    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Randy Johnson allowed one bunt single in six innings at Coors Field Tuesday, with no walks, nine strikeouts.

-- Hunter Pence's first major league home run tied game 5-5 in 8th, then Carlos Lee won it for Astros with a 10th inning tater, as Houston gets back to .500 for first time in while.

-- Just when the Nationals win four games in row, their two top starters are on the DL, so they're back to square one.

-- Phillies are only 5.5 games out of Wild Card with Howard on DL after a .204 start. If they can stay close, would expect a big second half from Charlie Manuel's crew.

-- Felix Hernandex got back on the field for Seattle, and M's gave him lot of support, lighting up Escobar for eight runs in 2.1 IP, as Mariners hammered the first place Angels, but Felix lasted just 3.2 innings, throwing 78 pitches.

-- JJ Hardy is tied for second in majors with 37 RBI. Wow.

Wednesday's list of 13: Spurs benefit from cheap shot.......

      13) Let me get this straight; a sub on the Spurs takes a cheap shot at Suns' best player, right near the Phoenix bench, and when Phoenix players react to the cheap shot, without doing anything physical, they get suspended? This is stupid.

      12) Stoudemire and Diaw reacted, just like Duncan reacted in the second quarter, when he left his bench, so why isn't he getting suspended? What jackass is making these decisions?

      11) Stu Jackson is making the decisions, with the blessing of David Stern. It totally lacks common sense, but the sad part of all this is that an underlying subplot here is that if league had done the right thing and not suspended Stoudemire, one of the Suns' two best players, Knick fans, once they realized the playoffs were still going on, would have been outraged, and the league cares way too much about New York.

      10) Remember back when Knicks left the bench, crossing the court to get involved in a melee with Miami, and it wound up contributing to their demise? So now New York media types were making noise that the Suns had to suffer in same way.

This is a multi-million dollar business, and the people who run it don't have the onions to make tough, but fair calls. Sad

      9) Another story about to take off is this Michael Vick thing; if the NFL finds out he was involved in dog fighting, he has to be suspended, which makes Atlanta look stupid for getting rid of backup Matt Schaub. This could get ugly.

      8) Maybe the A's should fire their trainer; Huston Street is on the DL (elbow) and Justin Duchscherer, his replacement, has an arthritic hip and may join him there. As soon as they get Johnson and Bradley back, the relief pitchers get hurt. Their top starter Harden is constantly hurt. Is there an issue, or are baseball players in general just too fragile?

      7) Reds led Padres 1-0 in bottom of 8th; with two out and men on second and third for San Diego, Cincinnati starter Harang stumbled while pitching, balking tying run in, as season from hell continues for slumping Reds, who were bailed out in 12th inning by a Griffey homer, 2-1. Padres had only two hits.

      6) Red Sox scored 42 runs in Matsuzaka's last five starts; they scored five runs in his first three outings.

      5) Rangers, Devil Rays played scoreless first inning Tuesday; they are two worst first inning teams in majors, with Rangers outscored by 23 runs in first frame, Devil Rays by thirty runs.

      4) Hideous strategy by Texas manager Washington Tuesday, as Rangers lost to Rays in extra frames; Tampa Bay has first and third, no one out, winning run on third, Navarro up, .202 hitter, slow runner. They walk him to pitch to Harris, who is a .330+ hitter, and already has three hits in the game. Ballgame.

      3) Devil Rays are now 15-8 in games decided by either one or two runs; unfortunately, they're 1-14 in the other games.

      2) Quote of the day comes from Albert Einstein..........
"Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds."

      1) If one of the Nets' subs could cheap shot Lebron James in the next game, maybe New Jersey could still win the series.

Cavaliers held Carter to 6-23 from floor in Game 4, can wrap this up with win on home floor, where they won first two series tilts, 81-77/102-92. Cavs have shot over 42% in this series only once in four games; Lebron carried them last game with 30 points. It would be huge for Cleveland to win here, then sit back and wait for winner of Chicago-Detroit series. Mikki Moore had 25 in last game for Nets, but they need more from Carter.

