    Six-Pack for Friday

We're looking at all thirty big league teams during spring training; today, we look at the Cincinnati Reds.

-- Reds used 140 different lineups last season.

-- 24 guys played for the Reds last year who weren't with Cincinnati before GM Krivsky was hired February 8.

-- Trading for Kirk Saarloos isn't going to help. Trust me.

-- Backup IF Juan Castro has lowest OB% of active players with 2,000+ plate appearances, with a .272 mark.

-- Reds grabbed Josh Hamilton away from Devil Rays as a Rule 5 pick; Hamilton was once top pick in draft, but he has struggled with substance issues, and has played only few games as high as AA, but he's hitting .500 this spring.

-- Odd thing is Reds took Hamilton without knowing Jerry Narron's brother coached Hamilton in youth ball. They then signed the other Narron as a video coordinator.

      NIT

Marist won 67-64 at Oklahoma State, holding onto 37-26 lead at the half, now they visit red-hot NC State club that won four of last five games, but is playing its sixth game in nine days. State isn't very deep, but they won in tough Drexel gym Tuesday, so they keep playing. Marist won eight of their last nine games. Red Foxes are 2-2 vs spread as an underdog this season.

      NCAA First Round
      Friday

Virginia's excellent backcourt gets tested by Jamar Wilson, who was America East Player of Year last two years; Cavaliers lost last four games away from home, are 3-4 in its last seven games SU, and are no lock here vs an Albany squad that led UConn by 11 with 11:30 left in first round in '06. #4 seed in South is 2-5 vs spread in last seven first round tilts. Virginia is 0-4 vs spread as non-conference favorite this season.

UNLV won last seven games and has #10 RPI, but they trailed in MWC final 16-3, before rallying on home court for win; they are more veteran team than Georgia Tech squad- Jackets' best two players are freshmen. Rebels like to shoot 3's; Tech is not great defending the trey, ranking 232nd in country in percent of points allowed behind arc. Jackets are 3-3 in their last six games Wake Forest shot 16-23 from arc against them in ACC tourney.

North Texas coach Jones was interim coach at Memphis before Tigers hired Calipari; he is former Louisiana high school legend and LSU star-- this game is in New Orleans. Memphis is loaded with young talent; they've won 23 games in row- they beat Sun Belt's Middle Tennessee by 40 in December. North Texas won seven of last eight games; they had to win four times in the Sun Belt tourney to get here. Both sides rank in top 70 in pace.

I've been saying since Thanksgiving that Winthrop would win an NCAA game, so time to put my money where my mouth is. . Eagles lost in OT to Wisconsin, lost 73-66 to North Carolina, they went thru their conference undefeated. Notre Dame is 4-6 in last ten road games- they've lost at St John's, South Florida, DePaul. This is Super Bowl for Winthrop program. Notre Dame can score, but they're 4-8 vs spread in last dozen as a favorite.

Long Beach State plays eight seniors; its coach doesn't have a contract for next year, but they play without fear, outscoring its foes by eight points a game in second half. Tennessee lost first game in SEC tourney; they barely beat a 15 seed in first round last year. Vols have only one senior on squad. They posted a total of 170, as both teams rank in top 25 in pace. Nixon is back home; 49ers' best player is from Cleveland. Tennessee thrives on outrunning foes; they won't outrun Long Beach State.

Higher seed is 12-0 SU in Wisconsin's NCAA games under Bo Ryan; Badgers haven't been as good since Butch dislocated an elbow, but he is back practicing and could play next weekend. Corpus Christi didn't have a team nine years ago; they gave up 22 offensive rebounds in Southland final last week, so Badgers figure to dominate glass with physical play. Wisconsin is 5-2-1 vs spread in last eight games as a favorite.

