    Six-Pack for Thursday

Knee jerk reactions after seeing NFL schedule

-- Ron Rivera was Bears' defensive coordinator, got let go when he tried to become a head coach. Rivera is now inside linebackers coach for Chargers, so he'll see his old team in Week One, when Chicago comes to Qualcomm.

-- Tennessee @ New Orleans in Week 3 Monday nighter; Vince Young, Reggie Bush. Good stuff.

-- Jets get nine home games in '07, since they play Giants, so only seven road trips for team that opens with archrival Patriots, then opposes Ravens in Week 2.

-- Like to see Lion-Raider game in Week 1; two doormats in game that will leave one of them 1-0 and optimistic.

-- Six division games in Week 1, including both parts of the Monday night twinbill: Bengals-Ravens, Cardinals-49ers.

-- Last regular season game is Herm Edwards' return to the Meadowlands to face the Jets, 8:15 on December 30. Pack the warm clothes, Herm.

Thursday's list of 13: Random thoughts on variety of things

      13) John Beilein had clause in his contract with West Virginia that paid him $500,000/year for every year left on his contract if he had been fired, but contract went both ways, saying that he had $500,000 a year buyout if he left early, which he did.

      12) Simple math says that Beilein now owes the fine folks in Morgantown $2.5M, and Michigan ain't paying the tab, while Beilein's lawyers, who didn't represent him when the deal was made, are trying to reduce the amount owed. Good luck.

      11) How could someone who is such a good coach do this, unless he didn't know the clause was in there (he signed the contract, though)? Even at today's salaries, $2.5M is a lot of coin for a college hoop coach to come up with.

      10) Citigroup is going to pay the Mets major money for rights to name the new stadium in Flushing after their company, but Citigroup just eliminated 17,000 jobs, leading one to think they might have better use for their money than a ballfield.

      9) Felix Hernandez has been totally dominant in his first two starts, allowing four hits, no runs in 17 innings.

      8) Chargers redesigned their uniforms a little; numbers look good, but wish they went with the light blue jerseys fulltime.

      7) Giants have been blanked three times in first nine games.

      6) Nationals have yet to lead during a game; the only game it won, they trailed until two-run single on last pitch of game.

      5) New Orleans Hornets won their last nine overtime games.

      4) Nebraska is expecting crowd of 70,000 for spring football game. Arizona State transfer Keller has yet to clinch top spot at QB, although it would be shocking if he didn't start in fall.

      3) They showed a graphic on Padre-Giant game about an old Cub-Padre game, when Greg Maddux bested Mark Grant, the Padres' color commentator, 1-0. The game was in 1988. Here we are, nineteen years later, and Maddux is still winning.

      2) Bitter loss for Orioles, who got a fine pitching performance from Adam Loewen, saw game go into extra innings 0-0, until Monroe's homer in 11th gave Detroit the win. Pitching poor clubs like Baltimore can't afford to lose games like that.

      1) Harvard hired Tommy Amaker as head coach, but if he can not win at Michigan, where he had vast resources, how can he win at Harvard, where hockey is bigger than hoop?

        NY Rangers at Atlanta
The last two Stanley Cup winners have come from the Southeast Division, which should give Atlanta something to shoot for. But the Rangers don't look to be a pushover in this series as they've gone 16-6-6 since the beginning of February. Much of that success is due to the hot goaltending of Henrik Lundqvist, who finished his sophomore season with a 2.34 GAA and 917 save percentage. The Rangers look like a good underdog pick in this one according to Dunkel, which has New York favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: NY Rangers (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

              Thursday, April 12

Home side won all four Calgary-Detroit games this season, with Flames winning 4-1/2-1 at Saddledome, losing 3-2/7-4 in Detroit. Calgary lost last four games in season, allowing 17 goals. Red Wings won three of last four games; nine of their last eleven games stayed under.

Atlanta won last three games vs Rangers, 5-4ot/3-1/2-1ot, after losing first meeting 5-2 this season; road team won three of the four games. Thrashers won four of last five games; under is 7-0 in their last seven games. Rangers won eight of their last eleven games to make the playoffs.

New Jersey fired its coach despite being #2 seed in East, which is, at best, strange; they lost three of four vs Lightning this yr, losing 3-2/4-1 at home vs Tampa (games in Tampa were 2-0 NJ, 3-1 TB). last five Devil games stayed under total. Tampa Bay is 5-7 in last dozen games, 1-3 in last four on road.

Sabres won three of four vs Islanders this season, winning 3-1/ 6-4 at home, splitting on Island (3-0/3-5). Buffalo won nine of its last thirteen games; they started season 10-0, coasted to the #1 seed in East. Islanders needed to win last game in shootout just to make playoffs; it was their fourth win in row, so they're hot.

                        Thursday, April 12

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle at Boston: Pick Red Sox -160

Tim Wakefield was his usual dazzling self in his first start this season, but the Red Sox couldn’t score a single run for him, and Boston lost 2-0 to Texas. Wakefield pitched six innings of three-hit ball, walking two and striking out four. He allowed two runs but only one was earned.

Wakefield also sparkled the last time he faced Seattle. He allowed three runs, two earned, in nine innings in Boston on April 15 last year. He also struck out six and walked zero.

The Red Sox's struggling bats are also happy to be back at Fenway Park. Boston scored 14 runs in their home opener Tuesday. Boston’s batters will be up against Jarrod Washburn.

Detroit at Toronto: Pick Blue Jays -120

Left-hander Mike Maroth has been the dirty little secret among what is an otherwise quality group of Tigers starters. Things got so bad at the end of last year that he was demoted to the bullpen. He finished 2006 with a 4.19 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.

Those numbers are actually lower than his career averages of 4.80 and 1.40.

Maroth won his first start of the season against Kansas City but his performance was typically shaky. He allowed four runs and six hits in five innings, yet Detroit managed to win 6-5.

Maroth faces Tomo Ohka and a Blue Jays team that loves to hit at home. Toronto had an MLB-best .861 OBP at the Rogers Centre last year.

Washington at Atlanta: Pick Braves -300

Yes, the line is high, but a pitcher like John Smoltz simply doesn’t lose to a team like the Nationals at home. The Nationals, on the other hand, don’t beat anyone anywhere.

Smoltz has been solid in his first two starts this season, going 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA. His starts have earned 2.13 units.

Meanwhile, Jason Bergmann comes into the game looking for his first win for Washington since 2005. He's appeared in 45 games for the Nationals, including eight starts, and is 2-3 lifetime with a 5.93 ERA.

Tampa Bay at Minnesota: Pick Twins -165

Minnesota's Carlos Silva has allowed no more than a run in five of his last seven starts. He was great in his first game of the season April 7 against the White Sox, but the Twins couldn’t score and Silva took the loss. The 27-year-old right-hander allowed one run and five hits in five innings.

Minnesota is also up against a Tampa Bay pitching staff that can turn an ordinary hitter into Wade Boggs. Opponents are hitting .335 against the Devil Rays, and their hurlers now carry a 7.35 ERA.

Casey Fossum is pitching for Tampa Bay on Thursday. His ERA is 17.18 after one game.

                          LA Angels at Cleveland
The Angels snapped a mini two-game skid yesterday behind a solid effort from pitcher Joe Saunders. Today Dustin Moseley makes his second start of the season and is coming off a win over Oakland in which he allowed just one run over six innings of work. The Angels, who have won six of their first nine, look like a good underdog pick (+140) in this one according to Dunkel, which has L.A. favored straight up by 1 1/2 runs. Dunkel Pick: LA Angels (+140). Here are all of today's games.
