    Six-Pack for Tuesday

Our four consecutive home runs edition.........

-- Before Boston fans get too excited, keep in mind that the pitcher who allowed four straight homers Sunday, Chase Wright, had three starts above Class A before Sunday nite.

-- Only other pitcher to ever allow four consecutive homers was an Angel pitcher named Paul Foytack, whose career record was 86-87-- he was at end of his career in 1963.

--- Foytack allowed his consecutive homers to:
Woodie Held, a .240 career hitter with 179 career HRs
Pedro Ramos, a pitcher who hit .155 with 15 HRs
Tito Francona, a .272 career hitters with 125 homers; yes, he is also Terry Francona's dad, and
Larry Brown, whose homer off Foytack was the first of 47 in a notoriously light-hitting (.233 BA) career.

-- On other hand, Wright's homers came against:
Manny Ramirez, .313 career hitter, 472+ homers.
JD Drew, .288 career hitter, 164+ career homers
Mike Lowell, .274 career hitter, 166+ homers, and
Jason Varitek, .269 career hitter, 133+ career homers.

-- Foytack was pitching in the nightcap of a twinbill on two days' rest, after throwing seven strong innings in last start.

-- Wright was returned to the minors after his performance.

Tuesday's list of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) According to Forbes Magazine, the Florida Marlins made a $43M profit last year, proving that baseball not only needs a salary cap, it needs a salary floor, to make sure owners take the money they make and re-invest at least some of it.

      12) Redskins have two picks in first five rounds of this week's NFL Draft, #6 and #143. They can take a long nap in between.

      11) Will the Raiders trade for Daunte Culpepper and draft WR Calvin Johnson? It could happen if Miami acquires QB Trent Green before Saturday.

      10) As good a player as Tracy McGrady is, he has never been past the first round of NBA playoffs. He is halfway there now as Rockets own 2-0 lead over Utah, and look strong.

      9) Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth all hit 104 homers in one-run wins, the most ever; Willie Mays (94) is next.

      8) Quad Cities Open and New Orleans Open share record on PGA Tour, with 16 of their tourney champs being first-time winners on the pro tour.

      7) #125 on the PGA Money List is Mathias Gronberg, with a mere $208,644 in earnings. So far this season, and it is only April, 24 golfers have already earned $1M+.

      6) Vancouver Canucks won playoff series in seven, despite a scoring drought of 165:45 in the series. Has another team won a series without scoring for almost three full games?

      5) Alabama drew 92,000 for their spring football game, which is really hard to believe. Admission was free, but still............

      4) Sunday afternoon, the Padre-Colorado game took just 2:11 to play, Twins-Royals took 2:07, Giants-Arizona 1:56. Over in Boston, the three Bronx-Red Sox games took 3:18/3:26/3:34, resembling slowpitch softball more than baseball.

      3) Scumweasel agent Scott Boras did client Jeff Weaver no favor when Weaver signed a one-year contract with Seattle; he is 0-2, 15.75 in his first two starts with the Mariners. Next winter, St Louis will be only team still interested in him.

      2) Baseball season is three weeks old, and Bronx has had just two save opportunities, blowing both.

      1) Since winning the World Series in 2000, Bronx has spent a total of $978,129,386 in salaries, without winning another title. That $22,000 short of a billion dollars, just in salaries.

            Tuesday, April 24

Nets won Game 1 in Toronto, their fourth win in five tries vs the Raptors this season; Jersey held Toronto to 41.3% from floor, 7-19 from arc. Net nucleus has lot more experience than hosts, who face damn well-better-win scenario here, or else go back to New Jersey down 2-0, where they;ve already lost 102-92/101-86 this season. Big game here for the young Raptors.

Bulls beat Miami 46-33 on boards in Game 1, a 96-91 win, Bulls' eleventh win in last fourteen tries. Miami is 2-4 in last six games 0-10 vs spread in last ten, as Wade tries play through shoulder injury that needs surgery. Funny that Bulls beat Miami 108-66 Opening Night, but lost last regular season meeting 103-70.

