    Six-Pack for Thursday

We're looking at a different major league team each day this month, as baseball season approaches. Today, we look at the Texas Rangers........

-- Rangers hit 77 less home runs last year than in 2005.

-- Texas hit 183 homers but had 357 doubles, most ever by Texas, and T6th all-time.

-- Rangers are 11th big league team for Kenny Lofton.

-- Vicente Padilla has hit 66 batters with pitches over last five years, most in MLB. Jeff Weaver (64) is next.

-- Brandon McCarthy gives up lot of fly balls; can he keep them in the park in Arlington?

-- Over last four years, Michael Young has hit .393 with two outs and runners in scoring position.

Thursday's list of 13: Random Thursday facts...............

      13) Houston Texans made big move Wednesday, trading 2nd round pick to Falcons for backup QB Matt Schaub, paving the way for David Carr to be traded. Interesting move........

      12) Falcons are also going to bigger offensive line and away from the Alex Gibbs/Broncos style/quicker line. It will take a while for them to accomplish that totally.

      11) Over last five years, 30 of 85 NFL overtime games ended on the first drive of OT (35.3%); from 1974-2001, only 27.4% of overtime games ended on the first drive. some folks would like to see the NFL guarantee both sides one possession in an overtime, which seems reasonable.

      10) Not like Peyton Manning needs more TV exposure, but he is hosting Saturday Night Live this week.

      9) Winona State (emphasis on WIN) brought its 55-game win streak into the national quarterfinals of Division II tourney in Springfield. Winona beat Bentley 64-51, in what was virtually a home game for Bentley, as 20 busloads of Falcon fans made the 83-mile ride from Waltham to Springfield.

      8) Red Sox will wear green uniforms on April 12, to honor Red Auerbach, the late coach/president of the Celtics.

      7) I had no idea the top-ranked college baseball team in whole country is at Vanderbilt. With Commodores in Sweet 16 and having top-ranked baseball team, will more colleges go to the Vanderbily model of not having formal athletic department?

      6) Red flag for Tampa Bay import Iwamura; an American who is pitching in Japan says he had little trouble getting Iwamura out because he busted him inside with fastballs, and not lot of Japanese pitchers do that. Uh-oh........

      5) I wonder how much money Red Sox have recouped already in apparel sales from the Matsuzaka signing?

      4) Appalachian State has basketball player named Ty Webb, whose parents must have been Caddyshack fans, as Chevy Chase's character in that classic movie was named Ty Webb.

      3) Dr Tom Davis is retiring from coaching after 32 years as a head coach, with a record of 598-355; his son Keno is Drake's new head coach.

      2) Princeton's Joe Scott, Iowa's Steve Alford are both leaving their job for lesser profile programs, after having subpar years in programs used to better. Both would have been squarely on the hot seat had they not changed jobs.

      1) Thad Matta's father coached ball in Hoopesville, IL, good place for a future basketball coach to grow up.

                    Thursday, March 22

                    NCAA Regional Semifinals

Kansas won its first two NCAA games 107-67/88-76; they made 23-38 from arc in two games, now face defensive wizards from Carbondale, who held Holy Cross, Va Tech to 33.3/41.3% from floor, 4-32 from arc. Jayhawks are athletic, have many options; #1 seeds are 18-3 SU last six years, 13-8 vs spread. Salukis are 14-1 in last 15 games; they're 5-2 vs spread as an underdog this season, with losses by 8ot,10,5,7,6 points. Kansas won its last thirteen games (9-4 vs spread). Southern Illinois lost to the two most athletic teams they played, Arkansas and Indiana.

Texas A&M should have crowd edge, unless Tennessee fans join up with Memphis people (they usually despise each other) in Alamodome. Dome setting doesn't favor teams that shoot lot of 3's; Memphis took 307 more treys than A&M; 35.5% of the shots Tigers took are 3's, compared to only 28.3% for Aggies. Memphis hasn't lost since Dec 20 at Arizona, last time they've been an underdog. Tigers beat Oklahoma of Big 12 in Maui on Nov 20, 77-65. A&M is 8-3 vs spread last 11 tries as favorite.

Pitt beat an 11 seed, 14 seed to get to this point., now they are way up in class vs UCLA and Howland, who coached Pitt and turned program around, before turning program over to Dixon. Pitt is 1-5 vs spread as underdog this season, failing to cover last three tries. Bruins won seven of last eight games, beating a 15,10 seed to get here; they are 7-5 vs pointspread as a favorite vs non-league foes. Four of last five games between 2-3 seeds in this round have been decided by four or less points.

Ohio State beat Tennessee 68-66 in Columbus Jan 13 (-10), the first game of Buckeyes' 19-game winning streak; Vols made 7 of 31 treys, not very good, but were +12 in turnovers (20-8) as the Buckeyes struggled with pressure. 40.7% of Tennessee's shots attempted this season have been 3's; they've made 865 treys, 147 more than Buckeyes, so dome setting favors OSU. 5 seeds are 8-5 vs spread in this round the last eight years. Vols only have one senior, so Buckeyes are actually more experienced.

                        UCLA vs. Pittsburgh
Pitt and UCLA are mirror images of each other, which is no surprise considering Ben Howland has employed the same grind-it-out style at both stops. The storyline of this game will be the familiarity between Howland and Pitt coach Jamie Dixon, as will the suffocating defense that each team plays. That should lead to another common denominator: lack of offense. UCLA managed just 54 points in a second-round win over Indiana; Pitt scored just 42 in losing to Georgetown in the Big East final. There doesn't look to be much pull-away strength in either team right now, which should help the underdog Panthers hang around, as will the presence of 7-footer Aaron Gray, who has averaged 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in the first two games of the tourney. This game will likely resemble a typical Big East affair making the Panthers a good underdog pick (+3 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Pittsburgh favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Pittsburgh (+3 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                          Denver at Chicago
Denver's winning ways at home carried over to the road as the Nuggets opened a five-game road trip with a 94-90 win at New Jersey on Tuesday. It was Denver's fifth straight win and more surprisingly their third game during the stretch in which they've allowed fewer than 100 points. The combination of solid defense with the high-scoring combo of Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson has been a winning formula for George Karl's team in recent weeks. The same can't be said for Chicago, which followed up a loss to league-worst Memphis (104-103) on Saturday with an ugly 103-89 home loss to the Clippers on Tuesday. The Nuggets look like a dangerous road underdog (+3 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Denver favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Denver (+3 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                            San Jose at Atlanta
The Thrashers are making a strong move in the East thanks to the acquisitions of Keith Tkachuk and Alexei Zhitnik, who have sparked Atlanta to a seven-game home winning streak. Tkachuk helped extend that streak with a game-winner in overtime against East-leading Buffalo (4-3) on Sunday. While the Thrashers passed that test, another tough one looms against San Jose tonight. The Sharks are coming off a 4-1 win over Chicago last night for their fifth win in six games and ninth straight contest with at least a point. San Jose has also benefited from the acquisition of Tkachuk's former St. Louis teammate, Bill Guerin, who has five goals and an assist in 11 games with the Sharks. A playoff-level matchup, the Sharks look like a good underdog pick according to Dunkel, which has San Jose favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: San Jose (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                              Good Morning Kaptain!

                              Thanks for the appreciation.

I do have to credit my partner "Udog" for making this a coordinated effort. We really like to have this information in one place to help figure out our prognostications in the games.

Together, we are trying to make it an even more timely and helpful thread.

Best of luck to you and all of the "trends and indexes" fans!
