    Six-Pack for Wednesday

-- Former Saint backup QB McPherson, injured by golf cart driven by Titans' mascot last summer, is now the QB for the Austin Wranglers in the Arena League.

-- What does it say about Colorado basketball that Ricardo Patton left Boulder to coach at Northern Illinois?

-- Jake Plummer has to reimburse the Buccaneers $7M if he stays retired.

-- Saints now have a waiting list of 20,000 for season tickets.

-- Saw one of greatest basketball games I've ever seen when Concordia beat Robert Morris 124-119 in four overtimes on Monday, in national semifinals of the NAIA tournament.

-- Not only did Concordia win, they hit game-tying shots in regulation, and first three overtimes. If this had been in the Division I tournament, it would have been the most famous game of all time. Tremendous drama.

Wednesday's list of 13: My favorite college hoop announcers

With the amount of college basketball I watched this season, figured I am qualified to discuss which announcers are ones I like to listen to the best. I'm not going to rip anyone; anyone I hit the mute button for doesn't get discussed here........

      Play-by-play guys
-- Brad Nessler-- To me, play-by-play guys are point guards of the broadcast; its not about them, its about them making the broadcast the center of attention, and setting up analyst to make his points. To me, Nessler is far and away the best.

-- Dick Enberg-- Every play-by-play guy should listen to his tapes, his enthusiasm, and selflessness. A real Hall of Famer.

-- Terry Gannon-- Only ex-player on play-by-play list; he fits in well with whatever analyst they give him. Makes staying up for the midnight games little bit better.

-- Steve Physioc-- Does Pac-10 and Angel games, so listen to him year-round, basically. Despite his busy schedule, has lot of enthusiasm, and defers to his analyst.

-- Sean McDonough-- Seems to get shaft from ESPN, but he is terrific play-by-play guy, no matter what sport he does.

-- Brent Musberger-- Still belongs in an NFL studio show.

      Analysts
-- Pete Gillen-- Works for CSTV, so isn't heard much, but he is like listening to a second generation Al McGuire; talks mile a minute, is funny, discusses strategy, always fun to listen to.

-- Jimmy Dykes-- Has worked his way from a midnight slot to the SEC game on Tuesdays; speaks his mind more than most, is highly opinionated and very enthusiastic.

-- Bill Raftery-- Almost has his own language now, with all is catch phrases. His love of the game is obvious; he and Verne Lundquist are excellent team on NCAAs.

-- Marques Johnson-- Works Pac-10 games with Physioc; has great sense of humor. Is like watching game with one of your buddies. You'd never know he was such a terrific player.

-- Steve Lavin-- You get idea Lavin will never coach again; he seems to like broadcasting too much. His dad is a high school coach; some of that comes through when Lavin loosens up, usually late in season. Has a Raftery-like lingo.

-- Steven Bardo-- Former Illinois player emerged on late night broadcasts this season; sounds lot like Brad Daugherty, and isn't afraid to speak mind, when he ripped idea of expanding NCAA tournament. A future star.

-- Bob Valvano-- Underused by ESPN. Has knack for making you understand game better. Isn't funny like his brother was, but he is likeable, studies game, and spreads his knowledge.

        NIT Quarterfinals
Winners in this round advance to semifinals in New York City.

Clemson won four of last five games; they won first two games in NIT, by 7,21 pts. Syracuse won eight of last ten games; they were 4-4 on Big East road, 4-3-1 vs spread as underdog. This is their first true road game vs non-league foe. Clemson is 16-0 vs non-ACC opponents; this is first game vs Big East team in '07, just as it is first ACC opponent for Syracuse. Tigers are 2-5 vs spread in last seven tries as a favorite.

Air Force is better off when facing team that doesn't see them much; DePaul won tough game at Kansas State Tuesday, now heads out to Colorado Springs for quick turnaround game with Air Force, whose offense is hard to prepare for. DePaul is 7-2 in last nine games, but Tuesday was their first cover as underdog in last six tries. Air Force is 7-1 vs spread as favorite outside of Mountain West; they were 4-10 as favorite in conference.

                  WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21

                  Syracuse at Clemson
Few teams played better than Syracuse down the stretch with a 6-1 record in February, including beating Georgetown for the Hoya's only loss in 21 games. A snub by the NCAA selection committee may have been partially responsible for a lackluster performance against South Alabama in the first round of the NIT, but the Orange turned it up a notch with an 80-64 win over San Diego State on Monday. Syracuse showed that it didn't need a big-scoring game out of Eric Devendorf (eight points) to get the win as Demetris Nichols (20), Andy Rautins (15) and Paul Harris (12) all scored in double digits. That balanced attack should pose problems for Clemson tonight. The Tigers are turning around a disappointing finish that saw them lose 10 of their last 14 to miss the NCAAs. A blowout win over Ole Miss (89-68) on Monday looks to have brought back some of the early-season confidence in Oliver Purnell's team. But it's doubtful Clemson will be able to shake the more-experienced Orange as easily, making Syracuse a good underdog pick (+4) according to Dunkel, which has the Orange favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Syracuse (+4). Here are all of today's games.

                  Game 617-618: Syracuse at Clemson
Dunkel Ratings: Syracuse 69.908; Clemson 68.724
                  Dunkel Line: Syracuse by 1
                  Vegas Line: Clemson by 4

                    WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21

                    Dallas at Cleveland
Perhaps the Cavs were looking ahead to tonight's matchup as they stumbled against lower-rated Charlotte last night. The surprising overtime loss (108-100) snapped Cleveland's eight-game winning streak that saw the Cavs dominate the opposition by an average of 12.6 points per game. They will need a much better performance to have a chance against the Mavericks, who have won three straight after back-to-back losses for the first time since they started the season 0-4. Going home should help the Cavaliers, who have won six straight at Quicken Loans Arena, including wins over two of the Western Conference's better teams (Utah and Houston). And LeBron James has played well against Dallas, averaging 39.5 points in his last four games against the Mavs, including 39 on the road in their last meeting on March 1 (a close 95-92 Dallas win). The Cavs should give Dallas a fight and look like a good home underdog pick (+3) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Cleveland favored straight up by 3. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (+3). Here are all of today's games.

                      WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21

                      Dallas at Los Angeles
While the Kings are out of the playoff picture, they showed some fight in knocking off Anaheim (5-3) on Sunday night to hand the Ducks their first loss after going 6-0-1 in their eight-game homestand. Los Angeles has climbed out of last place in the West with a 5-2-4 run in their last 11 games. Dallas comes in having dominated the Kings this season by winning all seven meetings and outscoring L.A. 26-14. But the improved play of L.A. could pose a problem for the Stars on the road tonight and makes the Kings a decent underdog pick according to Dunkel, which has Los Angeles favored straight up by 1/2 a goal. Dunkel Pick: Los Angeles (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
