      This week in the NHL

Monday, March 26 to Sunday, April 1

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      This Week in the NHL

The Eastern Conference playoff picture is still a mess heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. Here's a look at who the Lightning, Rangers, Hurricanes, Canadiens, et al. play this week, along with all the other matchups around the NHL . . .

      Monday

The big races might be in the Eastern Conference, but the only game on the schedule for Monday night features two Western Conference powers. The Ducks will travel to Detroit to play the Red Wings, with both teams striving to finish first-place overall in the conference (and the league). Detroit currently has one more point than Anaheim (101-100), although both teams head into Monday night trailing the Preds in the conference.

      Tuesday

The Eastern contenders return to action on Tuesday, with the two key matchups being the Hurricanes at Toronto and the Rangers at Montreal; all four of those teams could finish anywhere from sixth to 11th place in the conference standings this season. Other Eastern bubble teams in action on Tuesday include the Lightning (who host state-rival Florida), and the Islanders (who get a visit from New Jersey). The Bruins have fallen well off the pace in the East, and they'll be in tough on Tuesday on the road against Ottawa. Meanwhile, the Sens' main competition for the No. 4 seed is Pittsburgh, and they'll be on the road against lowly Washington that night. Elsewhere on a busy Tuesday night it'll be Columbus at St. Louis, Edmonton at Nashville, Calgary at Minnesota, Phoenix at Dallas, Vancouver at Colorado, and Los Angeles at the Sharks.

      Wednesday

The Sabres are likely going to be atop the Eastern Conference standings when the regular season comes to an end, but they've been playing mediocre hockey over the past couple of weeks. Buffalo will host another division leader on Wednesday when the Devils come to town. The Thrashers are looking to win their division as well, and they'll play in Florida against the Panthers that night. Another Southeast team, Carolina, plays on the road against Philadelphia Wednesday night, while the Ducks will be at Chicago.

      Thursday

The battle for first place in the Central Division will go another round on Thursday, with the Red Wings in Nashville to take on the Predators. Neither Detroit nor Nashville has been rolling in the wins lately, which has kept this race tight (and allowed the Ducks to sneak into the picture for top spot in the conference). Anaheim will get an easier opponent on Thursday, as they play a road game against Columbus. Elsewhere in Western matchups it'll be Edmonton at St. Louis, Calgary at Minnesota, Colorado at Phoenix, and Vancouver at Los Angeles. Over in the Eastern Conference there are just two games on Thursday - Pittsburgh will be at Boston, while Toronto will be at Atlanta.

      Friday

The Stars and Sharks haven't been able to make up much ground on the Ducks in the Pacific Division standings over the past few weeks, but a late stumble by Anaheim could put either of them on top of the division when the regular season concludes. Dallas will play the Red Wings in Detroit on Friday night, while San Jose will get a visit from the Coyotes. Over in the Southeast Division the Lightning and Hurricanes will battle on Friday, while Northeast Division rivals Montreal and Ottawa will meet in Canada's capital. Also slated for Friday night are Philadelphia at New Jersey, Washington at Florida, the New York Islanders at Buffalo, and then meaningless Columbus at Chicago.

      Saturday

The Canucks have been red hot over the past few weeks, but the Wild have been just as good and they're right in the hunt for first place in the Northwest Division. And both Vancouver and Minnesota will take on division opponents on Saturday - the Wild will be in Colorado, while the Canucks will host Calgary. Two other Western powers meet on Saturday night when Dallas visits Nashville, while the Ducks will be looking to pick up an easy win in St. Louis. Key Eastern matchups on Saturday include Pittsburgh at Toronto, Buffalo at Montreal, and Ottawa at the New York Islanders, while it'll also be Atlanta at Boston, the New York Rangers at Philadelphia, & Washington at Tampa Bay.

      Sunday

The second-last week of the National Hockey League regular season will end with six Sunday matchups, with Boston at New Jersey, Detroit at Columbus, and Edmonton at Chicago in matinee action. On Sunday night the most important game will see the Maple Leafs visiting Madison Square Garden to play the Rangers, while Carolina will continue their playoff quest down in Florida, and Los Angeles will pay a visit to San Jose.

Final Four - Tips and trends

                    Saturday, March 31

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#1 Ohio State vs. #2 Georgetown (6:05 PM ET)
There has not been a center matchup like this in the Final Four since 1985 when Georgetown's Patrick Ewing met Houston's Akeem Olajuwon. The Hoyas are led in the middle by 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert while the Buckeyes feature 7-foot freshman phenom Greg Oden, who is considered the top NBA draft prospect in the country. Insiders believe Oden could struggle inside against Hibbert, who prides himself on defense and has much more experience against other players his size. SLIGHT EDGE: GEORGETOWN
Another key individual matchup will be Georgetown's Jeff Green against Ohio State's Ron Lewis, each team's best player so far in the tournament. The 6-foot-4 Lewis has made 12-of-26 shots from 3-point range (46 percent) in the first four games while averaging nearly 22 points. Meanwhile, Green has gone to the free-throw line just 11 times in the entire tourney and taken just six 3-point shots, instead concentrating more on defense. Insiders believe the 6-9 Green will need to become more aggressive in the Final Four and revert back to his MVP form from during the Big East Tournament, when he made 20-of-24 free throws in the last two games en route to the title. SLIGHT EDGE: GEORGETOWN
The Hoyas are 20-6-2 ATS in their last 28 games overall.
The Buckeyes are 1-4 ATS in their last five games versus the Big East.
The UNDER is 5-0 in the Hoyas' last five games versus the Big 10.
The UNDER is 7-1 in the Buckeyes' last eight games versus the Big East.

#1 Florida vs. #2 UCLA (8:45 PM ET)
Florida is on an eight-game winning streak and 20-1 in postseason play the last three years, going 22-1 in March over that time. BIG EDGE: FLORIDA
Florida has won six straight games at the Georgia Dome and is 8-1 in its last three appearances in the building. EDGE: FLORIDA
The Gators' five starters each average in double figures, yet do so by sharing the ball, as all average within 2.4 shots of one another and none average as many as 10 shots. EDGE: FLORIDA
Florida head coach Billy Donovan is one of only nine active coaches to reach three or more Final Fours. EDGE: FLORIDA
UCLA has an all-time winning percentage of .738 in the NCAA Tournament with a record of 93-33. EDGE: UCLA
The Bruins are allowing just 50 points per game over the first four games of the NCAA Tournament, with each game going UNDER the total. EDGE: UNDER
UCLA is 11-1 this year against ranked opponents and 17-2 against teams in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. BIG EDGE: UCLA
Florida defeated UCLA 73-57 in last year's national championship game. EDGE: FLORIDA
The Bruins are 21-6-1 ATS in their last 28 games as underdogs.
The Gators are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 NCAA Tournament games.
The UNDER is 14-3 in the Bruins' last 17 NCAA Tournament games.
The OVER is 4-1 in the Gators' last five NCAA Tournament games.
