0 in its previous 16 playoff series and is fully aware that it won't be easy to beat a Buffalo team that has nothing to lose at this point. EDGE: SABRES
With an NHL-best 11-2 record this postseason, Ottawa has an opportunity to become only the sixth team and first since Anaheim in 2003 - to reach the finals in 14 games since the NHL expanded its playoff format in 1987. EDGE: SENATORS
The Sabres are 0-5 in their last five playoff games as an underdog.
