San Jose at Carolina
San Jose is the hottest team in hockey right now with an 8-0-2 mark since March 4 while outscoring the opposition 38-10. The Sharks' top line continued to play well in a 5-1 win over Atlanta on Thursday with Jonathon Cheechoo scoring three goals and Joe Thornton adding three assists. Evgeni Nabokov has also been impressive in the net with a 6-0-2 record and 1.12 GAA since March 4. The Hurricanes did beat Washington 4-3 on Thursday for their third win in four games, but don't look to have the firepower to keep up with San Jose right now. NCAA Regional Finals

Underdogs have dominated this round last four years, covering 14 of 16 regional finals, which results in slightly lower spreads than you might think here. Ohio State's last loss was January 9 at Wisconsin; Memphis' last loss was Dec 20 at Arizona. Last two games have seen Buckeyes with narrow escapes; they've yet to cover in this tournament. Presence of Oden inside means Memphis will need to hit some perimeter shots; they were 5-17 from arc vs Aggies Thursday, 10-33 last weekend. Bench edge goes to Calipari. Smallish crowd expected in San Antonio.

Over last three seasons, when higher seeded team is favored to win a regional final, higher seed is 0-10 vs spread; last team that beat spread as higher seeded favorite was UConn in '04 against 7 seed Alabama. Kansas hasn't lost since blowing double digit lead at home vs A&M Feb 3. UCLA is allowing 48.7 ppg so far in tournament, Kansas is scoring 85.3. Howland will try to grind this out and make it ugly; he won his regional final 50-45 a year ago, vs Memphis.

Six-Pack for Saturday

-- Officials have to call the travel on Georgetown at end of Friday's game. I feel bad for Vanderbilt; they have to feel sick about losing a game that way, like they got cheated.

-- Tennessee made 16-31 from arc Thursday, but only 8-17 from foul line, and they lose by a point. Go figure.

-- How about Wisconsin? They're only one of top 8 seeds in tournament that isn't still playing.

-- The more you think about it, John Calipari makes a lot of sense for the Kentucky job.

-- In the Sweet 16 games. USC led by nine at half, Vandy by 8, Texas A&M by 5, Tennessee by 17, but they all lost.

-- All four #1 seeds trailed in their regional semifinal games, all by at least six points, but all four won.

The Sports Illustrated baseball preview issue found its way into my hands Friday; here are some things I learned..........

13) In his career, Jason Giambi's slugging percentage is 92 points higher when he plays first base, as opposed to at DH.

12) Devil Rays lost 60 games last year that they had a lead in, 15 more than any other American League team.

11) White Sox' Charlie Haeger is youngest pure knuckleballer to make major leagues since Charlie Hough in 1970.

10) Royals' payroll is $13M higher than it was last season.

9) 1990 Red Sox hold all-time record by grounding into 174 double plays; last year's A's grounded into 170. Odd thing is, both teams made the playoffs.

8) Seattle DH's hit .235 last year, with only 38 extra base hits.

7) There were 157 home runs hit at Fenway last year, 216 in Boston road games, the biggest differential in big leagues.

6) Indians scored 236 more runs than they allowed last year, second-best ratio in majors; Cleveland was only team in the top nine in run differential that missed the playoffs.

5) Twins made the playoffs last year, but threw one complete game all season, and they lost that game, 2-0.

4) Indians (84), Angels (80) allowed most unearned runs last year. Cardinals (41) allowed the least.
