    Six-Pack for Wednesday

-- Nationals wore Virginia Tech hats Tuesday, in honor of the slain students. Classy move.

-- Pirates, Phillies, Astros, Cardinals are a combined 5-20 at home so far this season. So much for home field advantage.

-- Padre bullpen tossed nine scoreless innings in 14-inning win at Wrigley Tuesday; they have a 1.83 ERA this season.

-- Mets had Freddy Garcia switch gloves before game even started; he went from red glove to smaller black one. Over on NESN, Matsuzaka was using a red glove, so it couldn't have been the color that was the problem.

-- If the NBA went public with their suspension of referee Joey Crawford, he's in a lot of trouble.

-- Watching Detroit-Calgary playoff game, I'm guessing at least half the fans have red Flames jerseys on. Not t-shirts, but actual game jerseys, which are expensive.

      Wednesday, April 18

Tonight is last night of very long NBA regular season; I don't recommend investing in these games, where teams are either on way home for summer, or preparing for playoffs, but here is the info on Wednesday's card, in case you really want to play.

76ers are 9-4 vs spread in last thirteen games, 4-2 SU in last six; five of Philly's last six games went over the total- they lost at home to Raptors 94-85 twelve days ago. Toronto getting ready for playoffs; they're 9-2 in last eleven games.

Orlando won five of its last six games; they won last meeting vs Heat 97-83 in Miami March 18 (+7). Heat is 2-3 SU in last five games, 0-8 vs spread in last eight games-- fourteen of their last nineteen games stayed under the total.

Cavaliers won in Philly last night, their third win in row (by 18,6, 34 points); five of their last six games stayed under total. With playoffs looming, would expect to see lot of Cleveland subs in this game. Bucks are 2-9 vs spread in last 11 as underdog.

Knicks are 3-15 since they extended Isiah Thomas' contract, yet more proof that there are stupid rich people; they lost last five games, by 8,29,14,2,9 points. Charlotte won seven of its last ten games; they beat Knicks 104-87 in last meeting.

Detroit beat Raptors in hoem finale last night; they're just 4-3 in last seven games, as they prepare for playoffs. Celts have been preparing for lottery since Thanksgiving, but last three games have all been decided by a basket- they're 1-7 in last eight.

Chicago is hot, winning 10 of last 12 games, including a 105-74 destruction of Nets 12 days ago; their last five games all stayed under the total. Jersey won three in row, seven of their last nine games, with six of those nine staying under total.

Denver won nine of last ten games as they get ready for their postseason; last five Nugget games all went over total. Spurs beat Denver 95-80 in last meeting Feb 20 (-7.5). San Antonio lost last two games, scoring 88.5 ppg.

Memphis misses playoffs for first time in four years; they're 8-5 vs spread in last thirteen games, winning last two, vs Denver, Spur teams getting ready for playoffs-- Under is 4-1 in their last five games, but Wolves' last eight games all went over the total. Minnesota is 6-23-2 vs spread in last 31 games.

Indiana lost last three games, by 4,4,16 points; with Pacers out of playoff hunt, no reason for O'Neal to keep testing bad leg-- eight of their last nine games went over total. Wizards limping into playoffs; they lost eight of last nine games.

Utah won last game by 37 points, just their third cover in last 20 games; their last seven games went over total, but one of other two was 83-83 win at Houston April 1 (+5.5) last series meeting. Rockets won their last five games.

Mavericks got whacked in Oakland last night, as they ready for playoffs; they beat Seattle 122-102 in last meeting, back when the regular season had their full attention. Sonics lost eight of their last nine games, as they play out string.

Warriors make playoffs with win here, or Clipper loss at home to Hornets; Golden State whacked Mavericks last night, their fourth win in row and eight in last nine games. Portland lost by 37 in last game, its fifth loss in last six games.

