    Six-Pack for Thursday

I'll be going over all 30 major league teams, giving stats on each of them, as we heads towards the 2007 season......... today, we look at the San Diego Padres

-- Brian Giles hit 72 homers the last four years, after hitting 149 the four years before that.

-- Cla Meredith threw 33.2 consecutive scoreless innings of relief, the longest scoreless streak in majors since 2002.

-- Greg Maddux has career playoff record of 11-14 in his 32 postseason starts.

-- Jose Cruz Jr is playing for his seventh team in last six yrs.

-- Tremendous trade; getting Josh Bard and Meredith for a backup catcher, Doug Mirabelli. Bard hit .338 in 231 ABs.

-- Padres had 3rd-oldest pitching staff in NL last year, and 2nd-oldest bunch of hitters. They'll be younger this year, with a new manager, but the NL West is getting tougher.

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

      13) 45 college basketball games Thursday, 32 Friday, all in a span of 38 hours, the best two days of the season. From New York to Anaheim, St Pete to Las Vegas, teams jockey for spot in the NCAA tournament, with pairings announced Sunday. Big-time entertainment.

      12) If you're a bubble team, win your first tournament game; no excuses for teams that go meekly in tourney games.

      11) How come Rocco Baldelli plays every day in March, when he missed 70 games last year, most often taking off in a day game after night contests? He's played just 92 games the last two seasons, but he's like Lou Gehrig so far this spring.

      10) NC-Wilmington looks dumb for letting Brad Brownell get away to Wright State; Seahawks went in tank this year; now Raiders are heading to NCAAs, in Brownell's first season.

      9) Northern Arizona's David Patten broke his cheekbone Feb 1, but scored 22 points in game 48 hours later; he had surgery on the cheekbone 48 hours after that, then played in another game 48 hours later, scoring 19 more points. Tough guy.

      8) UCLA, in Karl Dorrell's five seasons as head coach, have had four offensive coordinators, four offensive line coaches and four wide receiver coaches. Nothing like continuity.

      7) They flashed a graphic during Sun Belt title game with list of famous alumni from U of North Texas: Phyllis George, Mean Joe Greene, Norah Jones, Pat Boone, Roy Orbison and our two favorites, Dr Phil and Meat Loaf.

      6) UConn was a depressing team to watch the second half of the season; terrible offensive team. Their 0-7 mark against the spread as a Big East underdog exposed a lack of spunk.

      5) If Syracuse beats Notre Dame Thursday, they'll tie all-time record for most consecutive wins in Big East tourney (9) set by UConn a few years back.

      4) Mike Davis' first year at UAB was disappointing,, ending with 53-52 loss to Marshall in C-USA tourney, after UAB had trailed 38-24 at halftime. Following Mike Anderson's pressing system is tough act to follow, for sure.

      3) Dereck Whittenberg has quietly won five games in row; he has Fordham at 11-6 in A-14, heading into a quarterfinal game vs Rhode Island Thursday. Fordham should go to V Classic one of these years and play NC State, so Jimmy V's guards on his '83 NC State title team can oppose each other as coaches.

      2) No real big upsets so far in Championship Week, much to the delight of the bubble teams. This could be strongest set of 16-seeds ever in NCAA tournament.

      1) There will be very few coaches who lose in a conference tournament who will sleep well until they see pairings Sunday night. Unless you're top 10-15 team, there are no guarantees.

Arizona's 16 wins and four championships (1988-90, 2002) in this event are league bests. The Wildcats are 2-0 in neutral site games this year. EDGE: ARIZONA

                      Florida State vs. Clemson
The Seminoles come into this contest hot after erasing a six-point deficit in the last two minutes at Miami on Saturday and pulling out a 98-90 win in overtime. FSU has one of the best players in the ACC in Al Thornton and the senior played like it against the Hurricanes with a career-high 45 points. Clemson picked up a big win as well at Virginia Tech (75-74), but prior to that had lost seven of its last nine and hadn't won away from home since beating NC State back on January 9. The Seminoles look like a good underdog pick (+1) in this one according to Dunkel, which has FSU favored straight up by 4 1/2. Dunkel Pick: FSU (+1). Here are all of today's games.

                        Dallas at St. Louis
Dallas was already one of the worst offensive teams in the league, but the offense has really been sputtering lately. The Stars have dropped three straight while scoring only three goals over that span. Dallas' latest loss was a 4-0 shutout at the hands of San Jose, which enabled the Sharks to move ahead of the Stars in the standings. The Blues looked to throw in the towel after dealing away Keith Tkachuk and Bill Guerin, but are a respectable 2-1-1 since the trades. St. Louis looks like a good underdog pick in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Blues favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: St. Louis (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
