  • Toledo RB charged in point-shaving scandal

University of Toledo running back Harvey "Scooter" McDougle Jr. has been charged with recruiting football and basketball players in order to shave points and fix games for a Macomb County gambler, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.

A criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit said the scheme was spearheaded by a man identified only as "Gary."
Allegedly Gary invited players to gamble and eat at Greektown Casino in Detroit. The complaint stated that one player was offered $10,000 to sit out a football game. Other players were given money and food among other gifts.

Even though McDougle told the FBI he received a car, telephone and other gifts from Gary, he insisted it never changed the way he played to affect the outcome of games.

McDougle, 22, was expected to appear in U.S District Court in Detroit on Friday and could not be reached for comment. There was no immediate response from school officials.

It's uncertain how many other athletes were implicated in the scheme because no other players or teams at Toledo were named in the complaint. At this point, it's also unclear if other schools are under investigation.

While there was no indication in the complaint that players threw any games because of the scheme, the document alleges that Gary, McDougle and others bribed Toledo athletes to impact the final score of specific games, so bets could be made on the games with illegal sports bookmakers.

"Once Gary and the players knew the line, they would decide if they could beat the spread," the complaint said. "If they were picked as an underdog by 10 points, they would decide if they could beat the 10 point spread. If they were picked as a favorite by a certain number of points, the players would decide if they would most likely win by that much."

Remember all the talk last season that "funny" things happened in football and basketball games in this particular conference? Now you know why.
Anyone who thinks that there are never attempted fixes in college sports is not seeing reality.

The MAC has been NOTORIOUS for funny business in CFB...I used to live up in MAC country & I believed those rumors before this story broke...

IMHO, the smaller or Mid Major conferences and teams is where the prey is easier to OBTAIN...

These guys more times than not are not going PRO, so $10G here, a car there...it's getting it when they can cuz once they are done, that cash cow is DONE...LOL

I obviously agree, and with the pros there are other incentives besides money; for example, some of the players get some kind of high by knowing what they do in the last few minutes of a game will determine if someone wins and loses. People who say that pros won't try to influence the pointspread outcome of a game or total simply because they are already rich don't understand the mindset of some of these guys, who in spite of their wealth still have a street mentality.

You are correct, and not only that but a NFL ref can just about call a holding penalty on every single play. Whats to stop him from calling one on a big gain or touchdown. We see that every week

What others fail to also realize that the 'HOMMIES' who aren't in the league...back at home KICKING IT...run books or have bookies and through a network are getting the 'SCOOP' as to what to play...so their bitches, hommies, brothers, cousins, aunts...u freaking name it, they are getting a piece of action one way or another...

Without too many details, was recently told of dude who played on a D1 CFB team that would go south of the border to bet games he was playing in...not going to mention names or schools, but that being said, U think his inside info helped him make some money???? This is direct info from the source or former player...so it isn't rumor or heresay...FACT. He didn't divulge if he provided info to others, but that isn't too far a step from using info or betting on/against your own team.

                    Anyway, it's out there.

                        Lots of great points made.
Personally, the college basket ball games I don't trust are those where one team is favored by nice fat double digits and already have the spread easily covered.
Then there is plenty of room by both players and sometimes officials to control the margin of victory resulting in a backdoor cover.
Like most of you, I have seen plenty of these types of games where I believe pointspread winner was compromised deliberately during the last few minutes of the game.