Suns are without Stoudemire, Diaw for this game, as somehow, San Antonio benefits from Horry's cheap shot at end of Game 4 Phoenix rallied from double digit deficit to win at Alamo to even series; think back to last year, when they played whole season without Amare; they'll take more 3's, try to run more, while San Antonio will try to pound ball inside against Thomas and other Sun big men, whomever they might be.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#6 New Jersey Nets at #2 Cleveland Cavaliers
                Game 5 - Wednesday, May 16th, 8 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

The Cavs took over on the boards again in Game 4 after getting outrebounded for the first time in the series in Game 3. Cleveland now owns an overall advantage of 173-153 on the glass and did a much better job at home in the first two games (100-69). Look for the Cavs to play with a lot of desire here in an effort to close out the Nets. BIG EDGE: CAVS
Despite averaging nearly 24 points per game, New Jersey's Vince Carter is playing himself out of millions of dollars with his brutal performance in this series. Carter will be a free agent after the season ends and has lowered his value after playing well at times in the first round against Toronto. He is shooting just 34 percent (31-of-91) from the field and has not shot better than 42 percent in any of the games. In fact, his ball-handling blunder at the end of Game 4 cost the Nets a shot at even tying the game. EDGE: CAVS
The Nets shot just 36 percent from the field in Game 4 at home, making insiders wonder how bad they will shoot the ball with their season hanging in the balance on the road. The big three of Carter, Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson made only 11-of-48 shots (23 percent) and wasted the best offensive effort of Mikki Moore's career (25 points on 11-of-14 shooting). Then again, New Jersey turned in the best shooting performance of the series between both teams in Game 2 (52 percent) and still lost by 10 at Cleveland. EDGE: CAVS
New Jersey is 10-4 ATS in its last 14 games overall.
New Jersey is 14-4 ATS in the last 18 meetings overall.
Cleveland is 31-14-1 ATS in its last 46 games overall.
OVER is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings at Cleveland.

                Head-to-Head Recaps

SECOND-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

Cleveland leads 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS)
                UNDER 3-1

                5/14/07 - Game 4: Cleveland 87, NEW JERSEY 85 (ATS winner: Cleve +3.5 | UNDER 184.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Neither team seemed to want to win this game down the stretch, as both Cleveland's LeBron James and New Jersey's Vince Carter missed critical free throws in the final minutes. Carter then botched a shot for the Nets to tie the game, letting the ball squirt loose and go out of bounds on their final possession when he was double teamed. The trio of Carter, Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson combined to shoot just 23 percent from the field (11-of-48), contributing to an easy UNDER play.

                5/12/07 - Game 3: NEW JERSEY 96, Cleveland 85 (ATS winner: NJ -4.5 | UNDER 186)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: New Jersey got off to a fast start, taking a 12-point lead in the second quarter before Cleveland scored 15 straight to go up, 40-37. The Nets rallied back to take a 45-43 halftime lead and then again extended it to 15 before the Cavs made one last charge early in the fourth, cutting it to four. New Jersey had another answer for Cleveland though and pushed the lead back to double digits to get the win and cover.

                5/8/07 - Game 2: CLEVELAND 102, New Jersey 92 (ATS winner: Cleve -4.5 | OVER 180.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Similar to their first-round series with the Wizards, the Cavs turned it on in the fourth quarter, outscoring New Jersey 28-19 to earn the victory and a cover for their backers. Cleveland's LeBron James scored 25 of his 36 points after halftime and totaled 12 assists to help put the Nets away and push the pace for an easy OVER.

                5/6/07 - Game 1: CLEVELAND 81, New Jersey 77 (ATS winner: NJ +6 | UNDER 184.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Both teams struggled offensively in the lowest-scoring game of the playoffs so far, cashing an easy UNDER. The Nets managed to stay close despite shooting just 37 percent from the field, pulling within 79-77 with 19.5 seconds left on two free throws by Vince Carter. LeBron James answered for Cleveland with the final basket of the game on a driving lineup, and the Cavs held on the win but not the cover.

                REMAINING SCHEDULE

                5/16/07 - Game 5 - New Jersey at CLEVELAND (TNT | TBD)

                OVER 2-1

                1/6/06 - CLEVELAND 96, New Jersey 91 (ATS winner: NJ +6.5 | OVER 186.5)
                12/20/06 - NEW JERSEY 113, Cleveland 111 (ATS winner: NJ -1 | OVER 186)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The Cavs have turned things around against the Nets over the last two years, winning four of the last five meetings, including two of three this season. New Jersey had won the previous five meetings and is still 12-2 ATS in the last 14 games between the teams, including 7-1 in Cleveland. All eyes will be on Cavs star LeBron James, who averaged 30.3 points in the last three games against the Nets, going for 35 or more twice. James poses a huge matchup problem for New Jersey since Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson were not at a size disadvantage in the first round against Toronto. They will be here, and it could very well be the difference as James will likely look to take over this series on his own. Trends courtesy of BettorsChat.com

