    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Warriors-Jazz Game 1 was outstanding entertainment, as Utah grabbed 1-0 lead with 116-112 win late Monday night. Game had a furious pace, looks like it will be fun series.

-- Carmona won third straight start for Cleveland, allowing four runs in 22.1 IP, after losing previous eleven decisions.

-- Chris Capuano tossed right shutout inning vs hapless Nationals, as Milwaukee moved its record to 22-10.

-- Willie McCovey was last Giant to hit two homers in same inning (in 1977) before Monday, when Benji Molina did it.

-- All I heard last year was Barry Zito wasn't good enough to get a big contract from one of the New York teams; well, he beat the Mets last night, and even got his second hit in 44 career at-bats.

-- All five teams in NL East lost Monday night.

Tuesday's list of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) It doesn't happen often, but one of our suggestions has come to fruition, as ESPN2 will televise the baseball amateur draft on June 7. This will develop into a big deal as time goes on-- who will be baseball's version of Mel Kiper, Jr?

      12) If you count the money spent on the fees teams paid for right to negotiate with their Japanese imports, Bronx payroll this year is around $231 million, Boston's around $193M. In their division sit the Devil Rays, at roughly $30M. Nice.

      11) Cubs are hot; they've won five games in row and eight of their last nine-- they visit the Mets at Shea next week.

      10) Since there is no state income tax in Texas, Bronx had to offer rougly 10% more money than Astros did so that their offer to Roger Clemens netted him same amount as Astros', much like the Mets did to get Carlos Beltran as a free agent.

      9) Clemens' ERAs the last three years, while pitching in an NL that is weaker than AL, with no DH: 2.98/1.87/2.30. He had a 38-18 record for Astros, allowing 409 hits in 539 IP (84 starts).

      8) Clemens' postseason record is 12-8, 3.66 in 34 starts. Red Sox fans didn't consider him great in the clutch.

      7) If Bronx was willing to shell out this much money to Roger, who not pay for Barry Zito, who postseason record is better than Clemens'? Plus, Zito hasn't missed a start in 6+ seasons.

      6) Clemens' total cost to Bronx, counting a luxury tax, will be more than combined salaries of every Tampa Bay Devil Ray.

      5) Did some reading on jury consultants Monday, and found out some interesting facts, such as roughly half of all the jury consultants are psychologists.

      4) There is a jury consultant in Texas who makes a tidy $8,500 a day to help pick juries. Good work if you can get it. Doing the math, that is $29,268.33 per juror, not counting alternates.

      3) The jury questionnaire in the OJ Simpson trial had over 300 questions, and was 75 pages long.

      2) Quote of the day:
"I think everyone should go to college and get a degree, and then spend six months as a bartender, and six months as a cab driver, then they really would be educated." Al McGuire

      1) The NFL rarely does stupid things, but holding the Super Bowl outside of this country would be a hideous idea.

Carter was 7-23, Kidd 2-11 from floor in 81-77 loss in Game 1 of series; Nets shot 37.2% from floor, were -14 on boards, as Cavs won despite going just 6-11 from foul line for game. Home team is now 4-0 in season series, with Nets losing all three games on this floor, by 5,18,4 points. Cleveland has yet to lose in playoffs winning home games by 15,7,4. Nets lost last three road games, by 6,2,4 points.

Popular theory on how to beat Suns is to turn Nash into more of a scorer than passer; he had 31 points in Game 1, while other Suns struggled to score (Stoudemire was 6-19). Duncan, Parker both had 30+; if Amare can't keep Duncan under 30, Suns will be in deep trouble here. Spurs were +14 on boards, shot 50% from floor. San Antonio has now won five games in a row.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at Florida Marlins (7:05 PM ET)
Los Angeles starter Mark Hendrickson is 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA in four career starts against Florida. EDGE: MARLINS
Hendrickson has enjoyed life on the road so far this season, allowing just three runs and eight hits over 13 2/3 innings. The Dodgers have picked up victories in his last three starts, after losing the first three games in which he appeared. EDGE: DODGERS
Florida's Wes Obermueller will look to bounce back in his second career start against the Dodgers, after being knocked around for five runs and five hits in just 2 2/3 innings of work last year - in a 10-6 loss to Los Angeles in 2005. EDGE: DODGERS
The Marlins are 0-4 in their last four games versus a left-handed starter.

