Monday's list of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

    13) Normally, trip to Tampa Bay would be welcome, since the God-awful bullpen of Devil Rays awaits, but powers-that-be of Bronx franchise also reside in Tampa. Joe Torre probably isn't looking forward to the trip, to see/hear those nitwits.

    12) Bronx was swept in Fenway for first time since 1990.

    11) How do you spend $200M on a roster and wind up with Wil Nieves and Josh Phelps as your catchers, not to mention Doug Mientkiewicz at first base? Colter Bean?

    10) Next Sunday will be amazing, as Bronx-Boston isn't the Sunday night ESPN game; imagine that? Its Cubs-Cardinals.

    9) As of Friday night's games, 14 of the 30 major league clubs had team batting averages under .250. Not very good.

    8) Mets are 5-0 vs lefty starters, scoring 8.6 runs per game vs southpaw starters.

    7) Milwaukee is also 5-0 vs lefty starters, but only 6-7 against righthanded starters. NL Central is wide open race.

    6) Tom Glavine's 206 sacrifice bunts are most in MLB history.

    5) Barry Zito's last two starts: 13.1 IP, no runs allowed, a pair of wins over division foes. Zito threw 126 pitches in Saturday win vs Arizona. Giants are hot club right now.

    4) NHL screwed up, having Detroit, Calgary play consecutive days, with Calgary games being played at altitude of 3,000 ft. I am writing this after first OT, the teams look exhausted. For most part, NHL series are played on alternate days, but this was an exception that has hurt the quality of play.

    3) The last time a #1 seed lost Game 1 of NBA playoffs was four years ago, when both Pistons and Spurs lost.

    2) The gunner Kobe Bryant was 4-8 on 3's Sunday, 11-25 on 2's, only 5-7 from line, as his team now lies three games away from another first round extinction. Last year, Suns only won when they made 38-40% from arc; with Stoudemire playing this year, they are much more diverse and much better.

    1) Monday night is Game 7 of NHL playoff series, with Dallas visiting Vancouver, which hasn't scored since Game 4. There is no higher drama than Game 7 of a Stanley Cup series, so it promises to be great TV, better than Bronx-Devil Rays.

Dwight Howard was just 3-11 from foul line in 100-92 loss in the first game on this floor; he'll need to convert more if Magic has shot at road win. Orlando shot 58% from floor, but turned ball over 21 times, ten more than Pistons, who made 23-31 at charity stripe. Magic only tried five treys (2-5).

Kirilenko played just 15:51 in Game 1, scoring one hoop; unless he can more, this will be short series for Jazz, who covered only four of last 22 games overall. Both sides shot under 40% in the first game; Utah led 42-33 at half, but made just 9-17 from line, while Rockets were 21-26 from line, 9-27 from arc.

Vancouver hasn't scored since the third period of Game 4 win in Dallas; they're 0-20 on power play in last five series games, but they still have home ice, which means last line change. Last five series games stayed under; total of 11 goals were scored- under is 9-1 in series games this season. In last two third periods, the Canucks had total of just 11 shots on goal, not good.

#8 Orlando Magic at #1 Detroit Pistons
                Game 2 - Monday, April 23rd, 7 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

                Head-to-Head Recaps
FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

Detroit leads 1-0 SU (Orlando 1-0 ATS)
                OVER 1-0

                4/21/07 - Game 1: DETROIT 100, Orlando 92 (ATS winner: Orlando +9.5 | OVER 180.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Much like their last regular-season meeting, the Pistons got off to a strong start, but that wasn't enough to cover the spread down the stretch. Detroit led by 12 at the end of the third quarter and 14 at the end of the third but saw the Magic win the fourth quarter 25-19 to earn the ATS victory. Each team also had two quarters of 25 points or more to push the total OVER.

