-- Slow game Friday: Astros-Phillies, 3:36, 378 pitches for a nine-inning game. Good for the vendors.

-- Fast game Friday:: Tigers- Blue Jays, 2:14, 214 pitches, all in ten innings. Good night for the pitchers, bad for vendors.

-- Carlos Lee became fifth player to hit three homers in a game in Philly's new bandbox of a ballpark.

Weekend list of 13: Random thoughts on a windy day......

      13) If you like magazines and you want to learn about sports, you read The Sporting News, not Sports Illustrated.

      12) Billy Joel is here in Albany Tuesday; tickets for Row K in Section 101 are $80 a pop. Thats an expensive Tuesday night.

      11) College football honchos wisely changed clock rules back to what they were in 2005, which will increase amounts of the plays teams run by roughly 14 a game. Good for them.

      10) How does the DA in Durham keep his job? Seriously, he tried to ruin lives of three college kids and he gets to keep a high-paying job? Why doesn't Oprah put those three kids on her show and complain how they were falsely prosecuted?

      9) Carl Crawford hit inside-park homer Friday night, helping Devil Rays end Santana's long regular season home winning streak, a night after he committed the worst baserunning error I've ever seen by a big leaguer.

      8) Tampa was tied 2-2 in 9th Thursday; they had man on first, no one out, when Crawford lines double to rightfield corner, but he tries to stretch it to triple, not knowing that runner in front of him had stopped at third. Zobrist gets in rundown as Crawford stood at third, which was bad, but not as bad as.....

7).......Crawford trying to go back to second as Zobrist is put out between home and third. Crawford gets thrown out, and Rays have bases empty, two out after a double. Inning ends, first Minnesota batter in bottom of ninth homers, game over.

      Whoops.

      6) NBC has hired the outrageous Don Cherry to work on the Stanley Cup final telecasts; the former Bruins' coach, who is (or at least, he used to be) an advocate of fighting in hockey, could be just what this country needs for NHL telecasts.

      5) Last year in major leagues, only ten games were played all season where starting temperature was under 45 degrees. So far, through Thursday's games, there were 32 such games in this month alone.

      4) Nationals are the first major league team ever that failed to score a single run in first three innings of any of their first 10 games. That new ballpark they're building down there better be something, to draw fans in to watch this terrible team.

      3) When Rangers won in Atlanta Thursday, they snapped a 10-game losing streak in playoff series openers.

      2) If Jeremy Shockey and Plaxico Burress won't go to New Jersey for offseason workouts with Eli Manning, why doesn't Eli head to south Florida for workouts? In this day and age, QB and receivers need as much practice as possible.

      1) Can I apply for the Hawai'i coaching job? Is it too late?

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Washington Wizards (ABC | 1 PM ET)
The Bulls are still battling Cleveland for the #2 seed in the Eastern Conference and need to keep winning to hold onto their current standing since they won the tie-breaker advantage. BIG EDGE: BULLS
Washington is pretty much locked into the sixth spot, with New Jersey sitting two games behind. SLIGHT EDGE: BULLS
Chicago is 25-9 ATS in its last 34 Sunday games.
Washington is 10-4 ATS in its last 14 Sunday games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in Chicago's last 8 games against Southeast Division opponents.

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)
If Friday's home loss to Utah was any indication, the Mavs will continue to rest their players. Jason Terry, Jerry Stackhouse, Erick Dampier did not play while only Josh Howard played more than 30 minutes. BIG EDGE: SPURS
The Spurs have won six straight and 12 of 13, going 9-4 ATS in those games. They still have an outside chance at getting the #2 seed in the Western Conference from Phoenix since they own the tie-breaker. EDGE: SPURS
The road team is 10-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
Dallas is 2-7 ATS in its last 9 games overall.
The UNDER is 10-1-1 in the last 12 games for Dallas against Southwest Division opponents.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Golden State Warriors (3:30 PM ET)
The Warriors are 13-5 SU since March 5th, averaging 110.4 points per game. They have been even better in the last seven, going 6-1 while averaging 117.4 points. BIG EDGE: WARRIORS
Golden State is tied for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with the Clippers, sitting just a half game behind the Lakers for the seventh spot. EDGE: WARRIORS
Golden State is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 games.
The OVER is 9-1 in Golden State's last 10 games.
The OVER is 17-8-1 in Minnesota's last 26 road games.