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees (7:05 PM ET)
Texas pitcher Mike Wood makes his second start of the season tonight after allowing two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings in a 4-3 loss to the Yankees last week. SLIGHT EDGE: YANKEES

Life on the road hasn't been kind to Seattle starter Horacio Ramirez, with an 0-1 record and 14.63 ERA. The Mariners have lost both of his games on the road this season, with the teams combining for 28 runs. EDGE: TIGERS & OVER
Detroit's Jeremy Bonderman finally broke through for his first victory on the season last time out, picking up an 8-4 home victory over the Orioles. The Tigers have lost four of his first six starts on the season. SLIGHT EDGE: MARINERS
Bonderman has a 2-2 career record against Seattle and has struck out 22 batters in 32 1/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: TIGERS
The UNDER is 10-2-1 in the last 13 meetings.

Houston Astros at Cincinnati Reds (7:10 PM ET)

The Astros are 2-9 in Rodriguez's last 11 starts.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs (8:05 PM ET)
The Cubs have won eight of nine overall and are over .500 for the first time since the fifth game of the season. EDGE: CUBS
After a slow start, Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano has matched the longest hitting streak of his career with his fourth 15-game run. He's batting .359 during his streak. EDGE: CUBS
Chicago starter Ted Lilly looks to bounce back from his shortest outing of the season last time out, as he gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings last Tuesday against the Pirates. EDGE: PIRATES
Pittsburgh right-hander Ian Snell is 1-3 with a 8.31 ERA in four starts against the Cubs and struggled with his control against them last time out - issuing four walks and hitting a batter. EDGE: CUBS
The OVER is 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Cleveland Indians at Los Angeles Angels (10:05 PM ET)
Cleveland left-hander Cliff Lee was awful during six May starts last year, going 1-4 with a 7.79 ERA. He was knocked around in his only start at Anaheim Stadium last year, allowing five earned runs and seven hits in five innings of work. EDGE: ANGELS
Los Angeles starter Ervin Santana has been as good as it gets at home this season, knotching a perfect 2-0 record with a 1.93 ERA. BIG EDGE: ANGELS
Santana has struggled mightily against the Indians in his career with an 0-3 record and 13.50 ERA. He suffered a 7-6 road loss against Cleveland back on April 10th, allowing six runs and seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. BIG EDGE: INDIANS
The OVER is 5-0 in the last five meetings in Los Angeles.

Glavine will have to deal with slugger Barry Bonds in this contest, who's hitting .325 against him in his career with three home runs and 14 RBIs. SLIGHT EDGE: GIANTS
Amazingly enough, the Giants have picked up just one victory in pitcher Matt Cain's first six starts this season - despite his 3.08 ERA. He's allowed just 20 hits in 38 innings of work and has struck out 25 batters. SLIGHT EDGE: METS
Cain is a perfect 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA in two career starts against the Mets. EDGE: GIANTS
The UNDER is 4-0 in Glavine's last four starts versus the Giants.

#6 New Jersey Nets at #2 Cleveland Cavaliers
              Game 2 - Tuesday, May 6th, 8 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

The Cavs remained unbeaten in the postseason by playing outstanding defense and taking advantage of their size advantage to rebound the ball with reckless abandon in Game 1. Cleveland had 20 offensive boards and out-rebounded New Jersey 51-37 with Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Drew Gooden each pulling down 14. EDGE: CAVS
The Nets need to push the tempo if they want to drastically improve their odds of heading back to New Jersey with a split. Cleveland held opponents to 92.9 points per game during the regular season, and the Nets are just 8-29 SU when scoring 93 points or less. Look for a more focused effort in Game 2 knowing the team needs to drastically improve on the dreadful 37 percent shooting from Game 1 to have a chance. SLIGHT EDGE: NETS
Cleveland star LeBron James battled a head cold in Game 1 but still managed to total 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Some may question whether or not James was truly sick, wondering if it was just a ploy to get into New Jersey's head. His results speak for themselves though, and insiders only expect a better performance in Game 2. EDGE: CAVS
New Jersey is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 games overall.
New Jersey is 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings in Cleveland.
New Jersey is 13-2 ATS in the last 15 meetings overall.
Cleveland is 29-13-1 ATS in its last 43 games overall.

