Rangers right-hander Robinson Tejada will give it another go against a Yankees team that blasted him for six runs ans seven hits in just three innings of work in his only start against them. EDGE: YANKEES
The OVER is 13-3 in Pettitte's last 16 starts with four days of rest.
The UNDER is 8-1-1 in Tejada's last 10 starts overall.

Los Angeles Angels at Kansas City Royals (8:10 PM ET)
Angels right-hander Ervin Santana is winless at 0-3 with a 9.64 ERA in three road starts this season. BIG EDGE: ROYALS
Kansas City starter Jorge De La Rosa is a perfect 2-0 with a lights-out ERA of 0.60 at Kaufmann Stadium. The twenty-three-year-old left-hander lost his only career start against the Angels, allowing four runs over 6 2/3 innings of work. SLIGHT EDGE: ROYALS
The Angels are 17-4 in the last 21 meetings in Kansas City.
The UNDER is 12-2 in the last 14 meetings.

Colorado left-hander Jeff Francis is 3-4 with a 6.11 ERA in 10 career starts against San Francisco. EDGE: GIANTS

San Francisco's Barry Zito threw six shutout innings against Colorado on April 16 for a 8-0 victory. Zito has struggled a bit at home this season with his 4.91 ERA being a full run higher than his ERA on the road. SLIGHT EDGE: GIANTS
The OVER is 10-3 in Rockies' last 13 games versus a left-handed starter.
The Rockies are 1-4 in Francis' last five road starts versus the Giants.

#6 Denver Nuggets at #3 San Antonio Spurs
      Game 5 - Wednesday, May 2nd, 8 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

As much as they wanted to avoid this nearly identical scenario of two years ago, the Nuggets are right on course for another complete meltdown after winning Game 1 at San Antonio. The Spurs outscored them 29-16 in the fourth quarter of Game 4 with Allen Iverson again struggling to shoot the ball. Iverson was supposed to be the main difference this time around but has shot just 36 percent (25-of-70) in the last three games after connecting on 11-of-22 for a series-high 31 points in Game 1. EDGE: SPURS
San Antonio had two players named to the NBA's All-Defensive First Team (Tim Duncan and Bruce Bowen), which just exemplifies how the tide has turned in this series. The Spurs have limited the Nuggets to an average of 89.3 points in the last three games, more than 15 points below their season average. EDGE: SPURS
"Big Shot Rob" continues to be a dagger in the side of Denver, coming up big for the second straight game when he hit a huge 3-pointer with 30 seconds left in Game 4. That's right, Robert Horry did it again to the Nuggets despite scoring just six points. If the Spurs are looking for a key reserve to help close out the series, Horry might just be the player to do it yet again in Game 5. EDGE: SPURS
Denver is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 road games.
Favorite is 11-4 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
UNDER is 23-7-1 in the last 31 meetings between the teams.
UNDER is 19-8-1 in San Antonio's last 28 home games.

      Head-to-Head Recaps
FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

San Antonio leads 3-1 SU & ATS
      UNDER 4-0

      4/30/07 - Game 4: San Antonio 96, DENVER 89 (ATS winner: San Antonio -2 | UNDER 190)
      Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nuggets blew a 10-point second-half lead and were outscored 29-16 in the fourth quarter after playing their best first half of the series. Denver led 50-42 at the break but again had trouble scoring down the stretch, finishing the game with the team's lowest-scoring quarter of the series to lose and send the total UNDER.

      4/28/07 - Game 3: San Antonio 96, DENVER 91 (ATS winner: San Antonio -1.5 | UNDER 193)
      Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Spurs took control of this game in the second quarter, outscoring the Nuggets 21-15 to take a 43-40 halftime lead. San Antonio then scored a series-high 32 points in the third and held off a late Denver rally for the second straight game to pull off the victory. Besides the high-scoring third, neither team scored more than 25 points in any of the other quarters to push the total UNDER.