Watch Lakers play when Brynat is on bench; ball is passed, players move, and good shots are taken. Bryant comes back in, the ball stops moving, fallaway 20-footers are the norm, and all semblance of team ball goes away. Bryant was 4-8 on treys in Game 1, 11-25 on 2's, only 5-7 from line. He needs to get to line more, but they don't call fouls on fadeaway jumpers.

#6 New Jersey Nets at #3 Toronto Raptors
              Game 2 - Tuesday, April 24th, 7 p.m. Eastern (NBATV)

Toronto's worst-case scenario came true in Game 1, trailing by 10 points at halftime and having to fight back late in the game. The Raptors led by 10 at the break in each of the previous two home meetings with New Jersey and simply must get off to a better start. If Chris Bosh can stay in the game (he picked up two quick fouls in Game 1), Toronto should be able to bounce back and head to New Jersey tied 1-1 in the series. EDGE: RAPTORS
New Jersey's experience played a key role in Saturday's Game 1 victory, as Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson both took advantage of a young Raptors team early on. Kidd had eight of his game-high 15 assists in the first quarter to set the tempo while Jefferson scored 11 of his game-high 28 points then as well. Both players were on New Jersey's Eastern Conference championship teams in 2002 and 2003 and know what playoff basketball is all about. BIG EDGE: NETS
Former Raptor Vince Carter continues to struggle shooting the ball in Toronto, making just 5-of-19 shots from the field in Game 1. Carter has now made only 14-of-51 shots (27 percent) in his last three games there. EDGE: RAPTORS
The Raptors have failed to cover their last five games going back to the regular season.
The Nets have won five straight both SU & ATS going back to the regular season.
UNDER is 11-3 in Toronto's last 14 vs. Atlantic Division opponents.
UNDER is 21-6 in the last 27 meetings, including 8-3 in the last 11 in Toronto.

              Head-to-Head Recaps
FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

New Jersey leads 1-0 SU & ATS
              UNDER 1-0

              4/21/07 - Game 1: New Jersey 96, TORONTO 91 (ATS winner: New Jersey +4.5 | UNDER 194)
              Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nets came out firing on all cylinders and took advantage of some first-half foul trouble by Toronto's Chris Bosh. Experience definitely looked to be the difference early on as New Jersey built a 51-41 halftime lead. T.J. Ford kept the Raptors in the game with 21 points and then backup Jose Calderon ignited a 17-5 run to open the fourth quarter and pull Toronto within 84-83. However, former Raptor Vince Carter overcame a poor 5-for-19 shooting day by making some key free throws down the stretch as the Nets held off the home team.

              REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Series tied 2-2 SU & ATS
              UNDER 3-1

              2/14/07 - TORONTO 120, New Jersey 109 (ATS winner: Toronto -9.5 | OVER 190)
              1/9/07 - NEW JERSEY 101, Toronto 86 (ATS winner: New Jersey -3.5 | UNDER 194.5)
              12/15/06 - TORONTO 90, New Jersey 78 (ATS winner: Toronto +2.5 | UNDER 193)
              11/1/06 - NEW JERSEY 102, Toronto 92 (ATS winner: New Jersey -7 | UNDER 202)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: This could very well be the best matchup in the first round since each team won two home games en route to splitting the season series. Both meetings in Toronto had players missing for each team, as Chris Bosh missed the first meeting there and Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd sat out the second. The key could very well be former Raptor Vince Carter, who is a free agent at the end of the year and would love nothing more than to stick it to his former team. However, Carter averaged just 14.5 points in Toronto this season on poor 28 percent shooting. Bosh gives the Raptors a serious advantage inside though and could have a coming-out party in his first playoffs similar to Amare Stoudemire a couple years ago.

