Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) Another terrific evening of televised sports, as Warriors are putting Dallas away as I type this; Canucks-Ducks are on their way to a second OT, and Mets just scored six in the 9th to come from behind to beat the Diamondbacks. Good stuff.

    12) Vancouver actually started the first OT without its goalie Luongo, who had an equipment problem; he returned to the game soon after, but tough spot for Sabourin, his backup.

Ducks won game and series at 4:30 of second OT, 3-2.

    11) All of Orange County can thank Mrs Pronger, who forced Edmonton Oilers to trade her husband because, supposedly, she hated living in Alberta. She is from St Louis, and now her husband is in Final Four of Stanley Cup playoffs.

    10) Arizona inserted Tony Clark at 1B in ninth inning with 4-3 lead for defense, but the first ball hit to him went through his legs, and Mets won on to score six in the ninth for a 9-4 win.

    9) Moises Alou left game in sixth inning with knee problem; older players get hurt more often, and Mets have their share.

    8) Matsuzaka gave up five runs in first inning on only couple hits, allowed seven runs in five IP, but Red Sox rallied for 8-7 win, thanks to long Ramirez HR over the bullpens at Fenway. In two starts where he was making his second start against an opponent, Matsuzaka allowed 11 runs in 11 innings, which is not exactly getting your $103M worth.

    7) Papelbon didn't pitch for Boston, which makes you believe he has injury issues, since he threw 36 pitches Tuesday, blew the save, then spent rest of game throwing things in Red Sox dugout. He didn't pitch Wednesday; closers rarely are out of action two nights in a row. Something has to be wrong.

    6) Timlin is on the DL, Lester's rehab start ended early, things are suddenly not going as well in Beantown, who no doubt are aware that Bronx swept a twinbill in Arlington Thursday.

    5) I know there was full moon this week, but the Brewers are in first place in NL Central, and Devil Rays are tied for second in AL East (13-15, but still, tied for second). NFL Films has a famous clip of Vince Lombardi on the Packer sidelines, after giving up a TD, yelling, "What the hell's going on out there?"

That quote fits today's baseball standings.

    4) What a horrible series for Mavericks, who got spanked by the 8-seed Warriors, losing last night even though Davis did his best Willis Reed imitation and hobbled around on a lame hamstring. Not only did Golden State pull one of the biggest upsets in playoff history, they also ended Mavs' the 17-game winning streak during the regular season.

    3) Dallas went 67-15 in the regular season and will be viewed as an abject failure. Big decisions now; do they just retool, and come back next year, or do they dismantle the nucleus of team, which could be an overreaction to the Warrior series?

With their season on the line, Dallas, a 1-seed, lost 111-86 to an 8-seed. What a tank job.

    2) Baron Davis didn't miss a game in his first three seasons in NBA, but in seven years since, has missed an average of 36 games per season. When he plays, he is an elite player.

    1) My question is this: Where the hell were these Warriors all season long? They came thisclose to not making the playoffs

Toronto has PGs Ford/Calderon banged up, need win in Swamp to get back to Canada for Game 7, and hope that Carter goes in tank the way he did for Raptors vs Philly few years back. Nets won two home games in this series, 102-89/102-81; they almost rallied for clinching win in Game 5 in Toronto, losing by a hoop after trailing 33-13 in first quarter. Raptors were just 8-31 from arc in first two games at New Jersey.

Rangers were 0-6 vs Buffalo this season before winning pair of 2-1 decisions at home; now they need to win in Buffalo, where they've lost games this season by 7-4/4-3/5-2/3-2 scores. So far in series, Sabres are just 3-25 on power play (Rangers are 5-19). Neither side scored in first period last two games; Rangers own 3-0 second period scoring edge over last three games, but the Sabres have 6-3 edge in third period.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#3 Toronto Raptors at #6 New Jersey Nets
                Game 6 - Friday, May 4th, 8 p.m. Eastern (ESPN)

The Raptors are hopeful one of their two top point guards will play. It's far more likely that backup Jose Calderon will play than T.J. Ford, who is still not feeling well after his collision with New Jersey's Vince Carter in the first quarter of Game 5. Ford has a history of neck and back problems and had to be taken to a local hospital before returning to watch his team pull off the latest win. Calderon is one of the league's top backups, but he is suffering from a sprained ankle that happened in the final minute of the game. Whoever plays will have their hands full with New Jersey's Jason Kidd, who is averaging a triple double in the series with 13.2 points, 12.8 assists and 10.4 rebounds per game. EDGE: NETS
Toronto's Chris Bosh has been a big disappointment for the most part in this series, turning in his third straight sub-par performance and first at home in Game 5. Bosh was in foul trouble yet again and has at least three fouls in four of the five games. He has averaged just 12 points on the road in this series compared to 19.3 at home. BIG EDGE: NETS
Raptors head coach Sam Mitchell might have something up his sleeve for Game 6, as he said he might have a surprise in store depending on the availability of Ford and Calderon. Mitchell made a brilliant move in Game 5, playing rookie Andrea Bargnani at center for the first time in the series and inserting Morris Peterson into the starting lineup. Bargnani scored a series-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds while Peterson scored more points in Game 5 (17) than he did in the previous four games combined (15). Moves like these earned Mitchell NBA Coach of the Year honors. EDGE: RAPTORS
After shooting just 30 percent and averaging 17.5 points in the first two games of the series, Carter has caught fire for the Nets. The free-agent to-be has shown a lot of motivation in the last three games, averaging 31.3 points on 57 percent shooting. The biggest difference for Carter has come from beyond the 3-point arc, where he made just 2-of-10 shots in the first two games and has gone 11-of-19 since (58 percent). EDGE: NETS
The Nets have won the last four home meetings with the Raptors by an average of nearly 15 points.
The home team is 8-2-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
Toronto is 1-8 ATS in its last 9 games overall.
New Jersey is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 games overall.
UNDER is 13-5 in Toronto's last 18 vs. Atlantic Division opponents.
UNDER is 8-3 in New Jersey's last 11 vs. Atlantic Division opponents.
UNDER is 23-8 in the last 31 meetings.