      4/25/07 - Game 2: SAN ANTONIO 97, Denver 88 (ATS winner: San Antonio -8.5 | UNDER 193.5)
      Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nuggets cut a 17-point San Antonio lead to just three points with 45 seconds yet still failed to cover the spread. The Spurs got a jumper from Tim Duncan followed by a pair of free throws by both Michael Finley and Tony Parker to beat the line by half a point. San Antonio played much better defensively to force another UNDER even though Denver scored 28 points in the fourth to make it close.

      4/22/07 - Game 1: Denver 95, SAN ANTONIO 89 (ATS winner: Denver +8.5 | UNDER 197)
      Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nuggets rode their dynamic duo of Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony to a stunning road victory, jumping out to a 21-16 lead at the end of the first quarter and outscoring them 28-23 in the fourth. Iverson scored just one point in the first but had 11 in the third en route to a game-high 31 while Anthony added 30. The Spurs got to the free-throw line just 10 times compared to 25 for Denver and were outrebounded 44-35, including 28-19 in the first half.

      REMAINING SCHEDULE

5/2/07 - Game 5: Denver at SAN ANTONIO (IF NECESSARY, TBD)
5/4/07 - Game 6: San Antonio at DENVER (IF NECESSARY, TBD)
5/6/07 - Game 7: Denver at SAN ANTONIO (IF NECESSARY, TBD)

      REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

San Antonio wins 2-1 SU & ATS
      UNDER 3-0

      4/18/07 - Denver 100, SAN ANTONIO 77 (ATS winner: Denver +5 | UNDER 194.5)
      2/20/07 - SAN ANTONIO 95, Denver 80 (ATS winner: San Antonio -7 | UNDER 202)
      1/10/07 - San Antonio 92, DENVER 83 (ATS winner: San Antonio -5 | UNDER 200)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The only regular-season meeting when both teams were at full strength came on February 20th. Denver's duo of Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson had a rough shooting night, making a combined 9-of-26 shots and totaling 24 points between them as the Spurs returned home for the first time in more than three weeks. San Antonio outscored the Nuggets 30-10 in the third quarter to take a 31-point lead into the fourth quarter. Neither team played their starters in the season finale, and Anthony missed the first meeting due to his highly-publicized suspension for fighting at Madison Square Garden. Denver averaged 108.5 points in winning 10 of 11 to close out the regular season, but whether or not this team can play with discipline against the defensive-minded Spurs remains to be seen.

#7 Los Angeles Lakers at #2 Phoenix Suns
      Game 5 - Wednesday, May 5th, 10:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

It's become clear that the Lakers can't run with the Suns and have no chance in a high-scoring game because they simply don't have the right personnel. LA's Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom would probably love to play in the Phoenix system but can't maintain a consistent amount of energy on their own against a team that has arguably the best seven-man rotation in the NBA. BIG EDGE: SUNS
The Suns would love to close out this series as soon as possible to get a breather before meeting likely opponent San Antonio in the second round. They won the first two home games by an average of 18 points and another blowout is possible here if the two teams both come out blazing again like in Game 4. EDGE: SUNS
Lakers are 7-18-1 in their last 26 games.
Suns are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games.
UNDER is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in Phoenix.

      Head-to-Head Recaps
FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

Phoenix leads 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS)
      OVER/UNDER 2-2

      4/29/07 - Game 4: Phoenix 113, LA LAKERS 100 (ATS winner: Phoenix -6 | OVER 207)
      Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Suns played their pace and rewarded backers by covering and going OVER the total. They outscored the Lakers 33-28 in the first quarter to set the tempo and then averaged nearly 27 points in the last three to earn the victory.

      4/26/07 - Game 3: LA LAKERS 95, Phoenix 89 (ATS winner: LA +4 | UNDER 210)
      Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: LA star Kobe Bryant saved his best for the last quarter of a game for the first time in the series, scoring 15 of his game-high 45 points to lead the Lakers to a much-needed victory. Bryant also dished out six assists while teammates Lamar Odom (18 points, 16 rebounds) and Kwame Brown (19, 7) also enjoyed their best games of the series. The Suns had scored the first 11 points of the game and blew a 31-14 lead, tying the game at 89 with 2:03 left in the fourth but failing to score again after that.

