    Six-Pack for Monday

Random thoughts to start the week with........

-- So, the Mets' magic number to clinch NL East is now 162.

-- For first time, Arena Football coaches aren't allowed on the field while play is going on. Previously, coaches stood slightly behind the play so they could call plays quicker.

-- 138 former Arena League players played at least once in the NFL.

-- The woman's basketball coach at Texas makes $800,000 a season? Does money grow on trees down there?

-- There have been eight lefthanded golfers who have won a PGA tournament, four who won more than one: Charles, Mickelson, Weir, Flesch.

-- The four prime college hoop coaching jobs that are still open: Kentucky, Arkansas, Michigan, Iowa. I'll be stunned if the Florida job replaces Kentucky on that list.

        Ohio State vs. Florida
It would be understandable if the Buckeyes were getting a little bit of an inferiority complex when it comes to the Gators. Already this year Florida dominated the heavily-favored Buckeyes on the football field to earn the BCS championship and pounded OSU on the hardwood in a 26-point defeat on December 23 in Gainesville. The fact that Ohio State will have to compete with those ghosts as well as Joakim Noah and Al Horford makes this contest a daunting challenge. But if nothing else, the Buckeyes have shown a resilience in the tournament that should serve them well. OSU came back from deep holes to win early round games against Xavier and Tennessee, and then cruised to a 16-point win over Memphis in what was supposed to be a close game. Even with Greg Oden on the bench in foul trouble against a favored Georgetown team, the Buckeyes kept it together on Saturday and survived with a 67-60 win. Ohis State comes into the game with a better record straight up (35-3 to Florida's 34-5) and a comparable record against the spread (24-14 for both). And while Florida looks primed to repeat as national champs, OSU should give the Gators a struggle and keep it within the Vegas line (-4 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Florida favored by 1. Dunkel Pick: Ohio State (+4 1/2).

Game 701-702: Ohio State vs. Florida
Dunkel Ratings: Ohio State 76.920; Florida 78.109
        Dunkel Line: Florida by 1
Vegas Line: Florida by 4 1/2
Dunkel Pick: Ohio State (+4 1/2)

              Championship Game

Florida beat Ohio State 86-60 on Dec 23 (-4), in game they that was tied 40-all early in the second half, after Buckeyes opened second half with 11-2 run, erasing 38-29 halftime deficit. Gators hit another gear, and young Ohio State crumbled in what was just their second true road game of season. Florida shot 60.3% from floor in game, making 9-18 treys (Green 4-7). Rebounding was 37-23, Florida. Ohio State shot just 36.5% from floor.

Ohio State hasn't lost since 72-69 loss at Wisconsin on Jan 9; they were down 20 to Tennessee, and were on ropes in last :10 vs Xavier, but pulled both games out. Oden dominates games with his defensive presence; it is up to Horford/Richard/Noah to gethim in foul trouble, which creates a faster-paced contest that will benefit more veteran Florida squad.

Favorites covered five of last six national championship games

In a championship game where the teams met during season, the loser of first meeting won five of last six rematches.

In last 20 years, it is only fourth time two #1 seeds have met in title game; favorites were 2-1 in previous three.

Florida has been awesome in March; they're also a defending champ, the more veteran team, and they're playing fifth game in this arena this month, having won SEC title here also. This run for Gators ends with a second consecutive title. Florida, 75-64.

NCAA Championship: #1 Florida vs. #1 Ohio State
                (9:21 PM ET)
These teams met back on December 23rd, 2006, with Florida routing Ohio State in an 86-60 home victory. Both had key players dealing with injuries, as Florida's Al Horford returned from a sprained ankle to total 11 points and 11 rebounds and Ohio State's Greg Oden was playing just his fifth game of the season after coming back from a hand injury. Horford dominated the matchup despite playing for the first time in more than two weeks, getting Oden into foul trouble. Oden has battled foul trouble throughout the NCAA Tournament, playing just three minutes in the first half on Saturday. Insiders believe the Buckeyes have to win this matchup this time around in order to have any chance at beating the defending champs. EDGE: FLORIDA
This is about as big of a revenge spot as you can possibly get for the Buckeyes, who not only lost the earlier meeting between the teams but also the 2007 BCS Championship game in football a little more than a week later. Ohio State entered the football game as a heavy favorite, unbeaten and the #1 team in the country. The Gators destroyed the Buckeyes 41-14, and you bet the underdogs would like nothing more than to return the favor here. EDGE: OHIO STATE
Florida is on a nine-game winning streak and 21-1 in postseason play the last three years, going 23-1 in March over that time. BIG EDGE: FLORIDA
Florida has won seven straight games at the Georgia Dome and is 9-1 in its last four appearances in the building. EDGE: FLORIDA
The Gators' five starters each average in double figures, yet do so by sharing the ball, as all average within 2.4 shots of one another and none average as many as 10 shots. EDGE: FLORIDA
Ohio State brings the nation's longest winning streak of 22 games into the national championship and will be playing for the title for the fifth time in school history. The Buckeyes are 1-3 in their last four appearances in the NCAA Championship game. SLIGHT EDGE: OHIO STATE
The Gators are 9-2 ATS in their last 10 NCAA Tournament games.
The Buckeyes are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games overall.
The OVER is 5-1 in the Gators' last six NCAA Tournament games and 7-1 in their last nine against non-conference opponents..

