Ldawg. I'm not in San Diego. I'm in Walnut Creek in the SF Bay Area. I'm an A's fan, hate the Giants and everything about them, yet I played the Giants tonight. I learned a long time ago, never bet with your heart.

Dawg. If you ever come up this way, let me know. Monterey and Carmel are about two and a half hours from here.

            Mechwarrior 2
            Pat Miller

My first memorable experience with BattleTech/MechWarrior wasn't actually MechWarrior 2 - it was at a Virtual World center in Walnut Creek, years ago when people were still trying to sell Virtual Reality. Virtual World was kind of between an arcade and an Internet cafe. The main attraction consisted of about 16 networked pods, each built to feel like a BattleMech cockpit (or some kind of racing ship; Virtual World offered 2 games, but the only one I ever played was BattleTech). Every 15 minutes or so a new game would start, and you'd be escorted off to your pod to do battle with your friends, other customers, and occasionally a few bored employees. After a game was over, you'd get a printout of the battle that detailed each time a person lost a part of their 'Mech or was destroyed altogether and respawned, then you'd wander back into the main lounge area, get a drink, and wait for the next round. (The default 'Mech was a variant of the Thor (Summoner) that traded the PPC for some lasers. Yes, I'm a MechWarrior geek.)

MechWarrior 2 for Macintosh can't quite replicate the experience of sitting in a pitch black combat pod, but it comes damn close, and in some ways it flat out beats it. It takes place during a protracted conflict between Clan Jade Falcon (awww yeah...) and Clan Wolf. You can choose to play for either side - each side has about 10 different missions, although the 'Mechs are the same. As you progress through the game you'll advance in rank and will be allowed to command your own Star (trio) of Clan 'Mechs. If that's too much work, you can just opt for the Instant Action mode - pick up to three 'Mechs on your side and up to three opponents and a battleground and duke it out. The mission play is where MW2 shines, though; tonnage limitations and multiple objectives make each mission worth playing and replaying.

I guess the place is gone now .... or did it Morph into something else ?

Yeah, I remember the place. It was right on Main Street and cost about 8 dollars for a half hour game which you played as part of a group. I think they were the only place in the SF Bay Area with what was then new technology. I don't remember why they closed but they were only there for a couple of years.
