    Six-Pack for Wednesday

I'll be going over all 30 major league teams, giving stats on each of them, as we heads towards the 2007 season......... today, we look at the Florida Marlins

-- Marlins had an exciting team last year, but they still drew 15% less than the God-awful Devil Rays, which isn't good.

-- One Marlin hit a grand slam last year-- Dontrelle Willis.

-- Florida rookies hit 112 homers last year, setting a record that was previously held by the '82 Twins (106).

-- Hanley Ramirez had 51 stolen bases, 74 extra base hits; think the Red Sox regret that trade?

-- Marlins were 11-31, then got back to .500 Sept 3 (68-68), making them only team in modern baseball history to do so They faded with a 10-16 finish, fired their manager, but still, they had an interesting, moderately successful season.

-- Josh Johnson is already out with bad elbow this spring; it is going to be very difficult for Marlins to come anywhere close to the limited success they had last season.

      Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week thoughts.....

      13) At 3:00 Tuesday afternoon, it was 7 degrees in America's second-favorite city, with a whipping wind that made it feel like it was 15-20 below zero. Meanwhile, in Tucson, watching White Sox-Rockies on the dish, it was 78 degrees with bright sunshine. I have to be stupid to willingly live here.

      12) The danger of having mid-major conference tournament at pre-determined site is if the home team gets KO'd early, there is strong possibility of an empty gym. Semifinal doubleheader in Lafayette at Sun Belt tournament drew 524 fans. Eeesh.

      11) The WCC's event was in Portland; Pilots went out in first round, but league was lucky they had Gonzaga in the finals; they packed Chiles Center with 4,621 fans.

      10) Mike Francesa said Tuesday he wouldn't be surprised if Romeo Crennel wasn't the Browns' coach at start of season; he says the situation in Cleveland is very ugly. Can't think of many NFL coaches who got fired between March-September, other than George Allen, in his second tour with the Rams; he got fired after losing first two preseason games in '78.

      9) Michael Eisner, former CEO of Disney, heads a group that bought out the Topps trading card company for $238 million. That buys an awful lot of bubble gum.

      8) Weird seeing Darin Erstad in White Sox uniform; he played 1,320 games for the Angels, before moving on this winter.......

      7) White Sox announcers were talking about how Dick Allen, who was a great hitter, would not swing the bat in exhibition games until he had two strikes on him; that was how he got his timing down for the regular season.

      6) Of the fourteen baseball expansion teams since 1961, only the Padres 567-881 (.392) had a worse winning percentage in their first nine seasons than the Devil Rays (579-876, .398).

      5) Good news for the Devil Rays: The other thirteen teams all had winning records by their 11th season, except for Seattle, which didn't win more than they lost until their 15th season.

      4) The whole Carmelo/Iverson thing isn't going to well out in Denver; George Karl isn't the right coach to merge two stars like this. Plus, coaching in the NBA is insane to begin with. Karl would probably be a better college coach.

      3) Oral Roberts has two kids, Green and Tutt, both of whom scored 2,000+ points in their careers; they're just seventh set of teammates in NCAA history to do that. ORU is coached by Scott Sutton, one of Eddie Sutton's sons. It was basket that gave Tutt 2,000 points that was game-winning hoop for ORU.

      2) Leonard Davis, lineman Dallas just signed, is the youngest of 22 children. Imagine Christmas morning in that house????

      1) There is report on deadspin.com that Peyton Manning was paid $200,000 to attend a birthday party. Please Lord, let this report be false, unless he donated at least half the money to charity. No one could possibly be this money hungry.