Lakers lost eight of last eleven games as they limp to playoffs; they beat Kings 126-103 in last meeting April 1 at Staples (-6.5). Sacramento is 5-16 in its last 21 games, with eight of its last 11 games going over the total.

Clippers need to beat Hornets and hope Warriors lose in order to make playoffs; Clips won in Phoenix last night, third win in last four games for LA. Hornets won six of last nine games and covered fourteen of their last twenty.

Rangers are killing Atlanta team that went in tank last night in a hideous 7-0 loss; Thrashers are 1-13 on power play in series, are one of only two teams to go down 3-0 (Minnesota won their Game 4 last night). Home side is 2-5 in season series this year, but hard to buck Ranger club that is flying in this series.

Lightning won last two games, both by 3-2 scores, after losing Game 1, 5-3; Tampa Bay held Devils to 0-4 on power play in last game, after they were 4-8 in Swamp. Six of seven games in this season series stayed under total, with Lightning 3-0 vs Jersey in one-goal games.

Buffalo outshot Islanders 17-2 in third period of Game 2, even with 3-2 lead, taking bad home ice edge; they're 5-2 against the Islanders this year, 2-1 in this building- all three games in this series landed on total of five. Islanders scored only one goal in third period in series; they're 1-11 on power play.

San Jose outshot Nashville 41-20 in Game 3 win, putting Sharks up 2-1 in series. In all three games, San Jose has outshot Preds in first period (14-6/12-5/11-7) by total of 37-18. Nashville has scored just six goals in three games in Shark Tank this season, after scoring 15 in four series games at home.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers: Pick Tigers -191

Jeremy Bonderman is the best pitcher in the majors not to post a victory this season. In three starts, the Tigers right-hander has a 2.57 ERA, 15 strikeouts and has walked only three in 21 innings.

Unfortunately, these impressive performances were overshadowed by the opposing teams' pitchers. Bonderman threw against Toronto Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay twice, and matched up against the Royals' Brandon Duckworth, who has a 1.59 ERA in his first two starts.

Detroit has gone 7-3 in its last 10 games against Kansas City when Bonderman takes the bump. He has a 4.23 ERA versus the Royals during this span.

New York Mets at Florida Marlins: Pick Florida -110

The New York Mets were anxious to get to Florida after spending the season's start in some miserable weather. But running into Florida’s Dontrelle Willis might put a dark cloud over the Mets' southern road trip.

Willis is off on the right foot this year, getting over last season’s poor start. The animated left-hander is 3-0 with a 3.32 ERA, including 17 strikeouts and only four walked batters. Last year, Willis didn’t post his third win until June 7, taking 13 starts to reach that mark.

This year Willis has the hot bats of the Marlins behind him. Florida is second in the majors in both runs per game (5.58) and batting average (.292), and is first in OPS with a .842 percentage.

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics: Pick Athletics -105

The Angels’ lack of run production has caught up with them. They have totaled only five runs in their last four games, losing three to the Boston Red Sox and one to the Cleveland Indians.

The Angels are having trouble turning hits into runs, and those runs into wins. Against the A’s last week, L.A. averaged just under three runs in four games and split wins in the series.

The Angels’ bats aren’t getting much help from the pitching staff. The team was outscored 29-5 during the four-game losing skid. The pitching staff has posted a 3.78 ERA over the first 13 games of the season.

St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants: Pick Cardinals +112

Not even a $346-million stadium can make the Cardinals feel at home. After putting up one of the best home records in the majors last season at Busch Stadium (49-31), St. Louis has started this year 1-6 at home.

Fortunately for Cards backers, the Cardinals are on the road facing the San Francisco Giants, who like their opponents, haven’t given hometown crowds much to cheer about.

The Giants are 1-5 at AT&T Park this season, hitting .244 at the plate with only 14 RBI and a 4.83 ERA at home. St. Louis is 5-1 on the road and is batting .257, knocking in 23 of its total 39 RBIs in opposing ballparks.