Creighton is just 7-5 outside of Missouri Valley; they're 10-2 in last dozen games, beating nemesis Southern Illinois in finals of MVC tourney. Nevada lost twice to Utah State in its last four games; they need Shiloh (hamstring) healthy to move on here. Wolf Pack is 12-1 outside of WAC, losing to UNLV; they beat Akron, Gonzaga, Santa Clara and also swept WAC road trip in star Fazekas' absence, beating Hawai'i in OT without Fazekas.

Oregon won last six games, last four all by 18+ points; their set of guards will force fast tempo vs Miami club that ranks 331st out of 336 teams in pace of game. MAC teams are 0-3 in NCAA last three years, losing by 13,5,15 points. Miami is just 5-8 out of MAC this year; they were 3-3 in last six games before their run to MAC tourney title. Pacific Northwest site favors Ducks. Oregon covered last three as favorite, after 0-8 skid as favorite.

Illinois is 8-3 in last eleven games; they're 12-3 outside of Big 11 losing 72-66 to Maryland of ACC, team Hokies beat in OT back on Jan 21. Hokies are tough to figure; they beat North Carolina twice, but went 0-3 vs NC State, and were 1-3 in last four games overall. Both teams rank low in pace (Illini 301, Tech 258); so it would figure to be low-scoring affair. Illinois scored 61 or less points in 11 of last 13 games. Tech won last 11 times they gave up less than 69 points.

Niagara lost by 17 to Oklahoma of Big 12 in this round couple years ago; here they face Kansas squad that lost in first round last two years, so they won't take this lightly. Both teams play at fast tempo (Niagara 70, Kansas 63) but Jayhawks rank #1 in defense, Eagles 240th, so Kansas should light scoreboard up. Niagara won last 12 games, but would be concerned about their conditioning, vs very deep Kansas squad that runs all day.

Arizona ranks 332nd in country in forcing turnovers; they're 2-6 in first round under Olson when a 4 seed or lower; they scored 50 points in losing their first round game to Oregon last week in Pac-10 tourney. Purdue is 11-3 outside of Big 11, 4-5-2 against spread as underdog; they won four of last five games, covered eight of last 10. Boilers got a 9 seed, so committee thought lot of them. Arizona sub Dillon got DUI Sunday, won't play here.

New Mexico State is here because they won WAC tourney on their home court, when top seed got beat by someone else in semis; in other words, they don't belong here. Aggies are 5-3 vs spread as dog this year; they Texas starts four freshmen, so you always wonder about such a young team; they do have Superman on their side; they're 3-6-1 vs spread in last ten tries as fave. Aggies rank 42nd in pace, so they'll run with Texas.

Patriot League teams covered their last five first round games; Bucknell won first round games the last two years-- Willard is 3-0 vs spread with Holy Cross, losing by 11,4,4 pts. Southern Illinois won 11 of last 12 games, with wins at Butler, Missouri State, Wichita, but they covered only one of last five as a fave. Total is 108.5; the Crusaders rank 294th in pace, Salukis 315th. Southern Illinois is 6-2 in last eight tries as a favorite.

Kentucky won last 16 first round games, last losing to Ohio St in '87; they've usually been higher than an 8 seed, but they did beat UAB last year as 8 seed. This is first year since '74 that UK hasn't beaten a ranked team; they're 3-6 in last nine games, and facing constant questions about Smith's job ststus. Nardi's foot is problem for Villanova, which lost in regional final last season Villanova lost 62-57 to Georgetown in Big East tourney, in game they trailed 22-2 at one point.

Jackson State has one of nation's best scorers in Trey Johnson, but Florida has whole team back from squad that won national title last year; they allow only 61.7 ppg, holding teams to 29.4% beyond arc. JSU plays fast, ranking 39th in pace. Gators aren't real deep; not sure status of Horford's knee after he got rolled up on during Arkansas game Sunday. Florida is 4-0 vs spread in March, winning by 13,17,21,21 pts. If you look at the power rankings, Jackson State should have been in play-in game.

