TORONTO -- Rookie Toronto Raptors forward Andrea Bargnani underwent an emergency appendectomy on Wednesday morning and no timetable has been set for his return, the team said.

Bargnani is expected to be released from the hospital in the next few days.

According to Italian media reports, Bargnani, 21, became ill after practice Tuesday and had the surgery overnight.

"He's just waking up right now, but everything is fine. He seems to be doing well," Toronto assistant general manager Maurizio Gherardini said Wednesday morning from Mount Sinai Hospital.

Bargnani, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 NBA draft, is averaging 11.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game for the Atlantic Division-leading Raptors.

Bargnani and Portland's Brandon Roy are considered the top candidates for rookie of the year. Bargnani is coming off Eastern Conference rookie of the month honors for February, when he averaged 13.5 points on 50 percent shooting.

Nevertheless, be careful if you go against the raptors, their roster this year has lots of depth. I would keep an eye on whether Calderon and Parker come back (which they both should), and then consider. I don't know why but after that dismal game against the Knicks, I think the Raptors might shoot the lights out at the ACC (seeing how they're amazing at home this year). Over 100 points from the Raps I would hope, give those fans some free pizza!

I'm on the Raptors. Nelson is questionable for the Magic, a much bigger lose than Bargnani if he can't go.

From what I read Calderon is probable and Parker is out

Looks like a possibility of a Jose Calderon return and perhaps another night off for Anthony Parker tonight.
Calderon, who sprained his ankle last Wednesday against the New York Knicks, has sat out the past two games but was feeling a little better yesterday.
"It's getting better but we'll see how it is today," Calderon said. "I wanted to play two games ago so for me there's always a chance I will play, but I don't know how I'll feel when I wake up (today). I can't be sure."
Calderon said he felt discomfort when he pushed off hard or tried to go side to side and was hoping that would subside by today.
Parker was still a little sore yesterday after suffering a little setback with his own sprained ankle in practice on Monday. Parker played in Sunday's loss in New York but certainly was not at full strength or mobility.
Of the two, Mitchell said his gut was telling him Calderon was more likely to play today.
