    Six-Pack for Monday

-- Why do baseball players wear sunglasses on their hats? Mets lost Saturday because Shawn Green missed a flyball in the sun, while his shades protected his hat from the sun.

-- A 102-year old woman hit a hole-in-1 last week in Chico, California; she'll be on the Tonight Show April 24.

-- After a week of home games, Bronx ranks 25th in majors with a 5.52 team ERA. Looks like phemon Philip Hughes is going to get call sooner than later; he allowed couple hits, two runs in five IP in his first AAA start.

-- Washington Nationals games are replayed on the dish at midnight daily; they are 1-6 after a week of home games. If they don't get a lot better, they could lose 110+ games.

-- Coco Crisp's real name: Covelli Loyce Crisp.

    -- Quote of Day:
"I have an obligation to fulfill with Kansas State, and I'm prepared to go back." Bill Walker, who blew out his knee after graduating from high school early, so he could play at K-State for Bob Huggins, who then bolted for W. Virginia.

Monday's list of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

      13) When Matsuzaka pitches against Seattle Wednesday nite he will face Ichiro Suzuki, who was 8-34 against him in Japan, with a homer, 4 RBI and four strikeouts.

      12) Dodgers have names on back of their uniforms again this year, for one reason only; Vin Scully reuqested they they be put back on, to make life easier for fans/announcers alike.

      11) I need an explanation as to how Norm Stewart can get in the Basketball Hall of Fame, but not Jerry Tarkanian.

      10) ESPN undoubtedly will have West Virginia-Cincinnati on a Big Monday next winter; you wonder if the chance to beat his old school contributed to Huggins leaving Kansas State.

      9) While they're at it, ESPN should book Holy Cross-Iona for a Bracket Buster game, a father/son coach duel of Willards, Ralph and Kevin.

      8) I forgot to mention this during the tournament, but kudos to Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan, who quoted The Jerk in one of his press conferences. Not everyone in coaching these days is human enough to have show a humorous side of them.

      7) Boston College lost national title game in college hockey two years in row, first team to do that since Denver ('63, '64).

      6) Mets scored 78 first inning runs on road last year, the most by any team that didn't use a DH, since 1956.

      5) Curt Schilling is one of nine Alaskan-born players in major league history.

      4) If you had wagered on every favorite in baseball so far this season, you would have been down 658 "units"after Friday's action, but then favorites went 13-1 Saturday, for a profit of 1,178 units, putting favorites in the black after Saturday

      3) As for totals, after the first week of play, unders have edge of 45-34-7.

      2) Sunday's highlight was seeing Urban Meyer sitting by the Braves' dugout Sunday, watching game, when group of eight guys, all dressed as the Easter Bunny, came and sat around Meyer and posed for a picture. About half the "bunnies" had bottle of beer in their hand.

      1) Meyer played two years in Braves' farm system and is still friends with former Atlanta infielder Mark Lemke.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis at Pittsburgh: Pick Cardinals +104

The St. Louis Cardinals finally received the power they were looking for when Albert Pujols, who hit 14 homers last April en route to 49 over the season, finally knocked one out the park in the Cardinals sixth game Sunday, a 10-1 destruction of Houston. The two-run homer broke Pujols out of a 1-for-17 start this April and helped bring the Cardinals’ record to 2-4 this season.

Pujols will be licking his chops at the prospect of facing Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ian Snell. Pujols took Snell out the ballpark three times in the teams’ last meeting on Sept. 3, 2006. The Cards won that contest 6-3.

However, Snell pitched well in his season debut April 2, striking out a career-high 11 in a 3-2 victory over Houston as a +154 underdog.

The Pirates also welcomed back second baseman Freddy Sanchez off of the disabled list last night after he recovered from a sprained right knee. The defending NL batting champion started right where he left off last season, getting two hits and an RBI in Pittsburgh’s 6-3 win over Cincinnati.

N.Y. Yankees at Minnesota: Pick Yankees -125

The Bronx faithful are already becoming impatient with a N.Y. Yankees team that has come out the gate poorly for the second straight year.

Boos were heard in Yankee Stadium after New York opened the 2006 campaign with a 1-4 record and they continue this year with the Yanks at 2-3. More bad news came yesterday when Hideki Matsui joined star pitcher Chien-Ming Wang on the 15-day disabled list with a strained hamstring.

Today, right-hander Carl Povano looks to improve from a nasty Opening Day performance in which he gave up four earned and six hits in just over four innings.

The Yankees will see a familiar face when right-hander Sidney Ponson, who was released by the Yankees last August after boasting a 10.47 ERA in five appearances, takes the mound for the 4-1 Minnesota Twins. Ponson is 6-12 over his nine-year career with a 4.63 ERA against the Yanks.

Cincinnati at Arizona: Pick Reds -102

Off to their best start in seven years, the Arizona Diamondbacks hope to snap a streak of four straight home opening losses against the Cincinnati Reds tonight.

Arizona is coming off a four-game sweep of the Nationals in Washington to reach 5-2 for the first time since it opened the 2000 season at 6-1. The Diamondbacks bats were in full effect as they outscored Washington 21-6 in the series.

The Reds’ bats have been booming as well, putting up 21 in the last four contests in which they went 3-1. The 6-foot-6, 275-pound Adam Dunn already has eight hits, three homers, and six RBIs.

Bronson Arroyo, a first-time All-Star last year, takes the hill for Cincinnati. He had career bests in innings-pitched (240.2), strikeouts (184) and ERA (3.29) last season.