Arkansas was 11-3 outside of SEC, with only near-quality wins over NIT teams, West Virginia and Marist; they lost to Texas, Texas Tech and Missouri. Hogs won five of last six games, lost in SEC finals; their two wins vs Vandy got them in here. USC was down 38 in Pac-10 final vs Oregon; Trojans are 2-4 in last six games away from home, but were 10-3 outside of the Pac-10; they lost in OT to South Carolina at home. Mixed signals on the Pac-10 after Washington State/Stanford split Thursday.

        Friday, March 16

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Chicago, Illinois

Midwest - #7 UNLV vs. #10 Georgia Tech (12:25 PM ET)
The Rebels have an assortment of scoring options - so early foul trouble doesn't hinder this team as much as others. Senior point-guard Kevin Kruger led the Mountain West Conference in assists and is the teams most dangerous shooter. EDGE: UNLV
Being away from home is certainly a concern for Georgia Tech, as the Yellow Jackets were a dismal 1-8 in true road games this year, which will still be a factor even on a neutral court. EDGE: UNLV
UNLV advanced to four Final Fours and won the 1990 national title under Jerry Tarkanian but hasn’t wont a single NCAA tournament game since they ran him out after the 1991-92 season. SLIGHT EDGE: GEORGIA TECH
The Yellow Jackets are 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral site games as favorites.
The Rebels are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games underdogs.
The UNDER is 9-1-1 in the Runnin' Rebels' last 11 games as underdogs.

        Midwest - #2 Wisconsin vs. #15 Texas A&M-CC (2:55 PM ET)
With two-year starter Brian Butch out for at least the first two weekends with a dislocated right elbow, Wisconsin is still adjusting. The Badgers are far from automatic on the free-throw line and behind the arc. EDGE: TEXAS A&M-CC
Texas A&M-CC center Chris Daniels averaged 15.3 points and 6.7 rebounds to become the Southland Conference Player of the Year award. He's a 7-footer with an outside touch and opposing teams must design a defense to stop him. EDGE: TEXAS A&M-CC
The Badgers are 0-4 ATS in their last four games after scoring less than 50 points in their previous game.
The UNDER is 5-1 in the Badgers' last six games as favorites of 13 points or greater.

West - #1 Kansas vs. #16 Niagara (7:10 PM ET)
The Kansas Jayhawks certainly look formidable as a No. 1 seed in the West region, but any team can claim as many wins as the Jayhawks in the past two NCAA tournaments. The Jayhawks were bounced by Bucknell and Bradley the last two years. EDGE: NIAGARA
Niagara got a surprise performance from Clif Brown in Tuesday's play-in game, as he connected on a career-high six 3-pointers en route to 32 points in a 77-69 win over Florida A&M. Brown stepped up with 24 points in the second half alone after scoring 18 or less in his previous 11 games while leading scorer Charron Fisher battled foul trouble and totaled just 13 points. EDGE: NIAGARA

West - #8 Kentucky vs. #9 Villanova (9:40 PM ET)
If Villanova leads late in games, it's hard to beat them. The Wildcats shot a Big East-best 78.4 percent from the free-throw line during the regular season. BIG EDGE: VILLANOVA
Kentucky has lost only one first round game with Tubby Smith as head coach – versus Georgia in 1998. EDGE: KENTUCKY
Villanova is 0-4 ATS in its last four NCAA Tournament games.
Kentucky is 8-0-1 ATS in its last nine games versus the Big East.

        Columbus, Ohio

West - #5 Virginia Tech vs. #12 Illinois (7:10 PM ET)
The Hokies have great depth with nine players averaging at least 10 minutes per game, led by senior guards Zabian Dowdell and Jamon Gordon. EDGE: VIRGINIA TECH
Illinois has just nine scholarship players at their disposal and only eight that actually play. The Fighting Illini lack depth and the ability to mix-and-match with versatile opponents
The Fighting Illini are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 neutral site games.
The UNDER is 11-0 in the Fighting Illini's last 11 Friday games.