      4/24/07 - Game 2: PHOENIX 126, LA Lakers 98 (ATS winner: Phoenix -8.5 | OVER 207)
      Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Suns made sure to get off to a strong start in Game 2, scoring nearly 30 points more in the first half than they did in Game 1. They outscored the Lakers in every quarter with 27 points or more in each to push a strong OVER pace. LA tried to keep up but failed in what turned out to be the biggest blowout of the playoffs so far.

      4/22/07 - Game 1: PHOENIX 95, LA Lakers 87 (ATS winner: LA +10.5 | UNDER 211)
      Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Lakers built a 48-39 halftime lead behind 28 points from Kobe Bryant, who was just as cold in the second half as he was hot in the first. Bryant missed 11 of his last 12 shots, going 1-of-10 in the fourth quarter when they were outscored 21-10. The Suns also outscored LA 35-29 in the third to give the OVER a glimmer of hope, but that torrid pace ended abruptly with the poor shooting down the stretch.

      REMAINING SCHEDULE

5/2/07 - Game 5: LA Lakers at PHOENIX (TNT | 10:30 PM ET)
5/4/07 - Game 6: Phoenix at LA LAKERS (IF NECESSARY, TBD)
5/6/07 - Game 7: LA Lakers at PHOENIX (IF NECESSARY, TBD)

      REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Phoenix wins 3-1 SU (Lakers 3-1 ATS)
      OVER/UNDER 2-2

      4/13/07 - PHOENIX 93, LA Lakers 85 (ATS winner: LAL +9.5 | UNDER 220.5)
      4/8/07 - Phoenix 115, LA LAKERS 107 (ATS winner: Pho -4.5 | OVER 218)
      3/4/07 - PHOENIX 99, LA Lakers 94 (ATS winner: LAL +10 | UNDER 219.5)
      10/31/06 - LA LAKERS 114, Phoenix 106 (ATS winner: LAL +5 | OVER 209.5)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The Suns sent a message to the Lakers by winning the last three meetings after losing the season opener at LA, 114-106. That lone setback in the season series came during a 1-5 start for Phoenix, and Kobe Bryant did not even play in that game. Lamar Odom scored a game-high 34 points in the victory while Bryant averaged 27.3 points in the other three meetings on 26.3 shots per game. Bryant and the Lakers still seem to be haunted by their collapse in last year's first-round series against the Suns, when they blew a 3-1 lead and saw him score just 1 point in the second half of Phoenix's Game 7 rout.

          Wednesday's list of 13: Random mid-week thoughts..........

          13) Another outstanding set of games late Tuesday; in NHL, Anaheim-Vancouver, Golden State-Dallas in NBA and four west coast baseball games. Fine time of year, always lot of stuff on TV, good entertainment.

Warriors choked in Dallas; they had Mavericks down by six in last 2:00, with glorious chance to close out series, but took series of horrible shots down stretch, as Nowitzki took game over and sent series back to Oakland.

          12) In his last four starts, Arizona's Brandon Webb has struck 24 hitters, gotten 54 ground ball outs and only 12 outs in the air. Webb always needs a strong infield behind him.

          11) A's had great win in Fenway Tuesday night, but you just know things are bleak when they acquire two players in last week; Ryan Langerhans, hitting .068 (3-44) this season, and Chris Denorfia, who is out for the year after elbow surgery. How many guys get traded three weeks after major surgery?

          10) All of which means Milton Bradley will be hitting the road after the season; the guy is always hurt. Will be interesting to see if he can sucker another team into paying him.

          9) In their franchise history, Padres played six home games of 17 or more innings, and have lost all six.

          8) Of the 144 teams that made baseball playoffs between '82 and '06, only eight of them finished April four or more games under .500. '79 Pirates are only World Series champ in group.

          7) Pirates' Freddie Sanchez his .224 in April, lowest average in April for defending batting champ since when Willie McGee, back in 1986, hit .222 for the Cardinals.

          6) Phil Hughes tossed 6.1 hitless innings in his second major league start Tuesday at Texas, but left the game with a left leg injury, which looked like a hamstring.

          5) Over last five seasons, the AL Wild Card team has won an average of 96 games; it is tough to qualify for Wild Card.