              Head-to-Head Recaps

SECOND-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

Cleveland leads 1-0 SU (New Jersey 1-0 ATS)
              UNDER 1-0

              5/6/07 - Game 1: CLEVELAND 81, New Jersey 77 (ATS winner: NJ +6 | UNDER 184.5)
              Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Both teams struggled offensively in the lowest-scoring game of the playoffs so far, cashing an easy UNDER. The Nets managed to stay close despite shooting just 37 percent from the field, pulling within 79-77 with 19.5 seconds left on two free throws by Vince Carter. LeBron James answered for Cleveland with the final basket of the game on a driving lineup, and the Cavs held on the win but not the cover.

              REMAINING SCHEDULE

5/8/07 - Game 2: New Jersey at CLEVELAND (TNT | 8 PM ET)
              5/12/07 - Game 3 - Cleveland at NEW JERSEY (ESPN | 5 PM ET)
              5/14/07 - Game 4 - Cleveland at NEW JERSEY (TNT | 7 PM ET)
              5/16/07 - Game 5 - New Jersey at CLEVELAND (TNT | TBD)
              5/18/07 - Game 6 - Cleveland at NEW JERSEY (ESPN | TBD)
              5/20/07 - Game 7 - New Jersey at CLEVELAND (TNT | TBD)

              REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Cleveland wins 2-1 SU (New Jersey 2-1 ATS)
              OVER 2-1

              4/12/07 - CLEVELAND 94, New Jersey 76 (ATS winner: Cleve -6 | UNDER 186)
              1/6/06 - CLEVELAND 96, New Jersey 91 (ATS winner: NJ +6.5 | OVER 186.5)
              12/20/06 - NEW JERSEY 113, Cleveland 111 (ATS winner: NJ -1 | OVER 186)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The Cavs have turned things around against the Nets over the last two years, winning four of the last five meetings, including two of three this season. New Jersey had won the previous five meetings and is still 12-2 ATS in the last 14 games between the teams, including 7-1 in Cleveland. All eyes will be on Cavs star LeBron James, who averaged 30.3 points in the last three games against the Nets, going for 35 or more twice. James poses a huge matchup problem for New Jersey since Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson were not at a size disadvantage in the first round against Toronto. They will be here, and it could very well be the difference as James will likely look to take over this series on his own.

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#3 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Phoenix Suns
              Game 2 - Tuesday, May 8th, 10:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

The status of Steve Nash is obviously a top concern for the Suns, who need their MVP to be aggressive offensively both passing and scoring if they are to even this series at 1-1. Nash's collision with San Antonio's Tony Parker late in the game may force him to be more cautious when driving the ball inside the paint and take away from his ability to dish the ball under pressure. SLIGHT EDGE: SPURS
Parker continues to burn the Suns, totaling 32 points and eight assists in Game 1 despite the collision with Nash. Phoenix must consider playing Shawn Marion on him for more extended stretches, or find another defender who can be physical with him. Until that happens, Parker will continue to be a thorn in Phoenix's side. EDGE: SPURS
Outside of Amare Stoudemire (18 rebounds, five offensive) and Marion (six total), no other Sun grabbed more than three. Phoenix must do a better job on the glass , especially against San Antonio's Tim Duncan, who had eight offensive rebounds on his own which helped fuel the team's offense. This was just the first time in seven games the Spurs out-rebounded an opponent, so the Suns can likely even this series by simply winning the battle of the boards and making a few more shots. SLIGHT EDGE: SUNS
San Antonio is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Phoenix.
San Antonio is 13-5 ATS in the last 18 meetings overall.
UNDER is 8-1 in San Antonio's last 9 games.