New Jersey Nets at Indiana Pacers (3:30 PM ET)
The Pacers suffered a devastating 100-96 loss at Miami on Friday night that may have ended their playoff hopes. They are two games behind Orlando and may miss the postseason for the first time in 10 years. SLIGHT EDGE: NETS
New Jersey has clinched a playoff berth but is still trying to catch Washington for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference. EDGE: NETS
Indiana is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 Sunday games.
The OVER is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings.
The OVER is 17-8 in Indiana's last 25 games against Atlantic Division opponents.

Sacramento Kings at Los Angeles Clippers (3:30 PM ET)
The Clippers are tied with Golden State for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference and sit just half a game behind the Lakers for the seventh spot. EDGE: CLIPPERS
The Kings have dropped 15 of their last 19 games and will miss the playoffs for the first time in nine years. EDGE: CLIPPERS
The Clippers are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games as favorites.
The Clippers are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games.
The road team is 13-4 ATS in the last 17 meetings.

Seattle SuperSonics at Los Angeles Lakers (9:30 PM ET)
The Lakers are 1-12 SU in the last 13 games when Kobe Bryant scores 40 points or less. They have also lost the last two games he has scored 50 points or more. EDGE: SONICS
LA must win this game because the Clippers and Warriors also both play inferior opponents and can take advantage of a Lakers loss for the second time in three days by gaining another full game in the standings. EDGE: LAKERS
The Lakers are 5-16-1 ATS in their last 22 home games.
The OVER is 24-9 in LA's last 33 home games.
The OVER is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Marlins at Atlanta Braves (1:05 PM ET)
Florida starter Anibal Sanchez has enjoyed great success against Atlanta in two starts, posting a 1-1 record with a 1.80 ERA. He's walked just one batter in 15 innings of work against the Braves. EDGE: MARLINS
Braves starter Tim Hudson is a magical 4-0 with a 2.00 ERA against Florida in seven career starts. The 31-year-old right-hander has allowed just one run and five hits in 15 innings this year. BIG EDGE: BRAVES

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians (1:05 PM ET)
Cleveland broke out in a big way against Jose Contreras picking a up a 12-5 victory. Contreras made it through just one innings - allowing seven earned runs on eight hits. BIG EDGE: INDIANS & OVER
Indians ace C.C. Sabathis is off to a fantastic 2-0 start, with one of those victories coming against Contreras and the White Sox. The left-hander is 13-3 with a 3.68 ERA in 21 career starts against the White Sox. BIG EDGE: INDIANS

Los Angeles Angels at Boston Red Sox (1:05 PM ET)
During the offseason, many MLB insiders wondered if Josh Beckett could rebound from his worst season as a professional, when he posted a 5.01 ERA and gave up an MLB-high 36 home runs. Beckett has answered the call with a 2-0 record and 1.50 ERA through his first two starts this year. BIG EDGE: RED SOX
Beckett had a difficult time pitching at Fenway Park, posting a 4.84 ERA and giving up 12 home runs in 109.2 innnings pitched in 2006. EDGE: ANGELS

San Francisco Giants at Pittsburgh Pirates (1:35 PM ET)
San Francisco starter Matt Cain has allowed just four runs in two starts this season, but doesn't have a win to show for his efforts due to the Giants offense scoring just four runs. EDGE: UNDER
Cain has just one career start against the Pirates, picking up a no-decision, allowing three runs and seven hits over four innings. EDGE: PIRATES
Pittsburgh right-hander Ian Snell pitched seven shutout innings against the Giants last year, allowing just three hits while striking out five. EDGE: PIRATES

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers (ESPN | 8:05 PM ET)
San Diego starter Chris Young was absolutely dominant on the road last year, going a perfect 5-0 with a 2.41 ERA in 15 starts. BIG EDGE: PADRES
The Dodgers will paying tribute to Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson on Sunday as will the rest of the Majors, with all of the players wearing #42 in honor of him. Insiders expect an electric atmosphere at Dodger Stadium on Sunday night. EDGE: DODGERS
Los Angeles starter Randy Wolf is 4-2 in his career against San Diego despite posting a 5.79 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: DODGERS & OVER
Wolf has struggled in the first month of the season in his career, going 10-14 with a 4.58 ERA, but improves dramatically in May - with a 14-7 record and 3.25 ERA. EDGE: PADRES

                Sunday, April 15

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Nationals at New York Mets: Mets -1 ½, -130

The NL afternoon action starts off at Shea Stadium with perhaps the league’s worst team visiting its best.

