    Six-Pack for Friday

We're looking at a different major league team each day this month, as baseball season approaches. Today, we look at the Seattle Mariners........

-- Jose Lopez' 79 RBI were most in the last sixty years by a second baseman who was 22 years old or younger .

-- Raul Ibanez knocked in 123 runs last year; who knew?

-- Richie Sexson was 8-15 with bases loaded last season, hitting grand slam five times.

-- Closer JJ Putz pitched 78.1 innings last year, striking out 104 hitters, allowing only 59 hits.

-- Ichiro Suzuki has stolen base streak of 40 in a row since he was last thrown out.

-- 13 Mariners made their major league debut last year.

Friday's list of 13: Thoughts on all things hoop............

      13) The coaching carousel will be spinning like Linda Blair's head in The Exorcist pretty soon, with Kentucky, Michigan jobs both open. Were the Wildcats caught napping by the sudden departure of Orlando (Tubby) Smith to Minnesota?

      12) Tremendous coup by the Gophers, by the way. No other way to say it; the AD deserves a raise for this hire.

      11) What exactly is Michigan thinking about; unless they get Mike Montgomery signed, they've been one-upped by one of their league rivals, and in a big way.

      10) College sports can be fascinating; Rich Brooks finishes over .500 once with Kentucky's football team, and he gets a multi-year extension. Tubby basically gets run out of town by negativity, and he gets to second round of NCAA each and every year, and also won a national title (I know, with players Pitino recruited, but he still won a title). Expectations are way different for the two programs, but it is the same school, after all........its just funny.

      9) If Billy Gillespie says no to Kentucky, then what? It goes without saying Donovan, Pitino will turn them down, if in fact they are approached. There aren't a lot of great players in the state of Kentucky, and expectations are stupid high, which is enough to make Kentucky a tough job to fill.

      8) But then there's the money, which makes it a much easier job to fill. Between recruiting and the coaching nonsense, the month of April is going to be very interesting. Just about all the big names will be speculated on for Kentucky job.

      7) Major college coaching is fragile; Jamie Dixon was in Sweet 16 because Aaron Gray came back for his senior year. Out at Arizona State, Rob Evans got fired last season because its star, Ike Diogu, didn't come back for his senior year, just like Ricardo Patton never got Colorado off the ground after guard Chauncey Billups left early for the NBA.

      6) Whatever Memphis pays John Calipari, he earns it; despite playing in a league that isn't very challenging, he has Tigers in Elite 8 for second year in row, even after he lost 3 starters from last season. They haven't lost since December 20.

      5) Going back to coaching carousel for second, where do the Iowa Hawkeyes go for a new coach? Iowa is tougher job, as there aren't lot of great players in Iowa, but there are a lot of good ones. The Big 11 is going to get shaken up this spring. The Iowa hire is critical one for the Hawkeyes.

      4) A guy like Lon Kruger is going to be tough to get out of Vegas, because he's already made his money, having been in NBA for few years. Now its about quality of life for him, and where would you rather be than Las Vegas?

      3) Would Michigan throw a boatload of money at Calipari? The facilities in Ann Arbor aren't as good as some other big programs, and the powers that be don't seem that concerned about it. Not like its football, after all.

      2) Watching the Pitt-UCLA game was like going to the gym in preseason and watching an intrasquad scrimmage.

      1) I may be nitpicking, but there is a rule that says if a player has blood on his jersey, he has to either change the jersey or leave the game. Greg Oden was allowed to play the last 1:17 vs Tennessee with blood on front of his jersey. According to the rules, he at least should have put a different jersey on.

That shouldn't overshadow Buckeyes coming back from dead once again, rallying from a 49-29 first half deficit. Tennessee is young team with only one senior, and tonight it showed.

        NCAA Regional Semifinals

        Friday, March 23

Georgetown beat Vanderbilt in Nashville 86-70 Nov 15 (-1); was Vandy's season opener, Hoyas' second game. Vandy's Foster was held to 2 points in 26 minutes that night. Last year, Vandy won at Georgetown, 68-61. Hoyas won six in row, are 17-1 in its last 18 games; they've allowed 50.7 ppg in last three games, but Commodores play similar style offense as Hoyas- they've put up 77.5 ppg in winning first two NCAA games, but needed pair of OTs to upset Washington State in second round.

Dome setting doesn't favor teams that shoot lot of 3's; 48.8% of Butler's shots come from behind the arc, compared to 32.9% for Florida. These teams met in first round in '00, with Mike Miller scoring late hoop as Florida escaped by point, on way to Final Four that year (lost to Michigan State in final). Underdogs now 13-7 vs spread in this round last 2.5 years. Gators are 6-0 so far in March, winning by 13,17,21,21,43,7 points. Butler won SU all five times they've been an underdog this season.

#1 seeds are 19-3 SU in this round last 6+ years, 13-9 vs spread; North Carolina won last six games, by 14,15,15,9,21,14 pts- they beat Arizona 92-64 in only game vs Pac-10 foe this year. USC is 4-1 in last five games, but they got crushed by Oregon in finals of Pac-10 tourney, trailing by 38 at one point. UNC won sixteen of seventeen outside of ACC. Trojans are 10-2 vs spread as an underdog this season, 5-1 when getting five or more pts. Floyd didn't fare well vs Williams when both coached in Big 12.

42.1% of Oregon's shots come from behind the arc, compared to 36.1% for UNLV; Rebels' Kruger played vs these guards in his three years as an ASU Sun Devil, which should help here. 7 seeds are 4-3 in this round the last decade; 3 seeds are 10-10 in this round SU the last decade, but only 3-6 vs spread as a fave. UNLV won its last nine games (8-1 vs spread); Kruger has been coach in both Final Four and NBA; he should rate a slight edge over Kent. Oregon and Clemson are only two teams in country that haven't lost a non-league game this season (14-0).

                          Miami at Indiana
Just a month ago, Indiana was four games over .500 and in sixth place in the East, while the Heat were two games below .500 and in eighth place. Since then the Heat have won 11 of 13 to move into sixth place, while the Pacers have dropped 13 of 14 and face missing the postseason for the first time since 1997. Tonight the two teams meet with Miami coming off a 91-83 road win at Atlanta that snapped the Hawks five-game home winning streak. Meanwhile the Pacers fell to San Antonio (90-72) increasing the average margin of their last three losses to 14 1/2 points. The Heat look like a good pick to cover the Vegas line (-1 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Miami favored by 9. Dunkel Pick: Miami (-1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
