  • Addictions you may not be aware of!

Since one of our brethern is in rehab- Chato- I have also willed away my desire to gamble for the time being. I have won some dramatic games over the last few evenings and am now more aware than ever about how addicted we are to not only gambling but to the internet. (try watching a basketball game point by point and minute by minute on espn.com)

I always say- this is nearing the playoffs and this is happening and this good pitcher is on the mound- I can't stop now!
I asked Chato to give up calling plays so that he could concentrate on his addiction to Coke. I so honor that request myself.

In reality- I been wanting to quit gambling as well. Two Ton Tony, Love Doc and others have done it - why not me!

Well, its not just gambling that I am addicted to. See, I love to write- never knew how much till I came to BC. Oh, no- there is a much bigger psychojogical dependence--- the internet.

Lets check on what this is-----and then I will return!
    ---------------------------------------------
Aboujaoude, clinical assistant professor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences and director of Stanford’s Impulse Control Disorders Clinic, said that a growing number of Internet users are starting to visit their doctors for help with unhealthy attachments to cyberspace. He said these patients’ strong drive to compulsively use the Internet to check e-mail, make blog entries or visit Web sites or chat rooms, is not unlike what sufferers of substance abuse or impulse-control disorders experience: a repetitive, intrusive and irresistible urge to perform an act that may be pleasurable in the moment but that can lead to significant problems on the personal and professional levels.

According to preliminary research, the typical affected individual is a single, college-educated, white male in his 30s, who spends approximately 30 hours a week on non-essential computer use. While some may hear this profile and assume that a person’s Internet “addiction” might actually be an extreme fondness for pornography, Aboujaoude stressed that pornography sites are just one part of the problem.

“Not surprisingly, online pornography and online gambling, have received the most attention—but users are as likely to use other sites, including chat rooms, shopping venues and special-interest Web sites,” he said.

Although studies show that more than 160 million Americans are regular Internet users, little research has been conducted on problematic Internet use. A 1999 Center for Internet Studies survey of 18,000 Internet users, however, did find that 5.7 percent of the sample met suggested criteria for “compulsive” Internet use. And a 2002 study in the journal CyberPsychology & Behavior found that 60 percent of companies surveyed had disciplined, and more than 30 percent had terminated, employees for inappropriate Internet use.

“The issue is starting to be recognized as a legitimate object of clinical attention, as well as an economic problem, given that a great deal of non-essential Internet use takes place at work,” said Aboujaoude. But he added Internet use is a distinct disorder or merely an expression of other psychopathologies, such as depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder.

In the Stanford study—which Aboujaoude said is the first large-scale, random-sample epidemiological one ever done—the researchers conducted a nationwide household survey and interviewed 2,513 adults. Because no generally accepted screening instrument exists for problematic Internet use, the researchers developed their questions by extrapolating from other compulsive and addictive conditions.

The researchers found that 68.9 percent were regular Internet users, which is consistent with previous studies, and that:

13.7 percent (more than one out of eight respondents) found it hard to stay away from the Internet for several days at a time
12.4 percent stayed online longer than intended very often or often
12.3 percent had seen a need to cut back on Internet use at some point
8.7 percent attempted to conceal non-essential Internet use from family, friends and employers
8.2 percent used the Internet as a way to escape problems or relieve negative mood
5.9 percent felt their relationships suffered as a result of excessive Internet use
Aboujaoude said he found most concerning the numbers of people who hid their nonessential Internet use or used the Internet to escape a negative mood, much in the same way that alcoholics, sexual and drug users might. “In a sense, they’re using the Internet to ‘self-medicate,’” he said.
    ------------------------------------------

Alrighty, now I am fine and enjoy capping
but structuring bets have always been my downfall. I grew up at the dog track as my father and uncle were Vets and I love to see the puppies run. My Uncle would be the one to check the dogs out. Nice inside info if I was into it that sort of thing.
Anyway this gambling nature would turn back up again about 4 years ago, on the golf course and I totally was hooked.
I would lose 10,000 twice in one month and almost lost a good friend over a debate of what I played. I was wrong and everything is cool now.
As a physician who is semi-retired from the government- I have the resources and the time to make plays and gamble.
Where my bets were 1500 at max- they were parlayed to get the money back as quick as I could. Lately, I try to make it fun and keep my bets in the 10-200 range. But the life I am leading is in an unrealistic world and I have a commitment to reality with my patients.

Since we all have our addictions- I truly hope noone is in denial- because the pain and suffering such as what Chato and others on the site have had to go through was Hell and the only redemption is to balance your life with physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual expression. Best Bet! Good Luck All- Spear

Great read, thank you so much for sharing.

I only made a couple of wagers on the NC2A tourney, i dont bet NBA and have zero interest in MLB wagering.

Last year was the least amount wagered in the last 15 years, i too am following in your footsteps as i have decided that wagering is not for me. I still will do fantasy stuff and brackets but everyday gambling no matter the season is over.

