    Six-Pack for Tuesday

I'll be going over all 30 major league teams, giving stats on each of them, as we heads towards the 2007 season......... today, we look at the Atlanta Braves

-- Braves drafted 54 players last June, 37 of them pitchers.

-- Of those 54 players, 26 came from junior colleges, 21 from high school. They prefer to develop their own guys, while other teams likes colleges to do some of it for them.

-- Tim Hudson is 27-21 in two years with Braves, allowing 429 hits in 411.1 IP. With Oakland, he was 92-39, giving up 1,134 hits in 1,242 innings, and he faced the DH there.

-- Andruw Jones' birthday is April 23; Chipper Jones' April 24. Chipper was on the DL three times last season.

-- Jeff Francoeur has 34 walks in 908 at-bats, not very good.

-- John Smoltz has pitched 207 postseason innings in his tremendous career; he has 193 wins, 154 saves. He is surely a Hall of Famer, once he retires.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.............

      13) Syracuse-UConn is first round game Wednesday with big ramifications; could be play-in game for the Orange. Big East is too big; St John's plays Marquette in first round, but teams didn't meet during the season. How can that be?

      12) Just for the record, attendance for Creighton-So. Illinois in St Louis Sunday was 22,612. People in New York like to call Madison Square Garden the mecca of college basketball, but no way its true. Not even close. St John's-Georgetown drew less at MSG this year than the play-in game does in Dayton.

      11) ESPN ran a special on NBDL, focusing on former Orange star Gerry McNamara, who now toils in obscurity, trying for a shot at the NBA. He is playing for team in Bakersfield, where he is coached by former UCLA coach Jim Harrick.

      10) With Siena losing in MAAC final, and Albany playing at Vermont Saturday, if Great Danes lose, would NIT people pit Albany vs Siena in a first round NIT game? It would draw a big crowd, probably around 10,000, being local rivalry. Yes, Albany-Siena game outdrew Georgetown-St John's this year.

      9) You will seldom see one player take over a game way Eric Maynor did for VCU Monday night. George Mason had ball and five-point lead with 2:00 left, but Maynor twice stripped ball in open court and scored layups, adding a FT to tie game then he hit leaner in lane to give Rams lead for good. I am not kidding-- it was one of best 2:00 I've ever seen a kid play.

      8) Kei Igawa had an odd debut for Bronx Bombers; he struck out three guys, but also allowed two hits, walked three. Not exactly $26 million worth, but only an exhibition game.

It just dawned on me: the Red Sox paid $100M for one freakin' guy, then his first start was against Boston College!!!!

      7) By the way, if you want to sit in one of the 100 or so prime seats behind home plate at Bronx exhibition games, tickets are going for only $190. For one. Face value.

      6) Cowboys signed Brad Johnson to three-year deal, giving Tony Romo a mentor and some competition for starting job.

      5) Patriots are paying Adalius Thomas $107,000 just to be in the team's offseason workout program. Football is year-round business now, not just July-January. I live on $43,000 a year; this guy gets $107,000 to work out on his vacation. Nice.

      4) Whoever ran the NASCAR telecast from Mexico Sunday on ESPN Deportes was in love with Connie Montoya, wife of Juan Pablo Montoya, the race winner; during time I was in a sports bar, near end of race, she got more air time than he did, and he was winning the race. I'm not complaining, though.

      3) Harvard fired their basketball coach; now there's a difficult place to win. You have to have supreme confidence in your abilities to coach in Ivy League, because not many coaches move on to better jobs, and only Penn wins consistently.

      2) Great job by Mark Few, who righted a sinking ship, after he lost his best big man to drug charges, then had his win streak at home snapped at 50 games. Gonzaga has now won six of its last eight games, and is in NCAAs for ninth year in a row.

      1) The people who run Santa Clara should be ashamed of the way they forced Dick Davey out of his job. They guy gave 30 years of his life to Santa Clara, and they tell him he needs to retire. Very classy; good luck finding a better replacement.

Penn has already wrapped up Ivy title, Princeton is ending yet another dismal season in worst era of their program's history; Quakers won first meeting, 48-35 Feb 13 (-13); both teams shot under 35% for game. Penn was 15-23 from line, Tigers 3-6, 4-19 beyond arc. If Harvard changed coaches, will Princeton, too?

        Conference Tournaments

        Horizon finals

Butler waxed Wright State 73-42 at home Jan 6 (-15) but lost on this floor 77-65 Feb 10 (-3.5), as Raiders made 24-33 FTs, hit on 54.5% of FGs. Wright won 10 of last 11 games, fourteen in row on this floor. Butler is 4-3 in last seven games; they are 22-0 if they allow less than 68 points, 3-5 if they don't.

