    Six-Pack for Saturday

We're looking at all thirty big league teams during spring training; today, we look at the Pittsburgh Pirates.

-- Pirates were 15-4 in one-run games after All Star break.

-- Paul Maholm allowed 15.1 runners per nine innings last season, not very good.

-- Pirates were 43-38 at home last year, their first winning record at PNC Park.

    -- Normally-steady Jack Wilson had career-high 18 errors in 2006.

-- Mike Gonzalez was 24-24 in saves, so of course, Pirates traded him for Adam Laroche.

-- Pirates have won 25 batting titles, more than any team.

Friday night's list of 13: Tournament observations.......

      13) This is first time since '85 that there will be four games in second round matching 2-7 seeds; there has always been at least one upset involving those teams, but not this year.

      12) Watching Arizona all season, it seems like Lute Olson, at times, actually has to plead with his team to play hard. This is never a good thing, especially with fairly veteran team. They are getting totally outhustled by Purdue tonight.

      11) I wonder how many fish Bob Knight caught today.

      10) Top ten players for New Mexico State all transferred from a junior college or another D-I school; they have only a pair of freshmen, and one of them is Reggie Theus' cousin.

      9) If you're the AD at New Mexico State, start drawing up a list of coaching candidates, because Theus is going to be scooped up by one of the big boys very, very soon.

      8) Three of four early games tonight are excellent; Kansas is just killing Niagara, whose best player was tired 2:00 after the game started. Sometimes I'd just like to kick myself, and not having the over in this game is one of those times.

      7) Virginia Tech's team went through hell last year, with lot of off-court, family/illness issues; tonight, they got some joy, as they outscore Illinois 12-0 in last 4:25 to hand Illinois as bitter a defeat as you can imagine. Illini missed front end of 1-and-1 with :04.9 left. Very difficult loss to stomach.

      6) Big 11 teams aren't as talented as some teams in the other leagues, but by golly, they're tougher than most teams, and the way NCAA games are officiated (not many touch fouls), this gives them an advantage, at least I think it does. Except for Illinois; they topped 61 points twice in their last 14 games.

      5) Do you think Ian Eagle was rooting for Winthrop's Eagles?

      4) Good lord, Kentucky had to start a seldom-used freshman, because an assistant coach checked the wrong starter in the scorebook. UK gave a foul in first :02, got right kid in game. Confusion was because two kids have same last name. It is good for Tubby that Kentucky won another 1st round game.

      3) Does Arkansas making tournament, but getting waxed by USC, take heat off Stan Heath? Hogs didn't play very well at all, and now Texas-USC meet Sunday.

      2) Southern Illinois really grinds out wins; they defend very well, but they struggle on offense; health of Shaw (ankle) is important for their game vs Hokies Sunday.

      1) Final tally for the first round: favorites were 23-9 vs spread; only two seeds 10 or lower are still alive (Winthrop and VCU, a pair of 11 seeds). Over/unders split at 16-16.

        NIT

Mississippi State had extra day to prepare after easy win over Mississippi Valley; they've won last five home games, by 7,24, 13,24,19 points. Bradley had OT win vs Providence, a lot better foe, thanks to 10 missed Friar FTs. Braves won five of their last seven games; they depend lot on shooting 3's, and are 4-3 last seven road games. State is 10-5 as a favorite this season.

        NCAA First Round
        Saturday

#1 seeds are 8-0 SU in second round last two years (5-3 against spread); Matta came to Columbus from Xavier, so Musketeers know him well, as does former assistant Miller. Xavier is 10-1 in last 11 games; they beat Illinois 65-59 and lost only one game in whole season by more than eight pts; they're 0-1 as underdog this year, losing 63-56 vs Alabama on neutral court (+2). OSU is on 17-game win streak; they covered four of last five games. X will try to speed up game; tough to score in halfcourt vs OSU.

Butler has beaten Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame, Gonzaga so far this season; they're not awed by names, but Maryland has won eight of last nine games, covering eight of last ten as favorites. Bulldogs held Old Dominion to 32.7% from floor, going on late 17-0 run to break open close game. Young Davidson squad was 10-37 from arc Thursday, but Curry did score 30. since '99, dogs are 10-4 vs spread in second round games between 4-5 seeds. Maryland is 10th in country in pace, Butler 329th; Bulldogs led country in taking care of ball, so they control tempo.

