    Six-Pack for Thursday

-- If NBA playoffs started today, Lakers would lose to the Spurs in first round. Kobe Bryant won't win another NBA title, but he'll probably win couple more scoring titles.

-- Milwaukee sat out Redd, Williams with "injuries" when Celtics came to town, but they still beat Boston, ending a losing streak, and hurting their lottery chances.

-- I hope Isiah Thomas signed his extension, because New York has been hideous since they announced it. You have to be an idiot to think he deserves more time to screw up this once-proud franchise.

-- Indians lit up White Sox pitching for 20 runs in first two games of their series.

-- Cardinal outfielders dropped four easy fly balls in getting swept by Mets; they only scored two runs.

-- Pirates swept Astros for first time ever in Juice Box, are now 3-0; their pitching isn't bad. This season could end a 14-year streak without a winning year.

Thursday's list of 13: Cleaning up old business......

      13) When Billy Donovan played at St Agnes High School on Long Island, he played for the late Frank Morris, an excellent coach who made his team run for every quarter they scored less than 20 points. This was before shot clock, 3-pointers, so you can see what an influence Morris was on Donovan..

      12) Speaking of Long Island, KL Wheat reports that in a high school baseball league on the island, they use wooden bats, which helps my godson Tom mow down opposing hitters.

      11) Minnesota Twins have now won Johan Santana's last 24 regular season home starts.

      10) Former used car dealer Bud Selig earned $14.6M last year as commissioner of North America's worst-run sport. If he is making that much, what do NBA owners pay David Stern?

      9) By the way, the new hats major league baseball is hyping aren't much different than the old ones, except that they cost $32 in the local m-all, which is absolutely ridiculous. I collect baseball hats; it was disappointing to finally see this new hat up close.

      8) Adrian Gonzalez is an impressive hitter for the Padres, who absolutely cleaned Red Sox' clock when they traded Mirabelli back to Beantown for Bard/Meredith.

      7) Tony Pena Jr hit two triples on Opening Day, first player to do that since freakin' 1950. Pretty impressive.

      6) When Craig Biggio gets his 3,000th hit later this season, he will be first player with 3,000+ hits to play for Astros.

      5) Colorado paid Air Force a $270,000 buyout to grab Bzdelik away from the Flyboys, a team that beat Colorado by 30+ pts in December. Buffs' basketball operation isn't first class, and thats why Ricardo Patton quit to go to Northern Illinois.

      4) Dana Altman went back to Creighton; could it be because two Razorbacks recently flunked drug tests, and another was tossed for academic reasons?

      3) Stoney Case, who played for Dennis Franchione four jobs ago, when he was at New Mexico, is now the starting QB for Tampa Bay Storm of Arenaball. Case was an NFL backup for six years, sat on AFL benches for few more, but now is back under center for the 0-5 Storm, replacing John Kaleo.

      2) Case, who I follow because he won us a bunch of plays in Albuquerque, was first NCAA player to pass for 8,000+ yards and also run for 1,000+ in his career.

      1) Florida is defending champ in both football and basketball, which makes AD Jeremy Foley the man in Gainesville, yet he is invisible, which is the way it should be. Any time an AD is trying to grab attention and credit for a team's success, its a bad situation for the coach and players.

          MLB
          Write-up

          Thursday, April 5

Starting Friday, we'll have lists of hot teams, cold teams, totals, umpires, hot and cold pitchers. The first week we're gathering info and using last year's pitching stats as point of reference. Enjoy the season, and good luck.

Marquis was 0-5, 6.94 in last five '06 starts, but somehow got big free agent contract from Cubs; he lost 10-3 here last year Aug 8, allowing four runs in 2.2 IP. Lohse was 2-5, 7.07 in his last seven starts in '06; he lost 11-4 to Cubs Sept 23, giving up six runs in his three innings pitched.

Braves handed Philly bad beats in first two games of season, as they won in extra frames last night; James was 7-1, 3.25 in his last eleven '06 starts, 1-0, 0.69 in two starts vs Phillies. Eaton was on DL until late July last year; he was 5-0, 5.45 in last six starts for Texas, as Rangers gave him 45 runs int he six games.

Bergmann was 0-2, 6.46 in six starts last year, but his best start was 7-inning, 3-run no-decision vs Arizona Sept 2, in game Nats later won, 8-3. Ed Gonzalez was 2-1, 1.80 in his last three starts in '06. Three of his four road starts last year stayed under the total.

Padres won first two games vs Giants. Morris was 0-4, 7.42 last five '06 starts, 2-2, 4.50 in five starts vs San Diego last season. Hensley was 3-1, 2.01 in his last five '06 starts, 0-1, 2.13 in pair of excellent starts vs Giants- the loss was 1-0 last Aug 14. Last 11 Hensley starts stayed under the total.

Verlander had 7.90 RA in his last seven '06 starts; he didn't pitch against Jays last season. Over is 4-1-1 in his last six home starts. Chacin had DUI during spring training, had 6.06 RA in his last three '06 starts, Six of his last seven starts stayed under the total.

Buehrle was 0-2, 7.66 in his last four '06 starts, 0-3, 10.32 in five starts against Indians last year; White Sox were 6-10 in his last 16 starts overall. Tribe won five of Sowers' last six starts, four of his last five starts stayed under total. Indians scored 20 runs in winning first two games of this series.

Matsuzaka makes American debut; this is uncharted territory, so we'll sit back and watch. Greinke almost quit baseball to pursue pro golf last year, then came back late in year-- he was Royals' top prospect at one point. Since neither starter made start in big leagues last year, not much info to go on.

Pettitte returns to Bronx after three-year absence; Astros won six of his last seven '06 starts, with over 3-0-1 in his last four. With an atrocious bullpen, almost impossible to ever play under in a Tampa game, since they can also hit a little. Seo was 1-2, 8.79 vs Bronx last year, losing 1-0, winning 19-6, losing 16-1.

Gaudin is reliever pressed into duty because Loaiza is hurt; A's got first win in Seattle last night, while Angels swept Texas in afternoon game. Angels were 10-3 in Saunders' starts last year, but A's knocked him out in first inning of his last start last year.

                              Phoenix at San Antonio
Phoenix has not been all the sharp on the road lately as the Suns are 0-4 ATS in their last four contests. But they did put together a solid effort at Dallas on March 14, coming away with a 129-127 win in overtime. Phoenix replicated that effort last Sunday at home against the Mavs with a 126-104 domination, showing that Steve Nash & Company can turn it on against the best in the league. They'll get that chance again tonight at San Antonio, which has been a little sloppy at home (3-3 ATS in last six games) of late. This is a close call, but the Vegas line favoring San Antonio (-4) looks a little high according to Dunkel, which has the Spurs favored by 3 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Phoenix (+4). Here are all of today's games.
