  • WTF Are The Falcons Thinking??

Trading a great backup like Schaub and leaving it all in the hands of Vick?? WOW glad im not a DieHard Falcons fan!

The Houston Texans are close to acquiring Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons.

A trade for the highly regarded backup quarterback was expected to be announced Thursday, according to a person with knowledge of the deal who requested anonymity because the deal hadn't been completed.

The person did not disclose the details of the trade. The Houston Chronicle and the NFL Network said the Falcons will get second-round picks in 2007 and 2008 and that the teams will swap first-round picks this year, with Atlanta moving from 10th to eighth.

A call by the Associated Press to Texans general manager Rick Smith wasn't immediately returned Wednesday. Rich McKay, Atlanta's general manager, had no comment.

"Matt's a restricted free agent," McKay, chairman of the NFL's competition committee, said during a conference call with national reporters in preparation for next week's league meetings. "He's clearly entitled to visit every team. We've talked to a number of teams that have interest in Matt. That's all I'm going to say."

Houston television station KRIV reported on it's website that Schaub and agent Joby Branion arrived at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Wednesday.

"We have an agreement in place," Branion told KRIV. "I dealt with Rick Smith on Ahman Green a couple of weeks ago. That gave us a great deal of comfort heading into these discussions believing we could get something done and we did. It wasn't easy but I think both sides are comfortable with where we are."

Schaub, who has performed well in preseason games, has started two games in his three-year career and is 84-of-161 for 1,033 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions.

The acquisition of Schaub would make the possibility David Carr will remain with the team seem unlikely. Unhappy with Carr's performance, Houston tried to sign both Jeff Garcia and Patrick Ramsey before the two signed with other teams.

The Texans hoped that Carr, the first pick in the 2002 draft, would have a breakout year under the tutelage of first-year coach Gary Kubiak. Instead his inconsistency doomed the team to another losing season. He had two touchdown passes in the last 10 games, and finished with more interceptions (12) than TDs (11) for the first time since 2003.

He looked good early in the season, but soon regressed and had two of the worst performances in his career in the last third of the year. The worst moments included 32 yards passing in a win over Oakland and a career-high four interceptions in a loss to New England.

While most agree that Schaub has potential, it could be tough for him to move into a full-time starting role, especially with a team with protection issues like the Texans. A third-round pick in 2004, he hasn't started a game since 2005 and threw just 27 passes last season.

Houston also has quarterbacks Sage Rosenfels and Bradlee Van Pelt on its roster.

Honestly though, what has Schaub ever done? He rocks the preseason but that really means nothing. In his couple of starts replacing Vick he was very average. It's alot of potential basically but he was gone after this year. I thought the Falcons did well to get those draft picks!

Schaub has never been given the chance to do anything.. Thats the reason Atlanta will never win a Super Bowl.. Vick sucks as a QB and they need to realize it and should have given the starting roll to Schaub last year.. Imagine putting Vick in the same role as a Reggie Bush..

That may be true but Schaub has 6 picks and 6 td's in his career i think and again, he has done absolutely nothing outside of preseason so how do we or anybody really know how good he is? He was leaving as a free agent and Vick put the people in those seats (imo), not schaub. They received some nice picks there in return!

Dont worry, they have God, you know Bobby Petrino. So with all of his ultimate wisdom they will win it all

I really think if they could ever get Vick a top flight receiver and use their draft picks wisely, they could be next years New Orleans!

Vick will never win anything to inconsisant when you are relying on his legs and relative small an injury prone frame given what he has to do when he is successful. But paying schab big bucks as a bench guy makes no sense either. There are qbs out there on any given year to grab when the VICK experiment ends.

I am by no means a Vick fan but c'mon, has the guy ever had a good receiving core around him? He has had nothing but shit and a TE. I have seen quite a few Falcon games in the last couple of years and every single time i did, the one thing i couldn't believe were the dropped balls by Atlanta receivers. Time after time Vick would hit them right in the hands and they dropped ball after ball after ball. Any Atlanta fan out there has to know what i'm talking about here. Alot of guys have yet to win the big one and some greats like Marino never did. I think that Vick could have a GREAT year under Petrino IF they get him some dame receivers who can catch the ball!!!
