    Six-Pack for Tuesday

We're looking at major league teams all month, before the season starts. Tonight, its the Kansas City Royals.

-- Royals have 310 losses the last three seasons. Not good.

-- Royals went 10-8 against National League last year, their first winning record vs NL since '98. Their request to join the NL was promptly denied.

-- Mark Redman won 11 games for Royals last year, most by a KC pitcher since '02, but Redman quickly left for Atlanta.

-- Games at Kauffman Field averaged 11.40 runs/game last season, most in big leagues. Probably says more about the Royals' pitching than the ballpark.

-- Fortunately, four of their top six prospects are pitchers, now that 3B Alex Gordon is starting in big leagues.

-- Optimism: Royals increased their payroll by $13M, it is at the $60M level now, but they overpaid for Gil Meche (11-8, 4.48 with Seattle) to get to this point.

Tuesday's list of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) August, 2011, I'll be in Canton to see Marshall Faulk get inducted into the Hall of Fame. Faulk-Bettis-Curtis Martin all going in the Hall on same day. Good day for running backs.

      12) NFL schedule will be released in full week from Thursday, but they let a couple of crumbs spill Monday; Saints-Colts is season opener Sept 6, then Giants-Cowboys is first Sunday night game that same weekend.

Monday night doubleheader in Week 1: Ravens-Bengals, followed by Cardinals-49ers. Ron Jaworski is the new guy in the ESPN Monday Night booth.

      11) Thanksgiving Day tripleheader:
      Packers-Lions, Jets-Cowboys, Colts-Falcons

      10) David Carr played five years for Houston, banked $31M+, but Texans ranked higher than 28th in offense once in those five years. That said, was it his fault Houston declined to pick Mr Reggie Bush last season?

      9) So now Houston pays Matt Schaub $48M for six seasons. Hopefully, they'll give him more help than Carr got.

      8) Padres' Kevin Kouzmanoff is only player in history of the major leagues to hit first pitch thrown to him for a grand slam.

      7) There are 150 Japanese journalists in Fort Myers, just to follow Daisuke Matsuzaka around.

      6) San Antonio is now 30-4 in last 34 games against Golden State, one of many reasons Warriors will miss playoffs for an NBA-high 13th straight season.

      5) Celtics beat Toronto Monday; not sure how well Boston practiced Sunday, considering Doc Rivers was in New Jersey watching his son play for Georgetown.

      4) Watched Midland beat Chipola last night in national junior college hoop tournament; good level of play. Last season, 56 kids went from junior college tourney to Division I teams.

      3) Arkansas won 20+ games last two seasons, but lost in the first round of NCAAs, which cost Stan Heath his job. Don't be feeling sorry for Stan, though, he got $900K to walk, and could land back in East Lansing with Tom Izzo, after Izzo lost assistant Jim Boylen (new head coach at Utah) Monday.

      2) It bothers me when a guy like Travis Lee asks Nationals to release him, because he "......lost his passion for the game." The guy makes millions to be a mediocre first baseman, and he just walks away from it? Lee admitted to not wanting to be on the field as early as last season, but hoped his passion for the game would return this spring, which it didn't.

      1) All of which further underlines the incompetence of Tampa Bay's front office, which gave Lee 385 plate appearances last year, without figuring out the guy didn't care anymore. Nice.

        NIT semifinals

Clemson, Air Force are both away from home for first time since conference tourneys; Tigers are only team in country yet to be beaten in non-conference game; they won first three games in NIT by 7,21,4 points. Air Force is 16-1 in non-league games-the only loss was on neutral court vs Duke. Falcons have only 28 turnovers in three games, now face ultra-athletic Clemson team that forced 17.3 turnovers per game in this tourney. Problem for Tigers is their horrible foul shooting. Both teams are 1-6 in last seven games away from their home courts.

None of four teams in NIT semis had to win a road game to get here. Mississippi State won its three home games by 19,29,15 points, hammering a Florida State squad that had been playing great. West Virginia won its three games by 24,13,5 pts, nipping NC State in last game. State lost nine of last 12 road games, but if any of these teams had been strong on road, they would've made NCAAs. WVa lost seven of last nine away from home. Contrast of styles very similar to first game, would give MSU a better shot than Clemson, which lost ton of close games.

