    Six-Pack for Tuesday

Random facts on college mascots.......courtesy of a strange TV show that was on Animal Planet, with Lee Corso........

-- The horned frog is actually a type of lizard.

-- Dam building by beavers helps to naturally restore our wetlands.

-- There are 17 different species of penguins.

-- Nova Southeastern is only school with nickname Sharks.

-- Gatorade was originally developed in the mid-60's to help hydrate the Florida Gator football team.

-- Temple's mascot is the owl, partly because the school originally had mostly night classes.

Tuesday's list of 13: Thoughts on best Monday of the year

      13) Obviously, there are 52 Mondays in a year, but this is, by far, the best one every year. Florida joined a select group by beating Ohio State for its second consecutive national title.

      12) Gators are first team EVER to win consecutive national titles, with the same starting lineup both seasons. It was a pleasure to watch their unselfish style of play.

      11) How did Lee Humphrey get away from Tennessee? He is from same town that Vols football coach Philip Fulmer lives in

      10) Someone asked Billy Donovan about Kentucky, but he deftly dodged the issue-- he'll have to address it soon. he did, as news conference went on, make couple of references to next year's Gator squad. I'm shocked if he leaves Florida.

      9) Greg Oden clinched first pick in draft Monday night, if he wants to come out. Tough decision for an 18-year old.

      8) We can now safely assume that Florida fans are spoiled.

      7) Coaching carousel starts spinning again:
      Butler's Todd Lickliter to Iowa
      Creighton's Dana Altman to Arkansas
Former Arkansas coach Stan Heath to South Florida.
Altman is best hire of those three.

      6) The GM of Devil Rays was on ESPN before Monday's loss in the Bronx; he looks like a little kid. Of course, an astute kid would have known enough to get a better bullpen this winter.

      5) Jose Contreras had an ugly start to season, allowing seven runs in less than two innings.

      4) Gil Meche is a hero in Kansas City, if only for a day, as the Royals win opener behind their expensive new pitcher.

      3) Why is there such a shortage of pitching?

      2) Minnesota just never loses when Santana pitches at home.

      1) Baseball is such a long season, so many games, we tend to overreact to the first couple games, but if Bobby Crosby does not start playing better for the A's, they need to use Scutaro. Crosby is always hurt, and he had the worst game I've ever seen a big league shortstop have Monday night. Awful.

          Tuesday, April 3

Once season gets underway a bit, we'll have lists of hot teams, cold teams, totals, umpires, hot and cold pitchers. The first week we're gathering info and using last year's pitching stats as point of reference. Enjoy the season, and good luck.

Peavy was 0-3, 6.62 in last three starts vs Giants, after being 2-0, 1.80 in his first two '06 starts vs SF; over is 5-1-2 in his last eight road starts. Zito makes Giant debut; A's lost four of his first five starts last season, but he was 1-1, 2.08 in his last three '06 starts.

Olsen was 0-3, 5.17 in his last five '06 starts, 1-1, 4.15 vs Nats in '06 (three starts); eight of his last dozen starts went over total. Hill was 1-3, 4.86 in six starts (Washington was 1-5 in those six games). Hill didn't pitch against the Marlins last season.

Wolf came back from injury last year, was 4-0, 5.95 in 12 starts for Philly (Phils were 9-3, scoring 7.4 rpg); Phils were 6-1 in his road starts last year. Capuano won one game after making the All-Star team; he was 0-4,6.25 in his last seven starts, 0-1, 3.21 in two starts against Dodgers last year. Under is 9-3 in his last 12.

Lidge blew another save for Astros, as Garner loses faith in his bullpen after bad 2006. Jennings makes debut after coming over from Colorado; Rockies were 6-17 in his starts if they gave him less than six runs. Snell was 1-2, 7.45 against the Astros in '06.

Kip Wells was 2-5, 6.75 in nine big league starts last year, split between Pirates/Rangers; he is on better team now; he lost 5-0 to Mets LY at Shea, allowing five runs in six IP. Hernandez is 3-2, 2.17 in his last six starts, with five of six staying under the total.

Livan Hernandez was 3-1, 2.65 in his last five starts last year, 1-1, 7.82 in two starts vs Colorado; he was better in game at Denver. Seven of his last eight starts stayed under the total. Colorado was 9-2 in last 11 Francis starts in '06, scoring 65 runs in last 7. Francis was 1-1, 4.01 in four '06 starts vs Arizona.

Last year, Washburn was 0-2, 6.50 in three starts vs A's last season, but Oakland got dismal infield defense in Monday loss to M's.

Escobar was 0-3, 11.68 vs Texas last year; his last eleven starts all stayed under total, as Angels scored total of 14 runs for him in last seven starts. LA Dodgers at Milwaukee
The Dodgers ran into the strong pitching yesterday of Ben Sheets, who threw the Brewers' first complete-game victory on opening day since Mike Caldwell in 1979. It doesn't get much easier today for L.A. as the Dodgers face Chris Capuano, who tied Roy Oswalt with a league-leading 25 quality starts last year. But Capuano struggled at the end with an 0-4 record in his final seven starts. Meanwhile Dodger starter, Randy Wolf, went 4-0 with the Phillies after coming back from elbow surgery in July. The Dodgers look like a decent underdog pick (+138) in this one according to Dunkel, which has L.A. favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: LA Dodgers (+138).. Here are all of today's games.