Louisville is 78 miles from Rupp Arena, so home game for UofL squad whose coach won national title for Kentucky. Aggies are in odd spot; they win here, they go home to Texas, and they'll be home side in San Antonio next week. Cardinal playing very well, winning eight of last nine games; they crushed Stanford in first round, forcing 21 turnovers in game they led by 26 at half. A&M is much tougher team with best PG in country; they were 6-2 on road in Big 12 this season, losing in double OT at Texas, by hoop in Lubbock. Last three years, dogs are 7-1 vs spread in second round games involving 3-6 seeds.

Vanderbilt held George Washington to 27% in first round game they led by 25 at half; Commodores are just 3-3 in last six games are 7-3 vs spread in last 10 tries as underdog. Washington St is 4-3 in last seven games. Both teams take great care of ball, are intelligent squads. Again, over last three years, dogs are 7-1 vs spread in second round games involving 3-6 seeds. Vanderbilt wants faster game (Wazzu ranks 322nd in pace); does having easier game in first round make it harder to bear down in 2nd?

Over last three years, 2-seeds are just 4-8 vs spread in second round games. Georgetown is on roll, winning 16 of last 17 and last five in row. Neither team forces turnovers or likes fast pace; BC is just 3-5 in last eight games after beating Texas Tech in its first round game. These teams are former Big East rivals; BC is 0-1 vs Big East this year, losing 73-64 to Providence. Hoyas are 0-1 vs ACC, losing 61-52 at Duke- that was before current roll. BC is 30th in country in % of points scored on foul shots; we'll see if that hurts them here, as refs call less fouls in NCAAs.

VCU won seven games in row, 20 of last 22 games; the former Rutgers coach Wenzel called Rams best pressing team he has seen this season. VCU hit 9-16 treys in come-from-behind win vs Duke, now they need to beat better team, Pitt, who crushed Wright State Thursday, making 10-21 treys when Raiders tried to sag down and double Gray in post. VCU has better figures on forcing turnovers and protecting ball; that has been a good indicator for second round upsets last three years. Problem is, #11 seeds are 4-15 vs spread in second round last twenty yrs.

UCLA crushed Weber State in first round, making 10-19 treys but only 6-9 from foul line; underdg is 6-4 vs spread in second round 2-7 matchups over last four years. Both these teams lost first round conference tourney game. Indiana held Gonzaga to 33.9% from floor Thursday. Sampson was 3-2 in second round games at Oklahoma; he covered last three tries as tourney dog (all in '99). Bruins are 2-5 vs spread in last seven tries as a fave. Hoosiers are 3-3-1 vs spread as an underdog this season.

Izzo won his last six second round games, winning last four by double digit margins, but he is without Ibok (elbow) here. State beat Marquette so easily primarily because McNeal didn't play for Eagles. Carolina shot 64% from floor vs outmanned EKU in first round; Carolina is 2-4 in last six tries in this round. MSU is 0-2 vs ACC this season, scoring 59 ppg in losses to Boston College, Maryland. UNC beat Big 11's Ohio State back in fall. UNC beat Spartans 87-71 in '05 national semifinals (-5).

                      Louisville vs. Texas A&M
Louisville shook off its loss to Pitt in the Big East tournament with a convincing win over Stanford (78-58) in the first round of the NCAAs. Rick Pitino's team used its trademark trapping and pressing defense to force the Cardinal into 21 turnovers as Louisville dominated from the opening tip. Playing just 80 miles from campus at Rupp Arena certainly didn't hurt, either. A&M finished with a 16-point win over Penn (68-52), but the win was not as easy. The Quakers opened the second half with a 21-6 run and took the lead with 11 minutes remaining before A&M used its size and Acie Law to put them away. That won't be so easy for the Aggies against a Louisville team that has won eight of its last nine by an average margin of 14 points. Louisville looks like a good underdog pick (+3) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Cardinals favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Louisville (+3). Here are all of today's games.

                            Golden State at Seattle
With Baron Davis back in the lineup after missing 13 games with a knee injury, Golden State has won five of its last six to move into the eighth playoff spot in the West just ahead of the Clippers. While the team still ranks last in the NBA in points allowed (106.6 ppg), the defense has been better of late as the Warriors have held their opponents to an average of 95.4 points over the last five games, including just 86 against Minnesota in a 20-point win on Friday. Seattle has dropped four straight overall and six of its last eight against the Warriors. Golden State looks like a good underdog pick (+4 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Warriors favored straight up by 3 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Golden State (+4 1/2).