        Sun Belt finals
-- North Texas won six of last seven games; they're #5 seed in Sun Belt, facing Arkansas State team that won last six games, is led by stellar JC transfer guard Banks. ASU swept North Texas this season, 84-60 at home Jan 6 (+1.5). 74-71 in Denton Feb 22 (+8.5), after trailing 40-29 at half- they're a #2 seed, playing on a neutral court.

        WAC first round
San Jose beat Idaho twice this season, 68-65 in Moscow Feb 1 (even), 62-57 at home three days ago (-9); Vandals were 11-52 in two games from arc. Both teams shot under 36% in Saturday's game. Idaho lost last 12 games, with underdog 5-1-2 vs spread in last eight. Spartans lost four of their last five games.

        Mountain West first round
New Mexico coach McKay is lame duck, always tough to back them; Lobos lost four in row, six of last seven games, but win was 74-58 vs TCU, when they forced 20 turnovers, hit 11-25 on arc. Frogs won other meeting, 64-52 after trailing 33-28 at half. Lobos made 22-55 3's, only 14-22 FTs in the two series games. TCU split its last four games after losing previous 10 games.

        Big Sky semifinals
Northern Arizona won last four games, six of last seven; a year ago, Montana upset them in Flagstaff in this tournament, 73-60. This year, road team won both series games, with Griz winning 74-71 at NAU (+5); Lumberjacks won 88-81 in Missoula Feb 22, even though Griz hit 14-25 from arc. Griz is 4-5 last nine games.

Weber State has played once in last 20 days, and that was loss in Sacramento (103-88); host Wildcats beat Portland State twice 75-65 at home (-4.5), then 64-62 in Portland Feb 8 (+4.5); they've held Vikings to 40.7%/38.1% in the two games, but made only 5-22 from arc in the two games. Portland State won three games in row, is 3-3 as Big Sky road underdog.

Toronto has won three in a row over the Wizards, including both meetings this season. Washington, however, is trying for a sixth consecutive home victory over the Raptors. SLIGHT EDGE: WIZARDS
The Raptors have lost three of four games, including back-to-back games for the first time since dropping three straight from December 29-January 3. EDGE: WIZARDS
Toronto All-Star forward Chris Bosh is averaging 29 points and 11.5 rebounds in two games against Washington this season. EDGE: RAPTORS

The Knicks have played the last five games without leading rebounder David Lee (sprained right ankle) and three straight without reserve guard Nate Robinson (stomach virus). Swingman Quentin Richardson, who averages 13.1 points and scored 30 on Friday, left Saturday's game after 10 minutes with a sore lower back. EDGE: SONICS - CHECK STATUS

New York is 13-3 ATS in their last 16 home games.

Los Angeles Lakers at Minnesota Timberwolves (8 PM ET)
Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has led the Lakers in scoring in each of his last 15 games. He is averaging 29.9 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists over his last 11 contests, but the Lakers are just 3-8 during that stretch. EDGE: T-WOLVES
Minnesota has lost six of seven - including three straight - going 6-13 since firing coach Dwayne Casey and replacing him with Randy Wittman. EDGE: LAKERS

The Lakers are 1-6 ATS in the last seven meetings.

The Mavericks have won 12 of their last 13 games against the Nets. Dallas defeated New Jersey 92-75 on Dec. 5 as it held the Nets to 35.1 percent shooting, including just 2-for-12 from 3-point range. BIG EDGE: MAVS
The Nets are 3-10 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
The UNDER is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

New Orleans Hornets at Denver Nuggets (9 PM ET)
New Orleans has displayed great scoring balance against Denver, placing six players in double figures in both victories this season. EDGE: HORNETS
The Denver frontcourt should have its hands full with Tyson Chandler, who is second in the NBA in rebounding with 12.5 per game. Chandler has posted 12 straight double-doubles, averaging 13.8 points and 16.5 rebounds during that span. EDGE: HORNETS

11 Bracket Picking Rules You Shouldnt Break!

Note: Unless otherwise noted, all stats span from 1985 (the year the tournament expanded to 64 teams) to present.

                        1st Round:

                        * Be very selective picking any team below a #12 seed.
                        #16 seeds are 0 for 88. #15 seeds are 4 for 88. #13 and #14 seeds are less than 19% combined.

                        * Dont be shy about picking upsets when #12 through #9 seeds are involved
Look especially hard at picking #12 seeds; they have won 11 of 24 matchups vs. #5 seeds the last six years. #9 seeds have a winning record vs. #8 seeds.