                        Streaking Pitchers

                        Wednesday, April 18

                        HOT

Dontrelle Willis (Florida Marlins) - D-Will has his eye on win No. 4 and he could become the first pitcher in the league to hit the mark after starting the season 3-0 for the third time in four seasons. Willis owns the New York Mets, compiling a career 11-2 record and 2.02 ERA in 16 starts against the club. He hasn't been lights out this season, but has pitched at least six innings each start, consistently putting his high-scoring Marlins teammates in positions to win. The Florida offense may blunt the under bet today however; the Marlins have an 8-5 over/under record this year and have hit the over in each of Willis's starts.

Felix Hernandez (Seattle Mariners) - The King shed some pounds in the offseason and has started the season on a tear for the M's. He has a chance today to put more polish on his crown after two shutout victories to start the year. He has pitched 17 innings in his two starts with 18 strikeouts. He's holding opposing batters to a .140 average. His last outing alone justifies today's -191 price after he outdueled phenom Daisuke Matsuzaka in a complete-game one-hitter at Fenway Park.

Scott Kazmir (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - If the momentum from his last start carries over, Kazmir could be as hot as they come. The Devil Rays' ace went head-to-head with Cy Young winner Johan Santana Friday and didn't miss a beat in a dominating 4-2 victory. His first two games were rather pedestrian, but the left-hander has decreased his walk rate in each start this season. If he's motivated by his competition on the mound, Baltimore Orioles lefty Erik Bedard should get Kazmir's juices flowing as a -126 home favorite this afternoon.

                        COLD

Aaron Harang (Cincinnati Reds) - Harang comes into today's start with half-decent numbers (2-0, 5.40 ERA), but after surrendering five runs in each of his last two starts he is clearly benefiting from some luck. He allowed nine hits and five runs in just four innings on April 13. The Reds offense is firing on all cylinders right now after some lineup tweaks, but Harang could compromise his team's -131 price against the Houston Astros.

David Wells (San Diego Padres) - Wells began the season in style but coughed up a goose egg in his last outing, a 9-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. He allowed five runs and eight hits in only 2 1/3 innings and raised his ERA to 7.00. The bullpen behind Wells has been impressive so far, but that's little comfort for prospective Padres backers against Arizona Diamondbacks righty Brandon Webb.

                          Baltimore at Tampa Bay
Scott Kazmir is coming off one of the best performances in his career after handing Johan Santana his first home loss since August of 2005. But the 23-year-old lefthander gets another tough assignment today against Baltimore's Erik Bedard. The Oriole lefthander has been especially tough against the D-Rays with a 7-3 record and 2.98 ERA in 14 career starts. Two of those wins have come in matchups with Kazmir. While the Orioles lost last night (6-4), they had won four straight prior to that and look like a decent underdog pick (+125) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Baltimore favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Baltimore (+125). Here are all of today's games.

                            Chicago at New Jersey
Both teams have something on the line with this one tonight. A win for the Bulls locks them into the second seed in the East, while a win for the Nets earns them the sixth seed. But of the two, the Bulls have been the hotter team, winning six of their last seven straight up and against the spread. In the last three contests (vs. Washington, Charlotte and New York) Chicago has been especially dominant, easily covering the spread while winning by an average margin of 27 points. The Bulls look like a good pick to continue the trend and cover the line (-2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Chicago favored straight up by 10 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Chicago (-2). Here are all of today's games.

The fact that Tampa Bay is finding ways to score on the usually impenetrable Martin Brodeur is not totally surprising given the fact that the Lightning are led by two 100-point scorers in Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis. But what is more surprising is the play of goalie Johan Holmqvist, who has rebounded from a shaky performance in Game One to lead the Lightning to a 2-games-to-1 lead. At home the surging Lightning look like a good underdog pick in this one according to Dunkel, which has Tampa Bay favored straight up by 1/2 a goal. Dunkel Pick: Tampa Bay (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