The Nationals have a nice prospect in lefty Matt Chico, who’ll face the Mets on Sunday, but if he were on a team with any depth in the pitching staff, Chico would still be honing his skills in the minors.

As it stands, he’s learning on the fly with spotty results so far – he allowed 10 runs in his two starts and didn’t pitch five full innings in either one. That’s putting an excessive burden on an already overworked bullpen.

Mets starter John Maine faced the Nationals three times in the second half last year and New York won all three games as a heavy favorite, twice delivering on the runline.

San Francisco Giants at Pittsburgh Pirates: Giants -105

Matt Cain faces Ian Snell in a battle of potential aces. Both have good to great stuff and have already showed it off in each of their two starts.

The difference on Sunday afternoon at PNC Park is the lineups they’ll each face.

Pittsburgh remains a poor hitting club against right-handed pitching, especially with left-handed Adam LaRoche striking out every second time at the plate and unable to get on track.

The Giants had been struggling mightily at the plate, but Barry Bonds’ pair of homers on Friday night woke up the entire lineup.

"It was a great day for Barry," manager Bruce Bochy told reporters after the game. "We're trying to get this offense going, and he really made that happen."

Texas Rangers at Seattle Mariners: Rangers -115

Right-handed starter Brandon McCarthy came to Texas in the offseason with a bit of pressure on him to eat up innings in the middle of the rotation. The pressure on McCarthy, who starts Sunday, was alleviated a little when the Rangers activated closer Eric Gagne from the DL Friday.

Gagne immediately went to work and recorded a save in Texas’ 5-2 win. The game worked out exactly like every Rangers fan had dared to hope in the offseason and Akinori Otsuka made things easier when he happily conceded the closer role to play Gagne’s setup man.

"For the team, this is great," Otsuka told the Dallas Morning News. "My role may change, but I'm going to do everything exactly the same as I did when I was closing. I'm excited to see what I can achieve in this role."

Horacio Ramirez finally makes his first AL start for Seattle after being scheduled to do so earlier this month.

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers: Padres -120

The Dodgers chased David Wells early in Friday’s 9-1 series-opening win over the Padres but San Diego managed to finish the game without tiring any of its elite relievers.

That bodes well for the Padres, especially on Sunday when they have an edge with Chris Young starting against L.A.’s Randy Wolf.

San Diego made the postseason last year largely thanks to its 13-5 record against the Dodgers. Already down a game after Friday, the Padres will do their level best to match that record in 2007 and they have the pitching staff to do it.

                            Anaheim at Minnesota
The Ducks did a good job of dictating the pace and limiting Minnesota's scoring chances in taking the first two game of the series. The Wild have struggled all season with the power play on the road and their performance at The Pond was no different as they went 0-for-10 with the man advantage, plus a short-handed goal given up Friday night. While Minnesota should benefit from returning home, the aggressive forechecking and defense of the Ducks are likely to continue to frustrate the Wild and give them a good chance at stealing Game 3 according to Dunkel, which has Anaheim favored straight up by 1/2 a goal. Dunkel Pick: Anaheim (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                              Chicago at Washington
The Bulls need a win today to stay ahead of Cleveland as they pursue the No. 2 seed in the East. Chicago has the best record in the conference since the All-Star break (19-7) and has won five of its last six against the spread with the only loss coming against a hot Toronto team. The Wizards finally did get a win against the lowly Hawks on Friday, but injuries to Caron Butler and Gilbert Arenas have clearly taken a toll as Washington had dropped six straight prior to the Atlanta game. Chicago looks like a good pick to cover the Vegas line (-5 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Bulls favored by 10 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Chicago (-5 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
