Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets: (-114, 8 ½)
It’s not every day you get this kind of value on the National League’s best team. It’s also not everyday that that team is the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers have won eight of their last 10, taking their record to a surprising 25-11 which includes a 12-3 trouncing of the New York Mets on Saturday. Milwaukee’s win was the sixth time in their last 10 games in which it held its opponent to fewer than four runs and the 18th time this season.
The Brewers can get win No. 26 on Sunday when undefeated left-hander Chris Capuano takes the mound. The team is 7-0 when Capuano starts this season. He pitched eight scoreless innings last Monday against Washington, dropping his ERA to 2.31, good enough for seventh in the National League.
Pick: Brewers +106
Atlanta Braves at Pittsburgh Pirates: (-103, 8)
Atlanta has held its opponents to two runs per game during its five-game winning streak and why shouldn't they can stay stingy when right-hander Anthony Lerew makes a homecoming of sorts on Sunday in Pittsburgh?
The Pennsylvania native brings his ever-improving sinker to PNC Park in front of family and friends on Mother’s Day. In his first start of the season, Lerew pitched six innings, struck out seven and allowed only two hits. Unfortunately, those two hits were solo home runs.
He gets a break today against a Pirates team that ranks near the bottom in almost every MLB hitting statistic. Pittsburgh is batting .235 over its 35 games this season, averaging slightly more than three runs per game.
Pick: Braves -105
Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins: (+105, 9)
Making your MLB debut on short notice in front of a nationally televised audience should be a breeze for any 24-year-old minor league pitcher, right? No pressure.
Tigers pitching prospect Virgil Vasquez knew as early as Wednesday that he might get the call up to the bigs but wasn’t officially penciled in until the weekend. The lack of prep time forced him to rush to Minnesota on Saturday for his first major league start, which just happens to be against the Twins on Sunday Night Baseball.
“It's your first big-league start,'' fellow pitcher Justin Verlander told reporters. “You're going to be over-anxious. You're going to be over-excited. It's just natural. But I know Virgil pretty well. He seems like the type of guy who could go out there and give us a chance to win.”
Vasquez was one of five minor leaguers the club considered for the last-minute callup. He has a variety of different pitches with solid control but lacks overpowering velocity. He has a 4-2 record in Triple-A this season with a 2.88 ERA.
Pick: Twins +105