West - #4 Southern Illinois vs. #13 Holy Cross (9:40 PM ET)
Holy Cross head coach Ralph Willard's coaching style gives the Crusaders a chance to win any game. The Crusaders force 16.9 turnovers per game and knock down free throws, which has led them to 18 of 20 games to capture a fourth Patriot League title in seven years. EDGE: HOLY CROSS
The Patriot League champion (Bucknell) has won first-round games over Kansas and Arkansas each of the last two years. EDGE: HOLY CROSS
The best way to beat Southern Illinois’ man-to-man halfcourt defense is to run against them. However, Holy Cross puts a lot of emphasis on slowing the game down, ranking seventh in the country in team defense with 57.4 points allowed per game. EDGE: UNDER
The Patriot League champion has won first-round games each of the last two years. EDGE: HOLY CROSS
The Crusaders are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games as underdogs.
The Salukis are 2-9-1 ATS in their last 12 games as favorites.

South - #4 Virginia vs. #13 Albany (12:15 PM ET)
Virginia has a great backcourt with guards Sean Singletary and J.R. Reynolds but could have big problems matching up with an opponent with any kind of size. Fortunately for the Cavs in this round, Albany doesn't have much size. EDGE: VIRGINIA
The Great Danes are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.
The Cavaliers are 0-11 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games as a favorite.

South - #5 Tennessee vs. #12 Long Beach State (2:45 PM ET)
Long Beach State coach Larry Reynolds is in a unique situation, as he doesn’t have a contract beyond this season and could be out as head coach. His team won the Big West though and could be a dangerous No. 12 seed. SLIGHT EDGE: LONG BEACH STATE
The 49ers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The Volunteers are 1-7 ATS in their last eight neutral site games as a favorite.

        New Orleans, Louisiana

Midwest - #8 Arizona vs. #9 Purdue (7:20 PM ET)
Arizona thrives in a fast-paced game with three go-to guys in Ivan Radenovic, Marcus Williams and Chase Budinger. The Wildcats also have a very capable point guard in senior Mustafa Shakur. EDGE: ARIZONA
More than most Big Ten teams, the Boilermakers had a huge split between their home and away performances. Purdue went almost three years without a victory on an opponent's court before beating Penn State 69-59 on February 3rd. EDGE: ARIZONA
Arizona seemed to lack interest in the Pac-10 Tournament, but this team has what experts believe to be four future NBA players on its roster. EDGE: ARIZONA
The Boilermakers are 0-4 ATS in their last four games versus the Pac-10.
The Wildcats are 6-0 ATS in their last six NCAA Tournament games.
The OVER is 4-0 in the Wildcats' last four NCAA Tournament games.

Midwest - #1 Florida vs. #16 Jackson State (9:50 PM ET)
With all five starters plus two key reserves back from last year's NCAA championship team, the Gators have plenty of tournament experience. They shoot better than 50 percent from the field overall and 40 percent on threes. EDGE: FLORIDA
The biggest obstacle for Florida is falling behind early or coming out flat, which is definitely a possibility during six possible games in the tournament. The Gators averaged two more turnovers a game more than their 16 SEC opponents. EDGE: JACKSON STATE
Jackson State will go only as far as Trey Johnson wants to take them, as he averages 27.1 points per game - making him the second-leading scorer in the country. EDGE: JACKSON STATE
The Gators are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games as favorites.
The UNDER is 9-2 in the Gators' last 11 NCAA Tournament games as favorites.

South - #2 Memphis vs. #15 North Texas (12:30 PM ET)
Memphis is riding a 22-game winning streak - the longest in the nation - but lacks respect as a member of Conference USA. The Tigers have just three victories against the tourney field (Kentucky, Gonzaga and Jackson State). SLIGHT EDGE: MEMPHIS
The Mean Green Eagles are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 neutral site games.
The Tigers are 1-4 ATS in their last five games as favorites of 13 points or greater.