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Gators, Buckeyes in title game

Can the Florida Gators claim their second straight tournament title on Monday night? The oddsmakers like their chances, but in order to pick up back-to-back championships they'll have to get past Greg Oden and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Oddsmakers opened the Gators as 4-point favorites in this contest (tip-off is set for 9:21pm ET at the Georgia Dome on Monday night) shortly after the tourney's semi-final round was completed, and that line had moved to Florida -4.5 by the next morning. Bettors and oddsmakers have also raised the total to 140.5 points.

The Gators reached the title game by getting past the second-seeded UCLA Bruins by a final score of 76-66 on Saturday night. Florida took a six-point lead into the break in that contest, and cruised from there to the win at Georgia Dome.

Corey Brewer scored a game-high 19 points for Florida in the victory. Chris Richard chipped in with 16 points, Lee Humphrey had 14, and Taurean Green had 10. Al Horford dominated the glass with 17 rebounds to go along with his nine points, while Joakim Noah picked up eight points and 11 boards. Josh Shipp had 18 points for the Bruins, and Arron Afflalo poured in 17 points in the defeat.

The Buckeyes also knocked out a No. 2 seed on Saturday night to advance to the national title game. Ohio State led the Georgetown Hoyas 27-23 after a low-scoring first half (with Oden forced to the bench early due to foul trouble), and then scored 40 more points after the break to earn themselves a big 67-60 win.

Oden eventually came through with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds for Ohio State. Mike Conley Jr. led the Buckeyes' attack with 15 points and six assists in the win, while Jamar Butler was good for 10 points, and Ivan Harris picked up nine points and seven rebounds. For the Hoyas, Roy Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace each scored 19 points, and Jeff Green picked up 12 rebounds.

And now Oden and company will be looking to knock off the defending champs and take the title for themselves. Here's how each team fared in past rounds . . .

                  Ohio State's path to the championship . . .

Round 1: Won 78-57 versus Central Connecticut State (Line -20, Total 130)
Round 2: Won 78-71 versus Xavier (Line -7.5, Total 136.5)
Round 3: Won 85-84 versus Tennessee (Line -5, Total 144.5)
Round 4: Won 92-76 versus Memphis (Line -2, Total 136)
Round 5: Won 67-60 versus Georgetown (Line +1, Total 131)

                  Florida's path to the championship . . .

Round 1: Won 112-69 versus Jackson State (Line -27.5, Total 144.5)
Round 2: Won 74-67 versus Purdue (Line -12, Total 135)
Round 3: Won 65-57 versus Butler (Line -10.5, Total 126.5)
Round 4: Won 85-77 versus Oregon (Line -7, Total 145)
Round 5: Won 78-66 versus UCLA (Line -3, Total 131)

Both Ohio State and Florida picked up against-the-spread victories in rounds one, four, and five, while they both failed to cover the posted spread in rounds two and three. As well, the Buckeyes and Gators have combined for eight OVER plays in their 10 tourney games, with just Georgetown and Butler going UNDER.

The Buckeyes last played for the NCAA's basketball championship in 1962, and they last won the tournament title in 1960. However, Ohio State will still be looking for some championship revenge on Monday - the Gators' football team trounced the Buckeyes 41-14 in the BCS Championship Game back in January.

                    NCAA Finals: Buckeyes vs. Gators

The Florida Gators will be gunning for their second straight NCAA Tournament title on Monday night when they take on Greg Oden and the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Georgia Dome.

