    Six-Pack for Monday

I'll be looking at all thirty big league teams this spring; we look at the Los Angeles Dodgers today...........

-- Dodgers hit .293 at home with 88 homers; on road, LA hit .260 with only 65 big flies.

-- Los Angeles was just 8-30 last season against teams that made playoffs, 19-38 against teams with winning record.

-- From 2003-2006, Juan Pierre has 195 infield hits, more than anyone else in majors. Ichiro Suzuki is second with 177.

-- LA starting pitchers averaged just 5.1 innings per start, with one complete game. Enter Jason Schmidt.

-- Dodgers had seven rookies on the playoff roster in '06.

-- Grady Little has best winning percentage of any of active managers in big leagues, with 276-210 mark (.568).

Monday's List of 13: Initial thoughts on the brackets........

As week goes on, we'll have more in-depth thoughts about the NCAAs, so log on every day, with NIT starting Tuesday then the main event playing Thursday and Friday..........

      13) Please, no whining from Syracuse; when your first road game is January 7, and you lose at home to Drexel, Wichita and Oklahoma State, none of whom got into tournament, it is time to go to the NIT, and be quiet about it.

      12) Fact of the matter is this: expansion of the Big East to 16 teams has weakened the league, to the point where going 9-7 or 10-6 in conference, and playing zero non-conference away games isn't enough, especially when you lose three times at home to teams that missed the tournament.

      11) Just for the record, Syracuse is a 2-seed in the NIT, where Dean Smith, Gene Keady and CM Newton helped do seeding for the 32-team consolation tournament.

      10) Air Force, which was horrible late in year, had 30 RPI, the highest-ranked team to be left out. Syracuse had a 50 RPI.

      9) Arkansas was last team to get in; had NC State won their ACC championship game, Hogs would have gone home. Stan Heath would have been given $900,000 to go away had Hogs missed the NCAA's.

      8) 104 teams won 20+ games. Kansas State went 11-7 in the Big 12, beat Texas Tech by 21 Friday, but Texas Tech got in, K-State didn't, because they were very mediocre in December You want to get in, win more games. Simple as that.

      7) Ben Howland's UCLA team is facing Ben Howland's alma mater, Weber State, in the first round. Bruins got a two seed, but get to stay in California, so they're happy.

      6) Last year, George Mason lost twice to Hofstra, but got into NCAA's and rest is history. This year, Old Dominion got two wins against Drexel, but they got in, and Dragons didn't. Not sure what the logic is, but not much consistency. Just about everyone I heard on TV Sunday had Drexel in the field.

      5) Gonzaga beat Indiana 90-80 in the second round last year, out west. Now Hoosiers have a new coach, Gonzaga had lots of drama this season, and the two meet in first round this time Gonzaga might win, but they won't score 90 this year.

      4) The #1 seeds, assuming they win their first games, have to play the 8-9 winner in Round 2. I look at the eight teams on the 8-9 lines, and say that BYU is the best of those teams.

      3) There were eight teams who won regular season title in its conference, but lost conference tournament and didn't get in the NCAA's. Those teams automatically get into the NIT. A team like UConn didn't even make the NIT. Go figure.

      2) Notre Dame ranks 34th in pace (possessions/game); their first round opponent, Winthrop, ranks 297th (out of 336); the team that wants the slower tempo usually gets it. Irish open as a 4-point favorite over the Big South champs.

      1) I say this every year, but nobody listens; CBS has to give us what 65 teams are in tournament a lot more quickly. These are people's livelihoods we're talking about. To hold up the announcement so we can hear what Seth Davis thinks about anything is incredibly rude and stupid. Give us the field of 65, then comment; it isn't too much to ask.

                          MONDAY, MARCH 12

                          New Jersey at Memphis
The Nets come into this contest with a five-game losing streak that includes an 0-4 start to their six-game road trip. Despite getting Richard Jefferson back in the lineup, the Nets haven't been very competitive as they've lost each of the four road games by double digits, including a 16-point defeat at San Antonio (93-77) in their last outing on Saturday. Memphis did show a sign of life by ending its six-game slide with a win at Charlotte (115-107) on Saturday behind Pau Gasol's 31 points and 15 rebounds. The Grizzlies are the only team in the league that has not won back-to-back games this year, but tonight looks like a good opportunity to snap that streak and take advantage their underdog status (+2 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Memphis favored straight up by 4 1/2.
