Friday's List of 13: Tell your statistics to shut up..........

    13) The Versus network is doing a great job of covering the NHL playoffs; it is tough network to find, or remember, but if you like hockey, it is well worth the effort. They use feed of the games from Canada, and just show game action, instead of clutter you'd rather not see.

    12) What genius in the NHL offices decided that Detroit and Calgary, roughly 1,900 miles apart, should play Games 5-6 on consecutive days? Calgary is north of freakin' Idaho; Detroit is in the eastern time zone. Buy a map, fellas.

    11) "There are times when silence has the loudest voice."

The comment of the analyst on Dallas-Vancouver broadcast after Stars scored in OT to win at Vancouver, keeping series alive, and heading back to Texas for Game 6 Saturday night.

Canucks lost the game because of penalty for too many men on ice; since I was a Bruins' fan in 1979, I won't talk about too many men on the ice penalties. Win was second win in ten playoff OT games for Dallas goalie Turco.

    10) The average starting pitcher uses 3.75 pitches per batter, and 5.35 pitches per out. Tampa Bay's supposed ace, Scott Kazmir, uses 4.12 pitches per batter and 6.01 pitches per out, which is why he'll never win with the Rays, because their pen is so inept, they can't finish games for him, especially if they have to get more outs than usual to do so. .

    9) Jeremy Bonderman is 0-0, 2.17 in his first four starts, with Tigers scoring 10 runs, and losing three of the four games in extra innings. Under is 3-0-1 in those four games.

    8) Mets are 6-0 in games that go over the total, 4-4 in unders.

    7) Mets scored 30 runs in John Maine's first three starts, but they still have the worst hats in the big leagues.

    6) New Minnesota Gopher football coach Tim Brewster is on a crusade to visit all 390 Minnesota high schools that have a football team. His goal? To keep all in-state talent in the state.

    5) Phillies left 131 runners on base in their first 13 games, the most of any team since the 1970 Detroit Tigers.

    4) White Sox are 3-14 in their last 17 games vs CC Sabathia.

    3) If Arizona Diamondbacks make the playoffs, who is going to want to go up against Webb-Hernandez-Johnson in short series? They'd have to be a favorite to win National League.

    2) The last Big 11 team to reach the College World Series was Michigan, way back in 1984.

    1) None of this matters, but I do think it is true; if the Virginia Tech massacre had happened last week instead of this week, Don Imus wouldn't have been fired. Timing is everything.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia at Cincinnati: Pick Reds -126

Today would normally be Brett Myers' scheduled start but the Philadelphia Phillies have decided to designate him as the setup man in hopes of improving the bullpen.

“I still believe Brett is our No. 1 starter,” Jon Lieber, the man taking Myers' rotation spot, told the Philadelphia Daily News. “I think he deserved that role. If people look at a couple of bad starts from him for being in the situation he’s in, they’re obviously wrong.”

Pitching hasn’t been the team’s only problem. The Phillies have stranded 131 baserunners in the first 13 games. And now first baseman Ryan Howard is day to day with a sprained ligament.

Cleveland at Tampa Bay: Pick Indians -184

We have another reason for you to fade the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. There's a flu bug going through the team.

“We did play like we had the flu today,” Rays manager Joe Maddon told the St. Petersburg Times after Wednesday’s 6-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. “We did not play well.”

Tampa Bay fans may feel sick themselves if C.C. Sabathia is on his game. The Indians ace has looked great so far this season.

Houston at Milwaukee: Pick Brewers -167

Milwaukee Brewers' starters have pitched at least five innings in all 14 games this year, but manager Ned Yost wants more from the rotation.

“Five-plus ain’t cutting it right now,” he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “We need our starters going deeper in games. If your starters are only going five, it puts pressure on your bullpen to be perfect every single day.

“We’re making a lot of mistakes over the middle of the plate. These guys are too good a group of pitchers to do that.”

Brewers ace Ben Sheets should be able to correct that problem today against the Houston Astros.

                      Streaking Pitchers

                      Friday, April 20

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Hot pitchers

Braden Looper (St. Louis Cardinals) - The move by Tony LaRussa to put Looper into the rotation this season has paid dividends for Cardinals backers. Looper has posted a sparkling 2.37 ERA while winning two of his first three starts. The former Marlins closer is also 2-0 in day games and sporting a 1.38 ERA away from the new Busch Stadium. The Cardinals travel to Chicago this afternoon to take on the Cubs as +120 underdogs.

Kyle Lohse (Cincinnati Reds) - There's a ton of value in the Reds tonight with Lohse taking the bump. Lohse has yet to record a loss this season while putting up a stellar 2.53 ERA while striking out nearly a batter an inning in three outings. Oddsmakers have responded, pricing Cincinnati as -125 favorites tonight at home against the Philadelphia Phillies.

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - After Johan Santana, Sabathia is the best lefty in the majors right now. Just look at the numbers: 3-0 record, 2.14 ERA and 19 strikeouts in three starts. With these statistics, sportsbooks had no choice but to list the Indians as sizable -179 road favorites tonight against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

                      Cold pitchers

Miguel Batista (Seattle Mariners) - The way Batista is throwing, the 36-year-old could be at the end of the line. Batista carries an 8.74 ERA in April. To make matters worse for Seattle bettors is Batista's 1.59 WHIP, which has kept runners on the basepaths. Oddsmakers have responded to Batista's struggles, listing the Mariners as +123 underdogs tonight against the Los Angeles Angels.

Odalis Perez (Kansas City Royals) - How the Royals are only +105 home underdogs against the Minnesota Twins tonight is a little baffling. Perez is without a win so far this season, no doubt due to his unsightly 9.26 ERA and .456 OBP against. Part of Perez's trouble is his inability to strike batters out - he's only wrung up six batters so far in April.

Ben Sheets (Milwaukee Brewers) - Sheets had a great start on opening day and it's been all downhill from there. While Sheets is keeping runners off the bags with a .280 OBP against, he's still managed to put up a 5.85 ERA so far in 2007. It might be the case that Sheets is simply allowing big hits at the wrong times, but for baseball bettors, that's more than enough to stay away from the Brewers' ace at the moment. The Brew Crew are -167 favorites tonight against the Houston Astros.

                        St. Louis at Chicago Cubs
While the defending champion Cardinals have had their struggles (their 6-9 start is the worst for a reigning champion since the 1998 Marlins started out 1-11), Braden Looper has been one of the pleasant surprises. Since moving from the bullpen into the rotation, Looper has allowed just five runs in 19 innings (2.37 ERA), while winning two of his first three decisions. Against a Cub team that has won just two of seven at home (and three of 10 overall), Looper and the Cardinals look like a good underdog pick (+140) according to Dunkel, which has St. Louis favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: St. Louis (+140). Here are all of today's games.

                            San Jose at Nashville
Last year the Sharks had a 3-1 series lead in the Western Conference quarterfinals and were able to close out the Predators at home. They have the same opportunity tonight after taking both games in San Jose with a physical style of play that held Nashville to just three goals in the two games. The Sharks have already shown they can win at Nashville Arena (Game 1, 5-4 in overtime), which should help them tonight and helps make San Jose a good underdog pick according to Dunkel, which has the Sharks favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: San Jose (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