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#4 Miami Heat at #5 Chicago Bulls
              Game 2 - Tuesday, April 24th, 8 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

Shaquille O'Neal got the Heat off to a hot start in Game 1, scoring 10 points in the first quarter. However, O'Neal was saddled with foul trouble througout the game and eventually fouled out with 3:19 left. He finished with 19 points and had some words for the refs after the game. "My intention was to come out and be myself, until Eddie Rush derailed me," O'Neal said. This was a familiar theme between the teams in last year's first-round series, with the Bulls getting most of the calls at home and then O'Neal becoming more of a force in Miami. SLIGHT EDGE: BULLS
Chicago guard Kirk Hinrich has just two points due to foul trouble as well, which gave rookie Thabo Sefolosha an opportunity to guard Miami star Dwyane Wade. Sefolosha did the job, limiting Wade to 3-of-10 shooting through three quarters. Look for the Bulls to put similar pressure on Wade in Game 2 with the combination of Hinrich and Sefolosha to wear him down. EDGE: BULLS
Despite foul trouble for both O'Neal and Wade, the Heat still hung in Game 1 and trailed 92-91 with 38 seconds remaining. The defending NBA champs would love nothing more than to steal Game 2 and head home with a chance to go up 3-1. BIG EDGE: HEAT
Dwyane Wade says he's playing hurt right now and is not at full strength while head coach Pat Riley wants Wade has to do a much better job on the defensive end of things after Chicago forward Luol Deng scored 33 points against him.

''I'm not the D-Wade I'm used to being right now,'' he said. "My quickness is not there. I'm trying to be smarter. I'm trying to use my mind more than my athleticism. I don't think [coaches and teammates] really know that as much as I do. It's frustrating. But I'm here to play.'' Riley challenged Wade to play better in Game 2. ''Regardless of the condition you're in, you're going to have to guard somebody,'' Riley said of Wade. "Now, it's all about stepping up and taking pride at both ends of the court. Hinrich, Deng and Gordon -- they have to be shut down." The Heat will have to make some defensive adjustments, and it will be interesting to see how Wade reacts to Riley's challenge. SLIGHT EDGE: HEAT
Chicago is 6-2-1 ATS in its last 9 games.
Underdog is 9-3-2 ATS in the last 14 meetings.
UNDER is 9-3 in Miami's last 12 road games.
UNDER is 8-2 in Chicago's last 10 vs. Southeast Division opponents.

              Head-to-Head Recaps
FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

              Chicago leads 1-0 SU
              OVER 1-0

              4/21/07 - Game 1: CHICAGO 96, Miami 91 (ATS winner: PUSH -5 | OVER 182.5)
              Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Heat got off to a strong start in Game 1 behind 10 first-quarter points from Shaquille O'Neal, who scored just nine the rest of the way as he battled foul trouble throughout. O'Neal and Dwyane Wade both headed to the bench just 3 1/2 minutes into the fourth quarter with five fouls apiece, but the Heat still rallied back to pull within 92-91 with 38 seconds left. That comeback came despite O'Neal fouling out, and Chicago's Ben Gordon nailed some late free throws to force the push.

              REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Chicago wins 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS)
              OVER/UNDER 2-2

              3/7/07 - MIAMI 103, Chicago 70 (ATS winner: Miami +1 | UNDER 184)
              1/27/07 - CHICAGO 100, Miami 97 (ATS winner: Miami +7 | OVER 191.5)
              12/27/06 - CHICAGO 109, Miami 103 (ATS winner: Chicago -5.5 | OVER 192.5)
              10/31/06 - Chicago 108, MIAMI 66 (ATS winner: Chicago +4.5 | UNDER 187)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Both games in Miami were blowouts, with Chicago spoiling the Heat's ring ceremony by handing a defending NBA champion its worst season-opening loss ever. Miami then returned the favor in the last meeting despite playing without Dwyane Wade. The two meetings in Chicago saw Ben Gordon score a combined 74 points and show just what a difference maker he can be. Gordon totaled just 14 points in the last meeting and needs to be a major factor offensively in order for the Bulls to have any shot at dethroning the champs. Meanwhile, Wade averages just 17.3 points per game lifetime vs. Chicago, and whether or not he can be as aggressive against Kirk Hinrich this time around will be the key to Miami's chances after his return from a serious shoulder injury.

              ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#7 Los Angeles Lakers at #2 Phoenix Suns
              Game 2 - Tuesday, April 24th, 10:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

The Suns got an outstanding effort from reserve guard Leandro Barbosa in Game 1, as he scored 26 points in nearly 35 minutes off the bench. Barbosa took most of James Jones' minutes and gave Phoenix another quick ball handler in addition to Steve Nash. The Lakers did a solid job defensively in the first half but had to run-and-gun most of the second because Barbosa pushed the tempo so much, eventually tiring them out. BIG EDGE: SUNS
The Lakers are 2-13 SU in their last 15 games when Kobe Bryant scores 40 points or less. Bryant totaled 28 points by halftime of Game 1 but tired in the second half, making just 1-of-10 shots in the fourth quarter to finish with 39. The Suns did an excellent job of switching defenders on him and will likely use that same effective strategy for the rest of the series. EDGE: SUNS
The Lakers have beaten just one team with a winning record since February 26th, and that was a Golden State team that had a losing record at the time. LA now faces the difficult task of beating the Suns four times in six games after losing seven of the last eight meetings. EDGE: SUNS
Phoenix head coach Mike D'Antoni made some disparaging comments about the Lakers prior to Game 1 and didn't back off them much in a pregame interview. D'Antoni criticized Lamar Odom's defense and questioned Bryant's decision-making late in games. LA's players seemed to take those comments to heart early on, especially Bryant. However, it can be argued that D'Antoni's comments about the Lakers were correct since everything he said seemed to have an impact on their collapse down the stretch. EDGE: SUNS
LA is 6-16-1 ATS in its last 23 games.
UNDER is 9-3 in Phoenix's last 12 home games.
UNDER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings in Phoenix.

              4/22/07 - Game 1: PHOENIX 95, LA Lakers 87 (ATS winner: LA +10.5 | UNDER 211)
              Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Lakers built a 48-39 halftime lead behind 28 points from Kobe Bryant, who was just as cold in the second half as he was hot in the first. Bryant missed 11 of his last 12 shots, going 1-of-10 in the fourth quarter when they were outscored 21-10. The Suns also outscored LA 35-29 in the third to give the OVER a glimmer of hope, but that torrid pace ended abruptly with the poor shooting down the stretch.

              REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Phoenix wins 3-1 SU (Lakers 3-1 ATS)
              OVER/UNDER 2-2

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The Suns sent a message to the Lakers by winning the last three meetings after losing the season opener at LA, 114-106. That lone setback in the season series came during a 1-5 start for Phoenix, and Kobe Bryant did not even play in that game. Lamar Odom scored a game-high 34 points in the victory while Bryant averaged 27.3 points in the other three meetings on 26.3 shots per game. Bryant and the Lakers still seem to be haunted by their collapse in last year's first-round series against the Suns, when they blew a 3-1 lead and saw him score just 1 point in the second half of Phoenix's Game 7 rout.

I'm sure glad to see the "Six Pack" back! PM and I were starting to wonder if the author of that and "List of 13" was ever going to resume that little treasure.

Good morning, Spearit! Best of luck today!

                        San Diego at Arizona
This matchup is literally one for the ages as 43-year-old David Wells and Randy Johnson hook up to top the age record for lefthanders facing each other set earlier this year by Tom Glavine and Jamie Moyer. Johnson is making his first start of the season after undergoing back surgery in October, while Wells is coming off his best start of the season against the D-Backs on Wednesday as he allowed just two runs and three hits over seven innings. That weak offensive trend for Arizona carried over to the weekend series with the Giants as the D-Backs were swept while totaling only three runs in three games. Overall Arizona has now dropped six of its last seven. San Diego looks like a good underdog pick (+155) according to Dunkel, which has the Padres favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: San Diego (+155). Here are all of today's games.

                          Streaking Pitchers

                          Tuesday, April 24

                          HOT

Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays) - Halladay will face the Red Sox for the second time in a week and hopes for a better decision tonight. On Thursday, Boston scored three runs off the Blue Jays bullpen in the final two innings to win 5-3. The Blue Jays ace is 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA so far this season and will be motivated to win this time out. Halladay is 8-7 with a 4.51 ERA in 28 career games against the Red Sox including a 3-4 record at Fenway Park.

Javier Vazquez (Chicago White Sox) - If history tells us anything, Vazquez is a good bet against the Kansas City Royals. The White Sox right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.88 ERA in six career starts versus the last-place Royals. So far this season Vazquez is 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA. A lot of that success can be given to the White Sox hitters who are providing plenty of run support. Chicago is 3-0 and have scored 15 runs when Vazquez has started this season.