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

New Jersey leads 3-2 SU & 4-1 ATS

                5/1/07 - Game 5: TORONTO 98, New Jersey 96 (ATS winner: New Jersey +3.5 | OVER 189.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Raptors got off a roaring start in this one, jumping out to a commanding 33-13 lead after the first quarter. However, they lost starting point guard T.J. Ford to a stinger when he collided with New Jersey's Vince Carter early on, and the Nets slowly chipped away at the lead. New Jersey got within one in the final minute when Carter nailed a 3-pointer with 27.6 seconds remaining and then Bostjan Nachbar missed what would have been the game-winner as time expired. The 54 points scored by New Jersey in the second half along with 59 in the first by Toronto led to the OVER cashing while the Nets didn't get the win, but they got the cover.

                4/29/07 - Game 4: NEW JERSEY 102, Toronto 81 (ATS winner: New Jersey -4 | OVER 190.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nets jumped out to another huge lead, outscoring the Raptors 32-15 in the first quarter. New Jersey by as many as 33 in a complete rout, and Toronto's best quarter of 25 points in the fourth wasn't nearly enough to save the OVER.

                4/24/07 - Game 3: NEW JERSEY 102, Toronto 89 (ATS winner: New Jersey -4 | OVER 190)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nets got off to a strong start, leading 31-19 at the end of the first quarter and 58-39 at halftime. While the Raptors outscored them 29-21 in the third, they never really threatened the spread. Vince Carter scored a game-high 37 points for New Jersey while Jason Kidd had a monster triple double with 16 points, 16 rebounds and 19 assists despite playing with a knee injury. The total went OVER on a T.J. Ford jumper with 1:41 remaining, which turned out to be the last scoring play of the game.

                4/24/07 - Game 2: TORONTO 89, New Jersey 83 (ATS winner: Toronto -5.5 | UNDER 193.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The OVER in this game was virtually killed at the end of the first quarter with Toronto up 14-12. The Nets held an 83-82 lead with 46 seconds left and then Bostjan Nachbar missed a 3-pointer with eight seconds left that would have tied it. Anthony Parker then sealed the deal for the Ratpors and their backers by making three straight free throws to earn a win and cover, tying up the series at a game apiece.

                4/21/07 - Game 1: New Jersey 96, TORONTO 91 (ATS winner: New Jersey +4.5 | UNDER 194)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nets came out firing on all cylinders and took advantage of some first-half foul trouble by Toronto's Chris Bosh. Experience definitely looked to be the difference early on as New Jersey built a 51-41 halftime lead. T.J. Ford kept the Raptors in the game with 21 points and then backup Jose Calderon ignited a 17-5 run to open the fourth quarter and pull Toronto within 84-83. However, former Raptor Vince Carter overcame a poor 5-for-19 shooting day by making some key free throws down the stretch as the Nets held off the home team.

                REMAINING SCHEDULE

5/4/07 - Game 6: Toronto at NEW JERSEY (ESPN | 8 PM ET)
5/6/07 - Game 7: New Jersey at TORONTO (IF NECESSARY, TBD)

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Series tied 2-2 SU & ATS
                UNDER 3-1

                2/14/07 - TORONTO 120, New Jersey 109 (ATS winner: Toronto -9.5 | OVER 190)
                1/9/07 - NEW JERSEY 101, Toronto 86 (ATS winner: New Jersey -3.5 | UNDER 194.5)
                12/15/06 - TORONTO 90, New Jersey 78 (ATS winner: Toronto +2.5 | UNDER 193)
                11/1/06 - NEW JERSEY 102, Toronto 92 (ATS winner: New Jersey -7 | UNDER 202)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: This could very well be the best matchup in the first round since each team won two home games en route to splitting the season series. Both meetings in Toronto had players missing for each team, as Chris Bosh missed the first meeting there and Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd sat out the second. The key could very well be former Raptor Vince Carter, who is a free agent at the end of the year and would love nothing more than to stick it to his former team. However, Carter averaged just 14.5 points in Toronto this season on poor 28 percent shooting. Bosh gives the Raptors a serious advantage inside though and could have a coming-out party in his first playoffs similar to Amare Stoudemire a couple years ago.