Final Four - Tips and trends

                Saturday, March 31

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#1 Ohio State vs. #2 Georgetown (6:05 PM ET)
There has not been a center matchup like this in the Final Four since 1985 when Georgetown's Patrick Ewing met Houston's Akeem Olajuwon. The Hoyas are led in the middle by 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert while the Buckeyes feature 7-foot freshman phenom Greg Oden, who is considered the top NBA draft prospect in the country. Insiders believe Oden could struggle inside against Hibbert, who prides himself on defense and has much more experience against other players his size. SLIGHT EDGE: GEORGETOWN
Another key individual matchup will be Georgetown's Jeff Green against Ohio State's Ron Lewis, each team's best player so far in the tournament. The 6-foot-4 Lewis has made 12-of-26 shots from 3-point range (46 percent) in the first four games while averaging nearly 22 points. Meanwhile, Green has gone to the free-throw line just 11 times in the entire tourney and taken just six 3-point shots, instead concentrating more on defense. Insiders believe the 6-9 Green will need to become more aggressive in the Final Four and revert back to his MVP form from during the Big East Tournament, when he made 20-of-24 free throws in the last two games en route to the title. SLIGHT EDGE: GEORGETOWN
The Hoyas are 20-6-2 ATS in their last 28 games overall.
The Buckeyes are 1-4 ATS in their last five games versus the Big East.
The UNDER is 5-0 in the Hoyas' last five games versus the Big 10.
The UNDER is 7-1 in the Buckeyes' last eight games versus the Big East.

#1 Florida vs. #2 UCLA (8:45 PM ET)
Florida is on an eight-game winning streak and 20-1 in postseason play the last three years, going 22-1 in March over that time. BIG EDGE: FLORIDA
Florida has won six straight games at the Georgia Dome and is 8-1 in its last three appearances in the building. EDGE: FLORIDA
The Gators' five starters each average in double figures, yet do so by sharing the ball, as all average within 2.4 shots of one another and none average as many as 10 shots. EDGE: FLORIDA
Florida head coach Billy Donovan is one of only nine active coaches to reach three or more Final Fours. EDGE: FLORIDA
UCLA has an all-time winning percentage of .738 in the NCAA Tournament with a record of 93-33. EDGE: UCLA
The Bruins are allowing just 50 points per game over the first four games of the NCAA Tournament, with each game going UNDER the total. EDGE: UNDER
UCLA is 11-1 this year against ranked opponents and 17-2 against teams in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. BIG EDGE: UCLA
Florida defeated UCLA 73-57 in last year's national championship game. EDGE: FLORIDA
The Bruins are 21-6-1 ATS in their last 28 games as underdogs.
The Gators are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 NCAA Tournament games.
The UNDER is 14-3 in the Bruins' last 17 NCAA Tournament games.
The OVER is 4-1 in the Gators' last five NCAA Tournament games.

The Mavericks are winning by an average margin of 10.8 points during their 20-game win streak over the Hornets, currently the most consecutive victories by one team over another in the four major North American professional sports. BIG EDGE: MAVS
The UNDER is 6-0 in the last six meetings.

Seattle SuperSonics at Minnesota Timberwolves (8 PM ET)
Damien Wilkins has been inserted into the starting lineup in leading scorer Ray Allen's place and is averaging 10.3 points over the last three contests. Seattle struggled to find its offense without Allen on Sunday, shooting just 36.6 percent en route to a 120-79 loss to San Antonio. EDGE: T-WOLVES
Although Seattle has taken two of three meetings between the teams this season, the Timberwolves have won three straight and 13 of the last 16 head-to-head matchups at home. EDGE: T-WOLVES
The home team is 6-0-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
The UNDER is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

                              Clemson vs. Air Force
This NIT semifinal pits two teams that started off hot only to cool off down the stretch and eventually miss the NCAAs with one-and-done conference tourneys. But both have seemingly turned it around with three wins in the NIT -- albeit all at home. Of the victories, the Tigers had the most impressive in beating Syracuse by Vegas line (4) with a 74-70 victory, while the Falcons failed to cover the line (6 1/2) and needed a bucket in the final seconds just to get past DePaul (52-51). Clemson also had a better record against the spread away from home (8-3) this season compared to Air Force's 6-8 mark. Even as the Tigers were stumbling to the finish line they still found a way to win at then No. 21 Virginia Tech on March 4. Two of Air Force's last three away games ended in losses to lower-rated TCU and Wyoming. The Tigers look like a good underdog pick (+1 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Clemson favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Clemson (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

Game 611-612: Clemson vs. Air Force
