                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati: Pick Reds -116

Neither of these teams is a great bet on the road, so it’s not much of a surprise that in last year’s season series, the home team went 11-5.

Great America Ballpark is a hitter’s haven, which you’d think would suit the Pirates with guys like Jason Bay, Adam LaRoche and Xavier Nady in the lineup, but they can’t seem to get it going at the dish this year. In the initial outings of 2007, the Pittsburgh offense is following the trend that sent them spiraling at the end of 2006 when they couldn’t score a run to save their lives.

Zach Duke will do his best to keep the Reds’ bats in check, but this team is averaging 4.8 runs per game so far this year. That equals wins in this ballpark.

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee: Pick Brewers -118

Chris Capuano is the only guy in America who Cubs fans might hate more than Steve Bartman. Last year, the Brewers’ All-Star dominated the Chicago batters so completely that in three starts against the Cubs, Capuano earned three wins and didn’t allow a single run, including two complete-game shutouts.

"Any lefty who can come inside the way he does and throws changeups on the outside is going to be tough," former Chicago manager Dusty Baker said after the final shutout. "He was hitting that inside part of the plate with that fastball with regularity and then fading the ball away from you on the outside with that changeup."

After opening the season with a successful series against the Dodgers, the Brewers are playing with confidence and focus. That should help them repeat the success they had against Chicago early last season when they went 5-2 in the first two series against the Cubs.

St. Louis at Houston: Pick Cardinals +111

Houston is shaping up to be the worst bet in baseball at this point in the season. Think about it. Last year they were the worst hitting team in either league. The only thing that saved them was some decent pitching, but the staff has been downgraded without Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens, so you can bet things are going to get ugly from time to time.

Jason Jennings had some decent starts against St. Louis in his previous life in Colorado, but it won’t mean much if he doesn’t get any help from his new teammates on offense. And that doesn’t seem too likely with four five members of the lineup hitting worse than .300, including $100 million man, Carlos Lee. Then again, St. Louis hasn’t exactly been lighting up the scoreboard lately, but with the bats on that club, the runs are bound to come soon.
