Braves' Hudson in mourning, but will start
Mon, Apr 30, 2007
Tim Hudson is the Atlanta Braves scheduled starter for today’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies but he may have other matters on his mind.
Hudson received two rounds of bad news Sunday morning after learning his grandmother and former teammate had died. His grandmother, Vera Mickle, died early Sunday after a long battle with cancer.
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock was a teammate of Hudson’s at the University of Auburn. Hancock died in a car accident yesterday.
“I don’t know what to say,” Hudson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It’s like being punched in the gut. It’s such a shock right now, I don’t know what to say.”
Hudson and Hancock won a College World Series together at Auburn in 1997. The two stayed in contact after college and spent time together in the offseason.
“He’ll be missed, that’s for sure,” Hudson told reporters.
Hudson is 3-0 with a 1.22 ERA in five starts this season.