I quit drinking recently, which was a big step for me. ( I love Rum), but it was doing more harm than good. Gambling to me was like drinking, never was any good with just a little.

God bless you Spearit, i have always admired your cool head and logic. I hope you still drop by when time permits

    Your buddy

        spearit-

it started last summer and football season is when i knew that i was quitting....It just did not interest me anymore (except a Wayne GOY).....I think between November and February i only made 3 bets (2-1) and i was much happier....Then after the super bowl i withdrew all my money (just got it 2 days ago from 1 book)....It was something i did not think about....I did not go cold turkey.....My way is probably the least used way....It was always a hobby for me.....About 10 years ago i was betting $500 a game, but since then i had not bet big money consistently....Every great once in a while $1000 (but only on GOY's).....the bets were gradually tapering off to 25-100.....I was never like some i have heard about who need to see scores or watch games....(in fact i rarely watch full games)....I had gambled since 1986 when i was a senior in college and had success......the first 15 years it was all football and later all sports....For some reason i found records of 12 years of bets....and i was only up like 3K for that time (better than behind).....but i thought it must break out to like .03 cents per hour.......It made me laugh.....This just added to the boredom i had with sports....The reason i started was because i loved sports (football) and the reason i think i stopped is that i just stopped respecting athletes and wanted nothing to do with them effecting my life......My quitting was that simple......Probably different from most....I too like to post and the breadth of topics on here and makes me laugh how on unique occassions i can get fired up (since i am relatively unexcitable in real life).....

good luck with your decision.....whatever you decide can be done

Just look under Chato in the search or in the members and you can locate him. He is a fine member who has been supportive of others now undergoing treatment for a cocaine addiction. He was man enuff to come forward and the support is for him as well as others who have not come forward or have in the past. My hope is that - folks who have experienced any type of addiction - is to first understand that you have it, deal with it in your own manner or seek help!
The purpose is to bring knowledge and awareness to those on site because many live in denial and it will consume them.

Wayne- Please redirect this under another forum- sorry!

I also want to mention that it is not the intention to call out addictive folks as some would rather hit the snooze button than open their eyes. It is the intention that we are as a site for gambling intentions- an addictive bunch. Obsessive -compulsive maybe! Psychologically dependent on the internet maybe! Drugs, alcohol, opposite sex, same sex, any sex, any way to jump into hyperspace from a reality based living.

Thanx guys and now I have gone to last year - Coffee with Love Doc!
Yes, folks the internet... Alot of you people, including myself at 1 point in time, live and die by bettorschat. When, i wasn't working i would be on here the entire night, yapping it up with you guys and protecting this forum day in and day out. That was my life!! Sitting in front of a computer protecting it from people who would come in and scam this site. Pretty much, after the wayne incident, it woke me and said, wow, there is much more to life than the interent. I was even putting my family aside so i could be on this forum. There has been a few more people which you have noticed who have been gone also which i talk to here and there who's life has changed for the better after not being on all the time. By all means i'm not saying to Leave this forum... But, sometimes you need to give yourself a break. Alot of you have good hearts and mean well, but look at yourself in the mirror. Put yourself into your girlfriend's or wife's shoes and they see thier husband/boyfriend always sitting on the computer. Spark, you know i think the best about ya, but go ahead and ask your wife this question? "Hey hun", "Would you like it more if i spent less time on the computer and more time with you cuddling or holding hands watching tv or maybe going out" Tell me what her response would be... (And this goes out to the rest of you also) Now, i know being a mod is tough and you have duties...LOL..well, i really dont know because im not one but, i believe you do spend ALOT of time on here.. Go out and enjoy life... Your young "at heart" that is..haha.

Ok now, i'm pretty much done with my speech and you can take it any way you want... I had no intentions of hurting anyone on this site, i just want to make you realize that family and life is way more important than the internet. By all means i'm not asking people just to leave, but to give yourself a break and do things that you might not do on a normal night where your always on the computer.

                      In closing.....I'm The Lovedoc damnit!!!

There is nothing wrong with placing bets imo, as long as it does not ake away from other priorites.

Yes - You live in Las Vegas! It seems you may be more at risk of losing your self to shiny plays. Moderation and discipline will see anyone in this field through.

Some here, however, feed on the plays as if it was a kid in a candy store. Not trying to be a holy roller- just making people aware of what the internet is doing to all of our lives. }There are Pros and Cons about the internet- great place for socializing like on the phone but better. Great sites to visit and shop and see odd things and keep in touch with friends.

Yet, Some are in denial of how the internet is warping their sense of reality- others are lurking thru many sites and some have their lives in total control. As for gambling that is another addiction that you speak of- it has its on gratification thru hormones that make you feel good when you are doing and when not you are looking for another gambling high. No different than drugs or sex or alcohol. That is the purpose of this thread!
