    Six-Pack for Wednesday

We're looking at major league teams all month, before the season starts. Tonight, its the Minnesota Twins.

-- Michael Cuddyer knocked in 67 more runs last year than he did in 2005.

-- Last year was first time in 19 years a Twin hit 30+ homers.

-- Twins were sixth team since '62 to have MVP, guy that won batting title and Cy Young award on same team; Twins are only team of the six to have it be three different guys.

-- Joe Mauer is first catcher since 1942 to win batting title.

-- Liriano was 12-3, 2.16 last year, but won'tpitch this year, so Twins have to replace both him and Brad Radke (retired).

-- Twins had first place to themselves for one day last year, the only day it matters, the last day of the season.

Wednesday's list of 13: Knowledge about Matsuzaka

Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci wrote an interesting article in baseball preview issue about Boston's $103M pitcher. Here is some knowledge about Matsuzaka and Japanese baseball

      13) In Japanese baseball, hurlers throw 90 pitches in bullpen, the day before a start. Try asking Carl Pavano to do that.

      12) The whole American philosophy of coddling pitchers is going to be under scrutiny if Matsuzaka is as good as he is supposed to be. He once threw 54 innings in 11 days, back in his high school days, throwing 250-pitch, 17-inning complete game, then tossing a no-hitter in championship game

      11) Dice-K threw 189 pitches on Opening Day in 2003, 160 in his second start in '05, and 145 in another start. Any pitching coach in pro ball in this country who let a pitcher throw 130+ pitches in April would be fired immediately.

      10) Eight times last yr, Matsuzaka threw 130+ pitches in game.

      9) He threw 13 complete games last year, more than 29 of the 30 major league teams.

      8) Japanese starting pitchers work once a week, as opposed to every fifth day here; last season, 24 of his 25 starts came with six days' rest. This year, he is being asked to make 35 or so starts, almost all with four days' rest.

      7) Japanese pitchers rarely give in to hitters, so you get lot of deep counts; he didn't allow a hit in five innings vs Reds on Monday, but walked six and threw over 100 pitches.

      6) There are 150 Japanese journalists in Florida covering this spectacle; so much so that Red Sox expanded the press box in Fenway Park during the offseason.

      5) Matsuzaka has never put ice on his arm, never been taken out of a game due to a pitch count, and yet, MRI of his right shoulder was clean.

      4) The Royals are optimistic because their payroll is now up $13M from last year, to the $60M level. Boston paid $103M to sign one freakin' guy................think about that.

      3) Matsuzak throws eight pitches, and only 55% fastballs; on average, American pitchers throw 66% fastballs.

      2) Dice-K is only 5-11; rigthanded pitchers under 6-feet tall in this country often get shunned by scouts.

      1) Red Sox coaches expect Matsuzaka to get better movement on his pitches, because American baseballs are bigger than Japanese baseballs, with slightly higher seams. We'll see.

                      Saturday, March 31

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#1 Ohio State vs. #2 Georgetown (6:05 PM ET)
There has not been a center matchup like this in the Final Four since 1985 when Georgetown's Patrick Ewing met Houston's Akeem Olajuwon. The Hoyas are led in the middle by 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert while the Buckeyes feature 7-foot freshman phenom Greg Oden, who is considered the top NBA draft prospect in the country. Insiders believe Oden could struggle inside against Hibbert, who prides himself on defense and has much more experience against other players his size. SLIGHT EDGE: GEORGETOWN
Another key individual matchup will be Georgetown's Jeff Green against Ohio State's Ron Lewis, each team's best player so far in the tournament. The 6-foot-4 Lewis has made 12-of-26 shots from 3-point range (46 percent) in the first four games while averaging nearly 22 points. Meanwhile, Green has gone to the free-throw line just 11 times in the entire tourney and taken just six 3-point shots, instead concentrating more on defense. Insiders believe the 6-9 Green will need to become more aggressive in the Final Four and revert back to his MVP form from during the Big East Tournament, when he made 20-of-24 free throws in the last two games en route to the title. SLIGHT EDGE: GEORGETOWN
The Hoyas are 20-6-2 ATS in their last 28 games overall.
The Buckeyes are 1-4 ATS in their last five games versus the Big East.
The UNDER is 5-0 in the Hoyas' last five games versus the Big 10.
The UNDER is 7-1 in the Buckeyes' last eight games versus the Big East.

#1 Florida vs. #2 UCLA (8:45 PM ET)
Florida is on an eight-game winning streak and 20-1 in postseason play the last three years, going 22-1 in March over that time. BIG EDGE: FLORIDA
Florida has won six straight games at the Georgia Dome and is 8-1 in its last three appearances in the building. EDGE: FLORIDA
The Gators' five starters each average in double figures, yet do so by sharing the ball, as all average within 2.4 shots of one another and none average as many as 10 shots. EDGE: FLORIDA
Florida head coach Billy Donovan is one of only nine active coaches to reach three or more Final Fours. EDGE: FLORIDA
UCLA has an all-time winning percentage of .738 in the NCAA Tournament with a record of 93-33. EDGE: UCLA
The Bruins are allowing just 50 points per game over the first four games of the NCAA Tournament, with each game going UNDER the total. EDGE: UNDER
UCLA is 11-1 this year against ranked opponents and 17-2 against teams in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. BIG EDGE: UCLA
Florida defeated UCLA 73-57 in last year's national championship game. EDGE: FLORIDA
The Bruins are 21-6-1 ATS in their last 28 games as underdogs.
The Gators are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 NCAA Tournament games.
The UNDER is 14-3 in the Bruins' last 17 NCAA Tournament games.
The OVER is 4-1 in the Gators' last five NCAA Tournament games.

                        Houston at LA Clippers
Houston comes in hot after winning eight of its last 10. But the Clippers have put together a solid streak as well with four wins in their last five games. Los Angeles has also posted a 4-1 record against the spread, including covering the last two at home against Washington (111-105) and Utah (104-72). Houston is just 2-2 against the spread in its last four road games with the wins coming against Eastern Conference teams (Philadelphia and Toronto) while losing to the Western teams (New Orleans and Phoenix). With the Clippers playing some of their best ball of the season right now, L.A. looks like a good underdog pick at home (+2 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Clippers favored straight up by 4. Dunkel Pick: LA Clippers (+2 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                            Atlanta at Florida
The Thrashers are looking to make the playoffs for the first time in the franchise's history, while Florida is all but out of the running. But the Panthers showed they still had some fight last night with a 5-2 road win at Tampa Bay that improved their record to 3-1-1 in the past five games. Atlanta has been a little shaky of late, especially on the road where the Thrashers have lost seven of their last 10. Florida looks like a good home underdog pick in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Panthers favored straight up by 1/2 a goal. Dunkel Pick: Florida (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