                        2nd Round:
                        * Advance #1 seeds almost automatically they win their first two games 86% of the time.

                        * Keep advancing the #12 and #10 seeds you picked to win in Round One.
They win almost half the time in Round Two (14 of 29 for #12 seeds; 17 of 35 for #10 seeds).

                        * Rarely pick a #13 seed or lower to win in Round Two.
Only 9% of teams advancing past Round Two are seeded that low.

                        Sweet 16:
                        * Advance exactly three #1 seeds into the Elite 8
No reason to buck the math: 70% of #1 seeds advance into the 4th round (thats a higher percentage than #5 seeds who win a single game)!

                        * Advance no team lower than a #12 seed into the Elite 8
                        NOT ONE has ever advanced!

                        Elite Eight:
                        * Advance ONE or TWO #1 seeds to the Final Four.
Amazingly, exactly one or two #1 seeds have made the Final Four 18 of the last 22 years.

                        * Advance no team lower than a #8 seed to the Final Four.
Only 2 of 88 Final Four teams have been seeded lower than #8.

                        Final Four:
                        * Advance NO team below a 6th seed to the Championship game.
Not a single one has made it in the last 21 years.

                        Championship Game:
                        * Pick a #4 seed or higher to win it all.
For 18 straight years the champion has been a 4 seed or higher!

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5 Team Factors That Matter the Most

                        #1) Margin of Victory
Statistically speaking, this factor matters twice as much as the second most important factor so ignore at your own risk. Margin of victory is simply the average number of points that a team wins or loses by. Why is this important? Because with only 30 or so games a year, getting lucky in even a handful of close games can make a team look much better record-wise than it truly is. But if a team consistently wins by large margins, you can be more certain youve got a real winner. The key number is 15; teams whose margin of victory is greater than 15 points do exceedingly well in the NCAA Tournament.

                        #2) Coaching Experience
The Big Dance is an entirely different experience than the regular season, requiring a different approach from the coach. It makes sense that a coach who is new to the Tournament wouldnt know as well how to handle it. The numbers strongly back up this rationale: The average number of tourney appearances for coaches in the tournament is 5.6; the average for teams reaching the Final Four is 9.3 coaching appearances; the average for the team who wins it all is 11.5 coaching appearances (more than double the tournament average). Avoid rookie tourney coaches, and stick with the old lions who have seen it all before.

                        #3) Team Experience
The Big Dance is not just different for the coaches, its different for the entire organization and having tourney experience is key. This concept extends even beyond the players. Consider all the details that need to be handled, from travel plans, to the type of hotels to stay at, to what equipment the trainer needs to bring. And dont underestimate the intangible of confidence a player walking onto the court knowing that he belongs on the biggest stage. That only comes with experience. The average number of consecutive tourney appearances for teams in the tournament is 3; the average for teams reaching the Final Four is more than double that!

#4) Having a superstar to count on
Since 1979, every NCAA champion except one has had at least one All-American; thats an amazing 27 out of 28 years! The logic makes perfect sense: the tourney is a rollercoaster that requires an on-the-floor leader. On the way to winning six straight games a team will likely face a number of make or break situations, and having the alpha dog on the floor in those spots makes all the difference.

                        #5) Reliable front court scoring
Centers and Forwards who play near the basket account for front court scoring, and their play is usually a difference maker especially for teams looking to advance deep into the tournament. Relying upon outside shooting is a losing proposition during the Big Dance: first, because the games are played in unfamiliar, spacious arenas, typically with difficult shooting backgrounds. Second, even if great shooters are able to overcome these disadvantages, doing so game after game after game is typically too much to ask. A cold night is bound to happen and it only takes one to be eliminated. Front court scoring, on the other hand, involves lay-ups and slam dunks, shots that are not as affected by surroundings or nerves. Teams who receive at least 60% of their scoring from the front court have historically over-achieved in the NCAA tournament. Stick with such teams, and you will too!

                              TCU vs. New Mexico
The Horned Frogs finished last in the Mountain West, but didn't play like it over the last two weeks of the regular season with wins over Air Force (71-66) and Wyoming (77-58), and a respectable loss at San Diego State (56-51) in which they held the Aztecs to just 32.8 percent shooting. New Mexico struggled down the stretch with four straight losses and six losses in its last seven games. The only win for the Lobos came at home against TCU (74-58) on Feb. 17, but the Horned Frogs had already held serve with a win at home over the Lobos back in January (64-52). TCU looks to be the hotter team right now and should take advantage of the Vegas line (+4 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the game even. Dunkel Pick: TCU (+4 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