South - #7 Nevada vs. #10 Creighton (3 PM ET)
The Blue Jays are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 games as underdogs.
The OVER is 18-4 in the Wolf Pack's last 22 games as favorites of 0.5-6.5 points.

        Spokane, Washington

Midwest - #6 Notre Dame vs. #11 Winthrop (2:35 PM ET)
The Eagles rely on three seniors - including big man Craig Bradshaw - and two juniors among its top six players. Bradshaw was Winthrop's most dominant plyer down the stretch, averaging 15.1 points and 7.3 rebounds during the conference season. All six have played in at least two NCAA Tournament games. EDGE: WINTHROP
Winthrop has four losses this season: North Carolina, Maryland, Wisconsin and Texas A&M. The only thing holding the Eagles back is head coach Greg Marshall’s 0-6 record in the dance. SLIGHT EDGE: WINTHROP
The Eagles are 7-0 ATS in their last seven neutral site games.
The Fighting Irish are 4-0 ATS in their last four neutral site games.
The OVER is 13-3-1 in the Fighting Irish's last 17 non-conference games.

        Midwest - #3 Oregon vs. #14 Miami-Ohio (5:05 PM ET)
The Ducks are an explosive offensive team with Pac-10 leading scorer Aaron Brooks leading the way. They can score points in bunches, which makes opposing coaches try to slow down the pace. EDGE: OREGON
The RedHawks play a Princeton-style offense, which is something that has been successful in March before. They like to slow down the tempo and use the shot clock. Miami will try to grind out victories due to lack of depth on the bench. EDGE: OREGON
Oregon guard Bryce Taylor is coming into this tournament with some serious steam, scoring 32 points after a perfect game in the Ducks’ Pac-10 tourney final over USC – going 11-for-11, 7-of-7 on 3s, 3-of-3 at the line. EDGE: OREGON
The Redhawks are 5-0 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
The Ducks are 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven neutral site games.

East - #4 Texas vs. #13 New Mexico State (7:25 PM ET)
The Aggies are 20-7 ATS in their last 27 games as an underdog.
The Longhorns are 1-5 ATS in their last six NCAA Tournament games as a favorite.

East - #5 USC vs. #12 Arkansas (9:55 PM ET)
USC head coach Tim Floyd hasn’t been to the tournament in more than a decade. Only one Floyd-coached team has lost to a lower-seeded team. On the other end, only one of his teams’ has ever beaten a higher seed. EDGE: USC
The Razorbacks are 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 neutral site games as underdogs.
The Trojans are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games following a SU loss.

                          LA Clippers at Charlotte
Despite an injury that has kept Emeka Okafor out of the lineup, the Bobcats have been able to beat a pair of struggling teams in Orlando (119-108) and Sacramento (111-108) at home in their last two games. The Bobcats averaged 115.0 points in those games, while shooting 50.9 percent from the field overall and 61.9 percent from 3-point range. Charlotte will try to continue that trend tonight against a Clipper team that has lost five straight overall and nine of its last 10 road games. LA's last win away from home came against Philadelphia back on Feb. 9 and only three teams have fewer road victories than the Clippers (8). The Bobcats look like a good home underdog (+2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Charlotte favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Charlotte (+2). Here are all of today's games.

                            Creighton vs. Nevada
Despite cruising through the WAC and winning the regular season title for the third straight season, Nevada stumbled in the conference tourney with a 79-77 loss to Utah State. Creighton, meanwhile, played some of its best basketball in beating Indiana State, Missouri State and Southern Illinois to win the Missouri Valley tournament. As goes senior guard Nate Funk (team-high 17.5 ppg) so go the Blue Jays, and Funk is at the top of his game right now. Creighton looks like a good underdog pick (+1) according to Dunkel, which has the Blue Jays favored straight up by 4 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Creighton (+1).