#3 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Phoenix Suns
                Game 5 - Wednesday, May 15th, 10:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

Phoenix will be at a serious disadvantage inside without Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw, who were both suspended for this game after leaving the bench at the end of Game 4 when Steve Nash was knocked out of bounds by San Antonio's Robert Horry. The suspensions leave the Suns without a big man who can score and a help defender to aid Kurt Thomas in checking Tim Duncan. This also hurts the depth of Phoenix, which will likely be forced to go with a much smaller lineup when Thomas is not on the floor. BIG EDGE: SPURS
Ironically, the Suns have won both games of this series that have gone UNDER the total, using outstanding defense in the fourth quarter to close out the Spurs. Phoenix allowed just 17 points to San Antonio in the fourth quarter of Game 2 and 18 in Game 4. Meanwhile, the Suns have surrendered an average of 31 points in the fourth of their two losses in the series EDGE: SUNS
The home crowd may be the biggest factor in Game 5 following San Antonio forward Horry's flagrant foul on Nash. The Phoenix faithful showed an enormous amount of energy in Game 2 after Nash was injured in the latter stages of Game 1 and could be even louder after the two-time NBA MVP was violently taken out of bounds with 18 seconds left in Game 4. BIG EDGE: SUNS
San Antonio is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
San Antonio is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings at Phoenix.
Phoenix is 13-6 ATS in its last 19 games vs. Southwest Division opponents.
UNDER is 10-2 in San Antonio's last 12 games.

                5/14/07 - Game 4: Phoenix 104, SAN ANTONIO 98 (ATS winner: Pho +3.5 | UNDER 203)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Spurs missed their last seven shots of the game and saw the Suns use a 12-1 run to steal Game 4 despite an ugly ending. San Antonio's Robert Horry committed a flagrant foul on Phoenix point guard Steve Nash with 18 seconds left to play, shoving him out of bounds after the game clearly was headed the way of the Suns. Suspensions are pending for Horry along with Phoenix big men Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw, who both left the bench following the foul. The Spurs had seemed headed for a victory before the late run by Phoenix, leading by five points at halftime and eight going into the fourth quarter. They just self-destructed at the end.

                5/12/07 - Game 3: SAN ANTONIO 108, Phoenix 81 (ATS winner: SA -4 | OVER 200.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Spurs held a 55-53 edge at halftime and took control in the third quarter, when Manu Ginobili scored half of his 24 points. San Antonio led by eight going into the fourth, and then Tim Duncan made sure his team would maintain a safe lead by scoring 13 of his game-high 33 points in the final quarter. The Spurs proved yet again they are capable of playing at a high pace, beating the Suns at their own game for the second time in three games and forcing another OVER.

                5/8/07 - Game 2: PHOENIX 101, San Antonio 81 (ATS winner: Pho -5 | UNDER 205)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Suns rebounded from a slow start, outscoring the Spurs 30-17 in the second quarter after totaling just 19 in the first to take a 49-42 halftime lead. Phoenix then duplicated its second-quarter magic in the fourth to turn a close game into a rout and showed much-improved defense to push the total way UNDER.

                5/6/07 - Game 1: San Antonio 111, PHOENIX 106 (ATS winner: SA +4.5 | UNDER 199.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: This was a classic playoff battle throughout, leading up to a violent collision between Phoenix point guard Steve Nash and San Antonio's Tony Parker with 2:53 remaining. Nash got the worst of it and had to leave the game in the final minute with a bloody nose that required six stitches at the end of the game. His absence led to two failed offensive possessions, and a return with 9.1 seconds left was too late. The Spurs won despite the pace being far more high-scoring than they like, as they made a couple more big shots and held a 49-35 rebounding edge.