Mike Conley Jr.'s 15 points and six assists sparked Ohio State to Saturday's 67-60 win over Georgetown in the Final Four, coming in as 1.5-point underdogs. The 127 combined points were UNDER the posted total of 130.

Oden was next with 13 points and nine rebounds in the victory, and Jamar Butler added ten points for the Buckeyes.

The Gators advanced to the NCAA championship game with a 76-66 win over the UCLA Bruins Saturday night at the Georgia Dome. Florida covered the 3-point spread, and the combined 142 points were well OVER the posted total of 131.

Corey Brewer led the Gators with 19 points and two rebounds, while Chris Richard added 16 points in the win.

                    Team records:

                            Monday, April 2

Once season gets underway a bit, we'll have lists of hot teams, cold teams, totals, umpires, hot and cold pitchers. The first week we're gathering info and using last year's pitching stats as point of reference. Enjoy the season, and good luck.

Smoltz was 4-0, 1.24 in his last four '06 starts; he was 0-0, 3.86 in two '06 starts vs Philly, but had 6.00 RA in his last four starts on road. Myers was 4-1, 2.84 in his last eight starts last season, 1-1, 4.09 in five starts against Braves. His last six starts stayed under the total.

Willis was 3-1, 3.45 in his last five starts last season, 1-1, 6.11 in three '06 starts vs Washington; nine of his last 12 starts stayed under the total. Patterson was hampered by injury last year; he was 1-2, 4.65 in eight starts, but his two best starts both came vs Florida (1-0, 2.07)- four of his last five starts went over the total.

Lowe was 2-0, 3.20 in his last four starts last season, 1-0, 1.72 in two '06 starts vs Milwaukee. Dodgers won five of his last seven road starts. Sheets was 2-1, 2.34 in his last five starts last year; under is 5-2-1 in his last eight outings. He made only 17 starts because of injury last season.

Zambrano was 2-0, 3.68 in his last three '06 starts on the road; he was 3-0, 2.08 in his last three starts against the Reds, after going 0-2, 5.40 in his first three vs Reds last year. Six of his last seven starts went over total. Harang was 3-0, 2.81 in last three starts; nine of his last thirteen starts stayed under the total.

Arizona lost Webb's last five road starts in '06; he was 1-1, 3.46 in four starts against Rockies last year. Five of his last six starts stayed under the total. Cook was 0-3, 6.03 in his last five starts in '06, 1-3, 6.39 in five starts against Arizona. Colorado was 4-9 in his last thirteen home starts.

Oswalt was 8-0, 2.22 in his last eight '06 starts, 3-0, 0.90 in three starts vs Pirates last season; five of his last six starts went under the total; under was 5-0-1 in Duke's last six starts. Duke was 2-2, 2.25 in his last five starts in '06, but 0-2, 7.11 vs Astros in '06.

Kazmir was 0-2, 5.56 vs Bronx last season; D-Rays lost five of his last six starts in '06. For some reason, Bronx is starting Pavano on Opening Day, no idea why; he is always hurt, didn't pitch in game last year, and his model girlfriend dumped him recently, so he's been depressed. Tampa Bay yet to name a closer.

Halladay was 0-0, 2.25 in his last four '06 starts; Jays were 21-4 when they gave him 4+ runs to work with. Bonderman was 4-1, 3.37 in his last eight starts, with six of his last seven going over total; he was 1-0, 2.25 in two starts vs Toronto last season.

Sabathia left last spring start after being hit by liner on left arm; he was 3-0, 1.29 in his last four starts vs Pale Hose last season. White Sox were 4-10 in last fourteen Contreras starts last year; he had 6.55 RA in pair of no-decisions vs Indians in '06. Six of his last eight home starts went over total.

Meche was 0-0, 4.15 in two starts vs Boston last year; now he is highly paid Royal ace, but he had brutal spring, so we'll see how he does. Schilling was 2-2, 5.64 in his last seven road starts in '06; he lost his only start vs Royals, allowing five runs in 7.1 IP. Last three Meche starts all went over the total.

Haren was 3-0, 1.35 vs Mariners last season; A's were 5-3 in his last eight road starts. Six of his last eight starts overall went over the total. Hernandez was 1-3, 4.45 in his last five starts; he's lost some weight, big things are expected. Felix was 0-2, 11.00 vs A's last year. Oakland has dominated M's in recent seasons.
