I like the under 78 for my Astros this year. I don't think they'll be very good. I hope I'm wrong.

Yanks' Achilles' heel may be fragile rotation

Handicapper says bet New York under 96 wins

          By MATT YOUMANS
          REVIEW-JOURNAL

As long as the New York Yankees are following the lead of veteran shortstop Derek Jeter, they figure to be favored to win the World Series. Whether they will finish on top is not such a certainty.

The Yankees, who have gone six seasons without a title despite the biggest payroll in baseball by a large margin, are 4-1 favorites to take it all this year.

Jeter is coming off one of his best all-around seasons and is part of a loaded lineup that includes Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu, Jason Giambi and Alex Rodriguez.

But the first sign of trouble for the Yankees could be their Opening Day starter. Right-hander Carl Pavano, who missed the past 1 1/2 seasons with injuries, heads the rotation.

"The Yankees could be in for a little bit of difficulty," handicapper Andy Iskoe said. "Although they are going to have plenty of offense, the starting pitching is going to be in shambles.

"This is going to be as good as the Yankees team of last year? I don't see it."

The Yankees won 97 games last season, but Iskoe (thelogicalapproach com) recommends betting them under their regular-season win total of 96 this season.

New York lost left-hander Randy Johnson and replaced him with another veteran lefty, Andy Pettitte. Right-hander Mike Mussina returns, but Chien-Ming Wang is injured. The strength of the staff is still closer Mariano Rivera.

The Yankees scored a major league-high 930 runs last season and should again put up similar numbers despite trading outfielder Gary Sheffield to the American League champion Detroit Tigers.

"Pettitte and Mussina are getting up there in age, and I have some questions about the middle relief because it might get taxed more if the starting pitching doesn't come through," said Iskoe, who sees the Yankees winning about 92 games.

The win total for the Boston Red Sox is 92 1/2. The top choice in the National League is the New York Mets, who are 10-1 to win the World Series with a win total of 89.

"I've always felt it's easier to make a case for 'unders' rather than 'overs' simply because you don't know how injuries will come into play," Iskoe said.

More win total recommendations, with Iskoe's analysis:

          • Cincinnati Reds (Over 76) -- The Reds have one of the better one-two starting pitcher combinations in the National League that gets very little attention in Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo. Harang led the NL with 216 strikeouts and six complete games. They also have Eric Milton and Kyle Lohse in the rotation. The offense is not outstanding, but if Ken Griffey Jr. can stay healthy and Adam Dunn has a decent season, I think this team has a chance to finish .500 in a well-balanced division.

          • Houston Astros (Over 78 1/2) -- Everybody is making a big deal about the loss of pitchers Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte. I think Clemens might re-sign with Houston. Pettitte has been replaced by Jason Jennings, who had a very solid season for Colorado. The Astros are in good shape with starters Roy Oswalt, Woody Williams and Wandy Rodriguez. The offense is decent with Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee, and Morgan Ensberg has potential to drive in runs. This should easily be a .500 team.

          • St. Louis Cardinals (Under 85 1/2) -- Chris Carpenter is one of the top pitchers in the league. He went 15-8 with a 3.09 ERA last season. But with the exception of Carpenter, the starting pitching is weak. Albert Pujols is in the middle of the lineup, but how much more can you expect out of Jim Edmonds? Third baseman Scott Rolen has his problems with injuries. There is not a lot of potential for improvement. The Cardinals won the World Series, but they only won 83 games in the regular season. St. Louis could be in for a disappointing season.

          • San Diego Padres (Over 84) -- Jake Peavy, Chris Young and Greg Maddux make a pretty solid top three pitchers for a team that won 88 games last year. It's not going to be an outstanding offensive team, but the Padres have got Trevor Hoffman as a closer, and he can still get it done.

          • Washington Nationals (Under 65 1/2) -- The Nationals should easily lose 100 games. They basically have no experience on the mound. John Patterson is their ace, and he missed most of last season. They lost Alfonso Soriano from a lineup that wasn't that great last year. Every year, a team or two is going to lose 100 games or close to it, and Washington is probably a better candidate than either Kansas City or Tampa Bay.

Call me a homer, but I think Cleveland over 86 will be easy. If you look at how they did last year, they were top 5 in runs and starters ERA I believe, but their bullpen blew over 20 saves! This year they signed 4-5 guys to try to shore that up and have some good youngsters that should be ready. They should end up around 90 wins. GL!

I don't ever play these, and here's my reasons why.....You base these plays on who is playing now, and what happens when a Pitcher goes on the IRL, or a Hitter gets hurt, or shot in a Bar, or traded, or pissed off.....Too many intangibles in there for me.........Tell your fat ass bookie, you're not interested, and beat his ass the old fashioned way.....Daily bets, by you knowing who's hurt, who's hot, who's not.....IMO....Kapt