Rich Hill (Chicago Cubs) - One thing the slumping Chicago Cubs have going for them this season is emerging star Rich Hill. The left-hander is making an early claim to be the new ace of the staff with a 3-0 record and an amazing 0.41 ERA. Hill has a scoreless streak of 16 innings going and already has earned one win over the Brewers this season. With the bullpen blowing leads it will be important for the Cubs to get as many innings out of Hill as they can.

                          COLD

Jarrod Washburn (Seattle Mariners) - Washburn is off to a slow start and hopes the Mariners recent success against Texas will benefit him today. The left-hander has a 0-2 record with a 4.42 ERA this year and will be making his first road start of 2007, where he went a 2-9 with a 5.88 ERA last season. Seattle has recorded half its wins this year versus the Rangers and if the offense keeps rolling Washburn could avoid losing his third straight start.

Paul Maholm (Pittsburgh Pirates) - Having a positive attitude can go a long way to having a successful season on the mound. Despite an 0-2 start to the year, Maholm is not disappointed in his outings so far and feels his mechanics are the best they have been in a long time. The Pirates lefty will try again for his first win of 2007 tonight against the Houston Astros. Maholm is 1-2 with a 6.53 ERA in four career starts versus Houston.

Mark Redman (Atlanta Braves) - Redman is still looking for his first win of the season and he could be on the verge of getting it based on his last performance. Even though he is 0-3 with a 8.62 ERA, the Braves recently got a glimpse of the pitcher they thought they signed in March. The veteran left-hander lowered his ERA from 12.96 and pitched past the sixth inning for the first time this season last week against the Cubs.

                            Tuesday, April 24

Detroit Tigers at Los Angeles Angels (+101, 8)

So far in this young season, there is no team that has a larger discrepancy between home and away records than the Los Angeles Angels. Heading into Monday’s game, Los Angeles is 8-2 in the cozy confines of Angels Stadium and a league-worst 1-7 on the road.

“We’ve done a 180-degree turnaround twice this season,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the Los Angeles Times. “We had the first week here, the road trip, then back here. Hopefully it will stabilize and we’ll get the pressure we need to put on teams.”

Last season the Angels’ home (45-36) and away (44-37) records were nearly identical.

“We're seeing the signs we need,” Scioscia said. “I just hope we don’t have another drought like we had on the road.”

                            Pick: Angels +101

San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks (-143, 9)

Randy Johnson is scheduled to make his first major league start today since being reacquired by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 43-year-old left-hander had back surgery in October and began the season on the disabled list. After Thursday's rehab start in the minors, Arizona manager Bob Melvin was confident Johnson was ready.

“I think he felt good about the last several innings, where he picked up the intensity in his own mind, and got after it a little harder,” Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin told the East Valley Tribune. “Sometimes you can feel your way through those rehab assignments and it’s not the same feel as a big league game. I expect the intensity to increase that much more in a big league game.”

Hopefully, for the sake of Arizona backers, Johnson’s intensity will rub off on his teammates. The Diamondbacks have lost six of their last seven games after starting the year 7-2. Johnson should have a good season now that he’s back in a comfortable setting.

The five-time Cy Young winner had a 103-44 record in six seasons in Arizona before joining the New York Yankees.

                            Pick: Diamondbacks -143

Oakland Athletics at Baltimore Orioles (-107, 9 ½)

Today’s game was supposed to be Rich Harden’s start but the Canadian flamethrower will sit another game to rest his arm. In his place, 23-year-old Dallas Braden will make his major-league debut. Braden pitched six scoreless innings for the Oakland Athletics' Triple-A team on Thursday.

"Oh, man, I am so pumped,” Braden told the San Francisco Chronicle after learning of his promotion. “My manager (Tony DeFrancesco) was shaking my hand today and he said, ‘We’ve got to get you out of here, you’re going to the big leagues.’ "

Braden, who is best known for his screwball, is pitching against a hot team today. The Baltimore Orioles are fresh off a series sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays and have won 10 of their last 13 games.

                            Pick: Orioles -107