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

                Detroit wins 4-0 SU & 3-0-1 ATS
                OVER/UNDER 2-2

                4/11/07 - DETROIT 104, Orlando 99 (ATS winner: PUSH -5 | OVER 184.5)
                2/23/07 - Detroit 94, ORLANDO 89 (ATS winner: Det -2 | UNDER 185)
                2/21/07 - DETROIT 110, Orlando 88 (ATS winner: Det -7.5 | OVER 182)
                12/8/06 - Detroit 87, ORLANDO 83 (ATS winner: Det +4 | UNDER 186.5)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The Pistons simply took care of business en route to sweeping the season series. Even the last meeting wasn't close until the fourth quarter, as Detroit built a 13-point lead at the end of the first. Detroit is simply too experienced and matches up well against the Magic at every position except center, with Dwight Howard averaging 21 points and 13.5 rebounds in the four meetings. Still, Howard's best game (26 points, 15 rebounds) came in the most lopsided of the four, so watch for the Pistons to take control of this playoff series early.

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#4 Utah Jazz at #5 Houston Rockets
                Game 2 - Monday, April 23rd, 9:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

                Head-to-Head Recaps

Houston leads 1-0 SU & ATS
                UNDER 1-0

                4/21/07 - Game 1: HOUSTON 84, Utah 75 (ATS winner: Houston -6.5 | UNDER 188.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The story of this game was Houston star Tracy McGrady, who scored just 1 point by halftime but erupted for 16 in the third quarter to turn a 9-point halftime deficit into a 6-point lead going into the fourth quarter. The Rockets outscored Utah 26-11 in the third after trailing 42-33 at the break. A couple missed 3-pointers by the Jazz in the final seconds kept them from covering. Each team also failed to score more than 20 points in two of the four quarters to force the total UNDER.

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Utah wins 3-1 SU & ATS
                OVER/UNDER 2-2

                4/18/07 - UTAH 101, Houston 91 (ATS winner: Utah -8.5 | UNDER 192.5)
                4/1/07 - Utah 86, HOUSTON 83 (ATS winner: Utah +5.5 | UNDER 189.5)
                1/5/07 - HOUSTON 100, Utah 86 (ATS winner: Houston -3 | OVER 184.5)
                11/1/06 - UTAH 107, Houston 97 (ATS winner: Utah +1.5 | OVER 182.5)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: You can throw out the last meeting between the teams on the last day of the regular season, as Houston stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady sat out to rest for the playoffs. Yao also missed Houston's lone win in the season series with a broken leg, so Utah won both meetings when the teams were at full strength. Utah has a slightly better home record, so the home-court edge could be the key in this series for the Rockets even though the Jazz have proven they can win at Houston. This should be one of the most competitve matchups of the first round.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oakland at Baltimore: Pick Orioles -115

Billy Beane took another gamble, but so far it doesn’t look like it’s going to pay off. Last year the Oakland Athletics general manager signed Frank Thomas for peanuts and the Big Hurt tallied 39 home runs and 114 RBIs.

Thomas signed in the offseason with the Toronto Blue Jays, so Beane decided to take a chance on Mike Piazza to fill the designated hitter role.

The season is still young but the early statistics aren’t promising. The 38-year-old is batting .246 with only four RBIs and he is currently in a 1-for-22 hitting slump.

“It’s been frustrating,” Piazza told the San Francisco Chronicle after going 0-6 in Friday’s 16-4 win over the Texas Rangers. “But the biggest thing is that the guys have been picking me up and we’re winning.”

Oakland failed to score on Saturday marking the 10th time the team has scored three or fewer runs in a game this season.

Houston at Philadelphia: Pick Astros +111

Normally the Houston Astros’ offense would only go as far as Lance Berkman could carry it. Not this year.

Berkman has batted in only six runs and is hitting just above the Mendoza Line at .204, but the Astros are winning. The offense has been fairly productive and the team has won nine of its last 12 games heading into Sunday’s game.

The difference has been the addition of Carlos Lee to the batter order. Opposing teams used to favor pitching around Berkman and take their chances with the next batter. Now Lee is finally giving Berkman the protection in the lineup. Lee has five homers and 19 RBIs in only 16 games for the Astros.

Cleveland at Minnesota: Pick Indians +115

Travis Hafner is having some kind of April for the Cleveland Indians, but it's been leadoff hitter Grady Sizemore setting the table for him.

The center fielder is cutting down his strikeouts and walking more often. In 13 games he has 13 walks and a .460 on-base percentage.

“I don’t feel like I’m doing anything different,” Sizemore, who had 153 strikeouts last season, told Cleveland Plain Dealer. “If they’re not going to throw strikes, why swing? I just want to get on base anyway I can and try to create something.”
