Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............

    13) Joe Torre got outmanaged badly as Bronx collapsed late in 7-6 loss at Fenway Friday; how is he left with tying run on base and Kevin Thompson the batter?

    12) He has to let Giambi play first base, and stop running for him in 7th inning; the guy makes $17M a year, and he isn't so bad at first base. Hell, he played in Oakland, where foul area is plentiful, so any missed throws are killers. There weren'ta lot of missed throws. Giambi is competent at first base.

    11) Huge boost for Boston, getting save out of the Japanese lefty, with Papelbon unavailable for action.

    10) Mets are bully team, crushing lousy pitchers, but Hudson kicked their butts Friday. Still think they'll jog in NL East.

    9) Poor Charlie Manuel; he managed good game, had 1-0 lead vs Cincinnati team that had one hit thru eight innings, then a two-out homer by Hatteberg ties game, and Reds win it in the 10th. Days are getting shorter in Philly for Charlie.......

    8) BJ ryan's injury has already caught to Blue Jays, who lost another game in team's finall at-bat. As much as they've spent to become better, they're not good enough.

    7) Texas acquiring Brandon McCarthy for John Danks is total disaster for Rangers; McCarthy allowed 12 runs in last couple starts, lasting total of three innings, while Danks has been the better pitcher, and White Sox got more than Danks in deal.

    6) Thats what happens when you hire 20-something kids out of the Ivy League to run your franchise. Brilliant!!! By way of review, McCarthy is a flyball pitcher acquired by a team that plays home games in a small ballpark. I went to a state school, but I knew that McCarthy in a small park was bad news.

    5) Colorado has taken to getting groundball pitchers, and it has worked for them, partially negating the thin air of Rocky Mountains. Scouts should focus on guys who can pitch and hit spots, not just guys who can throw it through a wall.

    4) Craig Biggio hit his first grandslam in 13 years, breaking up a 2-2 ninth inning tie, as Houston won again, moving on top of NL Central by beating the Brewers. Chad Qualls got 27th out for surging Astros; signing of Clemens is getting closer.

    3) It might just be me, but Lou Piniella doesn't look like he is having an awful lot of fun on the north side of Chicago.

    2) Buffalo and San Jose advanced in Stanley Cup playoffs; Sabres started season 10-0; could this be the year they win a championship for the first time?

    1) Best story of night is Joe Saunders, the only Virginia Tech alum in majors, tossing six shutout innings vs Seattle, as the Halos snapped out of slump with an 8-4 win.

#6 New Jersey Nets at #3 Toronto Raptors
        Game 1 - Saturday, April 21st, 12:30 p.m. Eastern (ESPN)

Experts feel the experience of the Nets could eventually be the difference in the series, but not necessarily right away. New Jersey veterans Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson have made it to the NBA Finals together twice and know the playoffs are a grind. They won't get rattled in situations like this on the road or frustrated by a poor performance. SLIGHT EDGE: NETS
Toronto's Chris Bosh only played in three of the four meetings with the Nets during the regular season and did not dominate when he did play. Bosh averaged just 17 points and 7 rebounds per game vs. New Jersey. EDGE: NETS
The Raptors have one of the top home-court advantages in the NBA. They were 30-11 SU at home during the regular season and 24-16-1 ATS. The fans also got on former Toronto star Vince Carter, who made just 9-of-32 shots in two games there. BIG EDGE: RAPTORS
New Jersey is 4-0 SU & ATS in its last 4 games.
UNDER is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in Toronto.
UNDER is 20-6 in the last 26 meetings overall.

        REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Series tied 2-2 SU & ATS
        UNDER 3-1

        2/14/07 - TORONTO 120, New Jersey 109 (ATS winner: Toronto -9.5 | OVER 190)
        1/9/07 - NEW JERSEY 101, Toronto 86 (ATS winner: New Jersey -3.5 | UNDER 194.5)
        12/15/06 - TORONTO 90, New Jersey 78 (ATS winner: Toronto +2.5 | UNDER 193)
        11/1/06 - NEW JERSEY 102, Toronto 92 (ATS winner: New Jersey -7 | UNDER 202)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: This could very well be the best matchup in the first round since each team won two home games en route to splitting the season series. Both meetings in Toronto had players missing for each team, as Chris Bosh missed the first meeting there and Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd sat out the second. The key could very well be former Raptor Vince Carter, who is a free agent at the end of the year and would love nothing more than to stick it to his former team. However, Carter averaged just 14.5 points in Toronto this season on poor 28 percent shooting. Bosh gives the Raptors a serious advantage inside though and could have a coming-out party in his first playoffs similar to Amare Stoudemire a couple years ago.