              Head-to-Head Recaps

SECOND-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

San Antonio leads 1-0 SU & ATS
              OVER 1-0

              5/6/07 - Game 1: San Antonio 111, PHOENIX 106 (ATS winner: SA +4.5 | UNDER 199.5)
              Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: This was a classic playoff battle throughout, leading up to a violent collision between Phoenix point guard Steve Nash and San Antonio's Tony Parker with 2:53 remaining. Nash got the worst of it and had to leave the game in the final minute with a bloody nose that required six stitches at the end of the game. His absence led to two failed offensive possessions, and a return with 9.1 seconds left was too late. The Spurs won despite the pace being far more high-scoring than they like, as they made a couple more big shots and held a 49-35 rebounding edge.

              REMAINING SCHEDULE

5/8/07 - Game 2: San Antonio at PHOENIX (TNT | 10:30 PM ET)
5/12/07 - Game 3: Phoenix at SAN ANTONIO (ABC | 8 PM ET)
5/14/07 - Game 4: Phoenix at SAN ANTONIO (TNT | 9:30 PM ET)
5/16/07 - Game 5: San Antonio at PHOENIX (TNT | TBD)
5/18/07 - Game 6: Phoenix at SAN ANTONIO (ESPN | TBD)
5/20/07 - Game 7: San Antonio at PHOENIX ( TBD)

              REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

San Antonio wins 2-1 SU (Phoenix 2-1 ATS)
              UNDER 2-1

              4/5/07 - SAN ANTONIO 92, Phoenix 85 (ATS winner: SA -4 | UNDER 205.5)
              2/1/07 - PHOENIX 103, San Antonio 87 (ATS winner: Pho -6.5 | UNDER 206)
              11/8/06 - SAN ANTONIO 111, Phoenix 106 (ATS winner: Pho +5.5 | OVER 206)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Home court was the deciding factor in all three meetings this season, with the first going OVER in overtime. San Antonio's Tony Parker was the top overall player in the season series, getting the best of Phoenix's Steve Nash by averaging 28 points per game. The Suns obviously love to run, and the Spurs are better at adapting to this style of play with Parker and Manu Ginobili, who scored 32 points off the bench in the second meeting. Phoenix has a much more difficult time when it becomes a more defensive-minded game, proven by the last meeting. Whichever team can dictate the tempo more will likely win this series and become the favorite to represent the Western Conference in the 2007 NBA Finals.

                    Tampa Bay at Baltimore
The Orioles started out well, winning 11 of their first 18, but since that time have dropped 11 of 14. The middle of the order (Tejeda, Huff and Mora) has struggled recently as the trio have no HRs and just 2 RBI in their last five games. Pitching hasn't been much better and the Orioles will be forced today to go with reliever Jeremy Guthrie in place of the injured Jaret Wright. Guthrie lost in his only start this season and has given up 6 runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief ball since then. Tampa starter Jae Seo is coming off his best start of the season against the Twins (2 runs, 7 hits in 6 innings) and the Devil Rays are a decent 4-2 in his starts thus far. The D-Rays look like a good underdog pick (+140) in this one according to Dunkel, which Tampa Bay favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Tampa Bay (+140). has L.A. favored straight up by 2. New Jersey at Cleveland
The Nets couldn't have played much worse in Game One as they were outrebounded 51-37, while allowing the Cavaliers to collect 20 offensive boards and being held to 19 points below their playoff average. Vince Carter was especially dreadful as he went 1-for-8 in the second half from the field, including 0-for-5 in the fourth quarter. But even with all the problems, the Nets still had a chance to win late and kept it under the spread in an 81-77 loss to run their postseason road record to 3-0-1 ATS against Cleveland's 1-2 home mark. The Nets look like a good underdog pick (+5) in Game Two according to Dunkel, which has Cleveland favored by just 1. Dunkel Pick: New Jersey (+5). Here are all of today's games.