          4) From last April to this April, slugging percentage in major leagues was down 28 points; whats the cause? Bad weather? Drug testing? Dead baseballs? Thin-handled bats? Bad wood in the bats? We'll see if trends holds up as the weather gets warmer and drier.

          3) Milwaukee's Francisco Cordero struck out 19 of the first 41 hitters he faced, while allowing only two hits. Not bad.

          2) Who says Vanderbilt never goes bowling? Maybe not in football, but the Commodores' mens' bowling team won the national championship this year.

          1) Coming later this week on this website: analysis, picks on the Kentucky Derby from my racing experts. Log on Friday for this interesting feature.............

San Antonio held Iverson to 9-25 in Game 4, scored first seven points of fourth quarter after trailing 73-67 after three, then held on late to sweep games in Denver and take 3-1 series lead. San Antonio trailed by 8 at half in Game 4. Nuggets were 5-28 from arc in two home games, Spurs 17-46.

Suns can put Kobe's Lakers away for second straight year with win here; in their three series wins, Phoenix took 24-19-31 free throws; in their loss, they took 12. Nash had 23 assists in Game 4, which meant his teammates were making lot of shots, mostly open shots. Suns just have lot more scorers than Lakers.

Home side is 5-0 in Houston-Utah series; Rockets made 12-24 treys in narrow Game 5 win, fifth straight series game that Jazz led at halftime. Houston shot series-high 46.7% from floor last game, but can they make that many treys on road? Battier took seven shots in Game 4, all treys, and was 5-7, sparking win.

                  Streaking Pitchers

                  HOT

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) - Move over Tom Brady because Beckett is taking over in New England. The right-hander is a staggering 5-0 with a spectacular 2.48 ERA and 1.04 WHIP and is the first Red Sox pitcher to win his first five starts since Pedro Martinez. Beckett can become the first Boston pitcher to win his first six starts since Roger Clemens did it in 1991. Beckett is 3-0 at Fenway Park with a solid 2.75 ERA and 1.02 WHIP.

Chris Capuano (Milwaukee Brewers) - The NL Central leading Milwaukee Brewers can thank Chris Capuano for some of their early successes this season. The left-hander has started the season with four consecutive victories and has a respectable 3.21 ERA and 1.25 WHIP and is 2-0 on the road with an unbelievable 0.77 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Overall, the Brewers are 27-7 when Capuano is on the mound at Miller Park.

                  COLD

Anthony Reyes (St. Louis Cardinals) - It has been a difficult season off the field for the St. Louis Cardinals but it hasn't been much easier on the field for Anthony Reyes. The right-hander is 0-5 to start the campaign with a dismal 5.73 ERA and has allowed at least three earned runs in each of his first four starts. Reyes and the Cardinals face the NL Central leading Milwaukee Brewers tonight at Miller Park as a +125 underdog.

John Danks (Chicago White Sox) - Rookie left-hander John Danks is looking for the first win of his short career against the Seattle Mariners. Overall, Danks is 0-3 with a lofty 5.32 ERA and 1.45 WHIP and is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.70 WHIP outside U.S. Cellular Field. To make matters worse for the rookie left-hander, the White Sox are 8-17 in their last 25 meetings with the Mariners at Safeco Field.

                    St. Louis at Milwaukee
It's been a troubling time for the defending champs and they showed no signs of snapping out of it yesterday as they lost badly to Milwaukee (12-2). Denver at San Antonio
Denver looked poised to make this a series when the Nuggets took Game One in San Antonio with Allen Iverson scoring 31 points. But since that time both the Nuggets and Iverson have faded. Since his Game One performance, Iverson is just 25-of-70 from the field and didn't score in the final 5:24 of Game Four as Denver watched a four-point lead evaporate. The only thing making Iverson's play look better has been the play of J.R. Smith, who led the team in three-pointers during the regular season, but is 0-for-12 in the playoffs and firmly in coach George Karl's doghouse. The Nuggets look like a team ready to collapse and the experienced Spurs look more than ready to take advantage and cover the Vegas line (-8 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has San Antonio favored by 11. Dunkel Pick: San Antonio (-8 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