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#4 Miami Heat at #5 Chicago Bulls
        Game 1 - Saturday, April 21st, 3 p.m. Eastern (ABC)

The Bulls signed center Ben Wallace in the offseason for this series, whether it happened in the first round or any point down the road. Wallace was seen as the final piece of the puzzle following last year's 4-2 series loss to the Heat, but he has only played strong in spurts this season. In fact, he virtually disappeared in the season finale at New Jersey, playing just 25 minutes in a game his team needed to win in order to avoid playing Miami in the first round. Wallace's consistent play against Heat center Shaquille O'Neal will be crucial, and experts doubt he will be able to win this matchup most of the time. SLIGHT EDGE: HEAT
Dwyane Wade's health will be an obvious concern for the Heat, as he played just five games down the stretch of the regular season in an effort to get ready for the playoffs. Wade averaged 14.6 points in those games but did show his ability to take over a game in a 100-96 win over Indiana on April 13th. He scored 14 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, including two dunks after he said his knee was too sore to elevate. Insiders believe he still has that ability to dominate but remain concerned about whether or not he can perform at a high level for an entire series at this point of his recovery. SLIGHT EDGE: BULLS
Never underestimate a champion, especially one that peaked without its best player. Losing Wade for 23 games caused the Heat to come together and forced others to step up their play. Miami went 16-7 during that stretch and witnessed a re-birth of Shaq as a dominant player as well. This team is very dangerous after pacing itself most of the season and did everything needed to prepare for another run. BIG EDGE: HEAT
Underdog is 9-3-1 ATS in the last 13 meetings between the teams.
Miami is 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings in Chicago.
Chicago is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
UNDER is 8-1 in Chicago's last 9 games vs. Southeast Division opponents.
UNDER is 9-2 in Miami's last 11 road games.

        REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Chicago wins 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS)
        OVER/UNDER 2-2

        3/7/07 - MIAMI 103, Chicago 70 (ATS winner: Miami +1 | UNDER 184)
        1/27/07 - CHICAGO 100, Miami 97 (ATS winner: Miami +7 | OVER 191.5)
        12/27/06 - CHICAGO 109, Miami 103 (ATS winner: Chicago -5.5 | OVER 192.5)
        10/31/06 - Chicago 108, MIAMI 66 (ATS winner: Chicago +4.5 | UNDER 187)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Both games in Miami were blowouts, with Chicago spoiling the Heat's ring ceremony by handing a defending NBA champion its worst season-opening loss ever. Miami then returned the favor in the last meeting despite playing without Dwyane Wade. The two meetings in Chicago saw Ben Gordon score a combined 74 points and show just what a difference maker he can be. Gordon totaled just 14 points in the last meeting and needs to be a major factor offensively in order for the Bulls to have any shot at dethroning the champs. Meanwhile, Wade averages just 17.3 points per game lifetime vs. Chicago, and whether or not he can be as aggressive against Kirk Hinrich this time around will be the key to Miami's chances after his return from a serious shoulder injury.

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#8 Orlando Magic at #1 Detroit Pistons
        Game 1 - Saturday, April 21st, 7 p.m. Eastern (ESPN)

Former Piston Darko Milicic suffered a sprained ankle in Tuesday's win at Washington, which could hurt Orlando's chances of scoring a victory big time. It's not that Milicic is such a force inside, but his pairing with Dwight Howard allows Howard to be more effective. The size of the duo is about the only advantage the Magic could have in this series, which is why it would be a severe blow. BIG EDGE: PISTONS
Insiders believe Detroit guard Chauncey Billups could be in for a big series here. Billups is in the final year of his contract and could boost his stock significantly after pacing himself during the regular season. He has a huge size advantage over Orlando's Jameer Nelson and should be able to score at will. BIG EDGE: PISTONS
Road team is 11-2-2 ATS in the last 15 meetings between the teams.
Detroit is 16-5-2 ATS in its last 23 games.
OVER is 6-2 in Detroit's last 8 home games.
OVER is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings.

        REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

        Detroit wins 4-0 SU & 3-0-1 ATS
        OVER/UNDER 2-2

        4/11/07 - DETROIT 104, Orlando 99 (ATS winner: PUSH -5 | OVER 184.5)
        2/23/07 - Detroit 94, ORLANDO 89 (ATS winner: Det -2 | UNDER 185)
        2/21/07 - DETROIT 110, Orlando 88 (ATS winner: Det -7.5 | OVER 182)
        12/8/06 - Detroit 87, ORLANDO 83 (ATS winner: Det +4 | UNDER 186.5)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The Pistons simply took care of business en route to sweeping the season series. Even the last meeting wasn't close until the fourth quarter, as Detroit built a 13-point lead at the end of the first. Detroit is simply too experienced and matches up well against the Magic at every position except center, with Dwight Howard averaging 21 points and 13.5 rebounds in the four meetings. Still, Howard's best game (26 points, 15 rebounds) came in the most lopsided of the four, so watch for the Pistons to take control of this playoff series early.

        -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#5 Utah Jazz at #4 Houston Rockets
        Game 1 - Saturday, April 21st, 9:30 p.m. Eastern (ESPN)

The Rockets had one of the worst home spread records at 15-25-1 despite going 28-13 SU. In fact, Houston has failed to cover its last five there. SLIGHT EDGE: JAZZ
Insiders are curious to see how this Houston team plays with a break considering the Rockets are just 4-14 ATS on two days of rest this season. SLIGHT EDGE: JAZZ
The Rockets have the two big superstars in this series with swingman Tracy McGrady and center Yao Ming. McGrady has been criticized in the past for failing to step up in the playoffs and will have an excellent opportunity to take his game to the next level here against the Jazz. He scored 44 points in the team's one win over Utah during the regular season without Yao and can take the game over at any time. BIG EDGE: ROCKETS
Utah is 2-9 ATS in its last 11 road games.
Houston is 0-5 ATS in its last 5 games & 1-8 ATS in its last 9.
OVER is 7-1 in Utah's last 8 games.

        REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Utah wins 3-1 SU & ATS
        OVER/UNDER 2-2

        4/18/07 - UTAH 101, Houston 91 (ATS winner: Utah -8.5 | UNDER 192.5)
        4/1/07 - Utah 86, HOUSTON 83 (ATS winner: Utah +5.5 | UNDER 189.5)
        1/5/07 - HOUSTON 100, Utah 86 (ATS winner: Houston -3 | OVER 184.5)
        11/1/06 - UTAH 107, Houston 97 (ATS winner: Utah +1.5 | OVER 182.5)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: You can throw out the last meeting between the teams on the last day of the regular season, as Houston stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady sat out to rest for the playoffs. Yao also missed Houston's lone win in the season series with a broken leg, so Utah won both meetings when the teams were at full strength. Utah has a slightly better home record, so the home-court edge could be the key in this series for the Rockets even though the Jazz have proven they can win at Houston. This should be one of the most competitve matchups of the first round.

                        SATURDAY, APRIL 21

                        New Jersey at Toronto
Vince Carter's return to Toronto finds the Raptors a much better team than when he departed in December of 2004. Toronto won the Atlantic Division for the first time in team history and made it back to the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Sam Mitchell's team also did a good job of protecting the home court with a 30-11 record straight up and 24-16-1 record against the spread, including covering in both home wins over the Nets in the regular season. The Raptors look like a good pick to cover the line (-4 1/2) in Game One according to Dunkel, which has Toronto favored by 8. Dunkel Pick: Toronto (-4 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                          Washington at Florida
The Marlins pounded Washington in the first two games of the season en route to the Nats' 1-8 start that had experts comparing them to the '62 Mets. But since that time Washington has won five of its last eight, while Florida has dropped eight of nine, including six straight. The Nats will go with rookie pitcher Matt Chico, who like the team has settled down after a rocky start and has allowed just two earned runs over his last two starts. He gave up only one run on four hits over five innings in a 5-1 win over Atlanta on Monday. With the Nationals competitive right now, they look like a good underdog pick (+180) against the struggling Marlins according to Dunkel, which has Washington favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+180). Here are all of today's games.