                        Streaking Pitchers

                        Tuesday, May 8

                        Hot

Mark Hendrickson (Los Angeles Dodgers) - We never thought we would see this guy at the top of this list, but you can't deny the numbers the lanky lefty is putting up. Hendrickson is 2-0 over his last three starts with a sparkling 1.08 ERA for the Dodgers, who are -123 road favorites tonight against the Florida Marlins. The former college basketball standout has given up only one home run in just over 27 innings on the season while only walking five batters.

Ian Snell (Pittsburgh Pirates) - Like Hendrickson, here's another pitcher that rarely graces the 'hot' portion of streakers. After posting a 4.74 ERA last season, Snell has been lights-out this season with a 2.31 ERA through six starts. Snell has been particularily solid since mid-April, with a .309 OBP against and 1.26 WHIP. Bettors should note Snell's undefeated record on the road in 2007. The Pirates are +144 underdogs at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

                        Cold

Adam Eaton (Philadelphia Phillies) - Eaton's stats suck all the value out of taking the Phillies tonight. Whether it's Eaton's 9.98 ERA in his last three trips to the bump, .455 OBP against, or absolutely brutal 2.22 WHIP, you would have to be reckless to bet on Philadelphia with Eaton taking the ball. Oddsmakers have the Phillies priced as +105 road underdogs for tonight's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Horacio Ramirez (Seattle Mariners) - There's a reason the Mariners are +172 underdogs tonight against the Detroit Tigers, and Ramirez has everything to do with it. The left-hander has been atrocious since April 16, allowing almost half the batters he's faced to reach base to the tune of almost three base runners an inning. To make matters worse for Mariners bettors, Ramirez has an 8.79 ERA during that span as well as a 14.62 ERA on the road this season.

                            Tuesday, May 8

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins: (-113, 8 ½)

The White Sox’s pitching philosophy is to throw hard and let the defense sort it out. Chicago’s staff has taken a more aggressive approach this season and avoided picking around the corners of the strike zone.

Putting the pressure on their fielders has paid off for the ChiSox, who have a team ERA of 3.87 and have allowed only 2.82 walks per nine innings. Opponents are only hitting .232 against Chicago’s staff.

"The way we've done things here, if you can't throw it over the plate, we can't use you," pitching coach Don Cooper told the Chicago Tribune. "We're looking to attack. The pitchers know that, A.J. (Pierzynski) knows that. So I think we are good at that. Hits and runs add up. Hits and walks make runs. We want them to swing the bats."

The Twins have had trouble with the White Sox’s pitchers in the two meetings between these teams this year. Minnesota is hitting a dismal .148 and has split games with Chicago. The Twins are also without last season’s American League batting champion, Joe Mauer, who is out with a pulled left quadriceps.

                            Pick: White Sox +105

Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks: (-113, 10)

Lady rocker Sheryl Crow told us, “A change will do you good.”

We tend to do anything the ageless Ms. Crow says, but when it comes to baseball, a change, especially with a pitcher, can lead to very bad things.

Phillies starter Adam Eaton is going through some big changes with his mechanics since starting the season 3-2 with a plump 8.18 ERA. Pitching coach Rich Dubee is working with the right-hander to improve his stretch, noting that Eaton is keeping his hands together too long before throwing the baseball.

"We've got to get him going on the right track. He needs to find that rhythm and that timing,” Dubee told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Eaton can find his form on his own time and his own dime.

                            Pick: Diamondbacks -113

Cleveland Indians at Los Angeles Angels: (-115, 9)

Tribe bettors can thank starter Cliff Lee for the value on one of baseball’s hottest teams. Tuesday marks the left-hander's second start of the season since coming off the disabled list. In his first start, Lee gave up five runs in six innings to the Toronto Blue Jays before getting bailed out by the Indians’ bats.

Not to fear, Cliff, the bats still have your back. Cleveland has won 12 of its last 15 games behind some very clutch hitting. The Indians are hitting .299 with runners in scoring position over the last 16 games and have driven in over six runs per contests during this stretch.

Cleveland will continue this run production against Angels' righty, Ervin Santana, who is 0-3 with a 13.50 career ERA against the Tribe.

                            Pick: Indians +107
