    Six-Pack for Wednesday

-- Huge 9th-inning single by Todd Walker tied game, then Mark Ellis singled off left field wall to win game, capping a two-run 9th inning rally off Jenks, as A's beat Chicago 2-1.

-- As an A's fan, am worried about Eric Chavez, who simply isn't the same hitter he used to be. He was hurt last year, but is healthy now, and he looks like a slap hitter.

-- Scott Hairston drilled a double off centerfield wall to give Arizona its sixth win in row, 5-4 over Reds in 11 innings.

-- St Louis handed Pirates a bitter setback, tying game with two runs in 9th, then winning it in 12th inning, 3-2.

-- Jorge Julio blew another save for Florida, then it started to rain again, and game wound up being suspended in top of 11th inning, tied 2-2. Game will resume Wednesday.

    -- Angels-Indians drew 19,031 fans. In Milwaukee.
By way of comparison, they drew 12,468 in Pittsburgh, 15,153 out in Oakland, 18,594 in Camden Yards. Interesting.

Wednesday's list of 13: Random midweek stuff........

      13) Masters champ Zach Johnson went to same high school in Cedar Rapids as former Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner.

      12) Charges against the Duke lacrosse players are going to be dropped, but what about the former coach who lost his job because of all this? Where does he go to get justice? What in the world did he do to have to lose his job?

      11) Wichita State had seven Texans on its roster last year, big reason why Mark Turgeon is now coach at Texas A&M.

      10) Orioles paid handsomely to rebuild their bullpen this year: Baez makes $5.7M, Bradford makes $3.2M, Walker $3M.

      9) Meanwhile, Ryan Howard makes $900,000 this season, and Jose Reyes $2.9M. Someone needs to fire their agent.

      8) Howard, by the way, has homered in his last five games vs the Mets, after homering off Burgos in sixth inning Monday.

      7) Pirates have now scored three or less runs in their last 14 home openers.

      6) Arizona's Opening Day payroll has gone down for the sixth year in a row, but these Snakes are playing well in their sharp new red and white uniforms with copper trim.

      5) Leader in driving distance on PGA Tour is Bubba Watson (314.0); John Daly is second (309.9). Only two drives a round are measured to come up with this stat.

      4) Dallas-Vancouver play in the opening round of the Stanley Cup tournament starting Wednesday; all four games between the two teams this season ended 2-1 in favor of home side.

      3) Thursday, April 19, Mets @ Marlins is being billed down in Miami as Lawyers' Appreciation Night; that should really pack 'em in. Just don't get in an accident in the parking lot.

      2) What message would have been sent had the Rutgers kids gone to their news conference and let Don Imus off the hook, acknowledging his inappropriate statements, but taking the high road, and forgiving him publicly? Wouldn't this have set a tone of forgiveness that would have been a lesson for all of us to follow?

      1) Instead, they joined a parade of people who will line up to end Imus' career; hey, the guy has been walking a fine line of inappropriate behavior for decades- maybe he's getting what he deserves, but the bottom line is, we're all too sensitive in this world. The concept of free speech is taking a beating.

                        Streaking Pitchers

                        Wednesday, April 11

                        Hot

Brad Penny (Los Angeles Dodgers) - No pitcher dominated a team in the majors like Penny dominated the Colorado Rockies last season. The Dodgers cashed in all five starts that Penny made against the Rockies in 2006, with three paydays coming after the All-Star break. Penny and the Dodgers are listed as -143 favorites for tonight's game against the Rockies on the back of Penny's 1.29 ERA after one start this season.

Noah Lowry (San Francisco Giants) - There is plenty of value in the Giants tonight with Lowry taking the hill. Lowry opened his season April 6 by allowing only six hits and one run in seven innings against the Dodgers. The promising left-hander paced the Giants to two wins over the San Diego Padres last season, who the Giants face tonight as +130 underdogs.

Felix Hernandez - (Seattle Mariners) - Baseball bettors have been waiting for the Mariners' young ace to reach his potential since his debut in 2004. That time has arrived. Hernandez turned in the best performance of any starting pitcher in the first week of MLB action as he shut out the Oakland Athletics through eight innings on opening day. The Mariners are priced as +147 underdogs today against the Boston Red Sox, whom Hernandez defeated in his only start against them last season.

                        Cold

Mike Mussina (New York Yankees) - Sportsbooks are favoring Mussina to do something he hasn't done in almost three years: defeat the Minnesota Twins. It won't be easy though - Mussina was roughed up for six runs in four innings in his first start this season, allowing opposing batters to get on base at a horrific .522 clip. New York is listed at -139 for tonight's game at the Metrodome.

Jake Westbrook (Cleveland Indians) - If Cleveland's 1-4 record against the Los Angeles Angels last season isn't enough to keep you away from the Tribe tonight look no further than Westbrook's first start this season. The lefty struggled through five innings of work April 4, giving up two jacks and seven runs in only five innings. Add that to the fact the Indians are playing tonight's "home" game at a neutral site (Miller Park in Milwaukee) because of the weather in Cleveland, and the value in the Indians dries up quickly. Oddsmakers have the Indians as -122 favorites for this contest.
