Getting this play out early. I'll bump it back up tomorrow and Thursday.
3 STAR: NORTHERN ILLINOIS (+7.5) OVER Maryland
I really like Northern Illinois at home getting more than a touchdown in this game. There are many negative factors going against Maryland in this match up. Northern Illinois, a contender for the MAC championship this season, has the talent to pull off an upset here. They return good talent at two key positions with Michael Turner at tailback and Josh Haldi at quarterback. Turner is the sparkplug of the Huskies offense, and he is the nation's leading returning rusher from last season when he gained 1,915 yards on the ground. Quarterback Josh Haldi has a year of experience under his belt now, and he threw for 2027 yards and 15 touchdowns as a freshmen. Maryland enters this game banged up, they have injuries to quarterback Scott McBrien (groin) who is probable for this game, and also to star tailback Bruce Perry (ankle) who is doubtful for this game.
Brigham Field at Huskie Stadium will be rocking for this game with ACC power Maryland. A crowd of almost 30,000 will rock the stands. This game is a huge event for Northern Illinois, they are giving away thunderstix to the crowd, having a fireworks display, and we can't forget its also corn boil night! Seriously, there is always something special about a home underdog on a Thursday night, and the Huskies will be playing with some extra emotion in this game. Northern Illinois was devastated in June when budding star offensive tackle Shea Fitzgerald was one of several young people killed in a Chicago porch collapse. The Northern Illinois players are rallying around his memory for extra motivation to succeed this season and will be fired up to play a big name school like Maryland.
The Terrapins are also in a "look ahead" spot here, they play Florida State in their next game, and they are only 2-4 against the spread the week before they play the Seminoles. When it came to covering the spread last season, there was no team better than the Huskies, Northern Illinois had the best record against the spread of any them in the nation that had more than one lined game last season, posting a 9-2 record against the number! Take the points with the live dog here!
Good luck,
John