                REMAINING SCHEDULE

5/14/07 - Game 4: Phoenix at SAN ANTONIO (TNT | 9:30 PM ET)
5/16/07 - Game 5: San Antonio at PHOENIX (TNT | TBD)
5/18/07 - Game 6: Phoenix at SAN ANTONIO (ESPN | TBD)
5/20/07 - Game 7: San Antonio at PHOENIX ( TBD)

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

San Antonio wins 2-1 SU (Phoenix 2-1 ATS)
                UNDER 2-1

                4/5/07 - SAN ANTONIO 92, Phoenix 85 (ATS winner: SA -4 | UNDER 205.5)
                2/1/07 - PHOENIX 103, San Antonio 87 (ATS winner: Pho -6.5 | UNDER 206)
                11/8/06 - SAN ANTONIO 111, Phoenix 106 (ATS winner: Pho +5.5 | OVER 206)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Home court was the deciding factor in all three meetings this season, with the first going OVER in overtime. San Antonio's Tony Parker was the top overall player in the season series, getting the best of Phoenix's Steve Nash by averaging 28 points per game. The Suns obviously love to run, and the Spurs are better at adapting to this style of play with Parker and Manu Ginobili, who scored 32 points off the bench in the second meeting. Phoenix has a much more difficult time when it becomes a more defensive-minded game, proven by the last meeting. Whichever team can dictate the tempo more will likely win this series and become the favorite to represent the Western Conference in the 2007 NBA Finals.

                  New Jersey Nets at Cleveland Cavaliers (- 5 ½, 182 ½)

Vince Carter may have booted this series away from the Nets with a botched play in the closing seconds of Game 4. Carter accidentally kicked the ball out of bounds with his team trailing by two points. The Nets went on to lose the game 87-85.

“We can’t worry about being down 3-1,” point guard Jason Kidd told the Newark Star-Ledger. “We understand our backs are against the wall now, and for us, it’s do or die. We have nothing to hold back. We have to come out and find a way to win on the road.”

Bettors should worry about whether New Jersey’s big three can recover from a horrible shooting performance. Kidd, Carter and Richard Jefferson shot a collective 11-for-48 from the field in their last match. Trends courtesy of BettorsChat.com Unless the Nets rediscover their shooting touch the Cavaliers will be advancing to the Eastern Conference finals.

                  Pick: Cavs -5 ½

San Antonio Spurs at Phoenix Suns (-1 ½, 202)

The Spurs' Monday game was in the bank until their offense decided to pack up shop. The Suns closed the game out with a 12-1 run to secure a 104-98 win and a tied series that is heading back to Phoenix.

“We just kept playing hard,” Suns guard Raja Bell told the East Valley Tribune. “We knew it was going to be a fight. They are a good team. You’re not going to lead the whole game against a team like the Spurs at home. We just continued to chip away.”

The Suns finally showed some double-teams on Tim Duncan. The Spurs big man was averaging 31.6 points through the first three games of the series but managed only 21 points in Game 4. Phoenix coach Mike D’Antoni insisted during Monday’s shootaround that he would not double Duncan.

“They beat us 4-1 (in the 2005 playoffs) with Amare (Stoudemire) getting 37 a game, and that’s kind of what we want to do.”

Luckily for the sake of Phoenix backers, D’Antoni came to his senses and mixed in a few double-teams to shake up Duncan's offensive rhythm.

                  Pick: Suns – 1 ½

Buffalo Sabres at Ottawa Senators (-168, 5 ½)

The 1-0 score in Monday’s game did not fairly represent the Senators' dominance. The Sens outshot Buffalo 32-15. Some key saves by Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller was all that prevented the game from becoming a blowout.

“The biggest thing is you feel bad for this guy,” Sabres co-captain Chris Drury said of his goalie. “Tonight could’ve been ugly without how good he was. And we couldn’t even muster one to get into overtime. It’s tough to take.”

Losing three straight to the Senators has been tough for Buffalo backers too. The President’s Trophy winners are on their way out while the Senators are on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals.

                    Pick: Senators -168

The Brewers are in a slump for the first time this season as they lost their third straight last night to the Phillies (4-3) on Carlos Ruiz' homer in the ninth. Overall the Brew Crew are just 1-4 on their current seven-game road trip. They face a tough challenge tonight in facing Cole Hamels, who comes in with a 5-1 record on the season. But while Hamels has pitched well (3.49 ERA), he has also benefited from significant run support as the Phils have averaged seven runs in his last three starts. Getting that kind of support off Jeff Suppan will be tough, though, as the veteran right-hander has posted a 2.63 ERA over his last five starts while leading Milwaukee to a 4-1 record. Suppan looks capable of getting Milwaukee back in the win column and makes the Brewers a good underdog pick (+140) according to Dunkel, which has Milwaukee favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Milwaukee (+140). Here are all of today's games.
