  • Question the Forum

What does it mean when the line is -115?

    For example:

    Team A vs B

    A is -5 but at -115
    B is + 5 at -105

Is this mean more money is going into A?

If so, why not make the line -5.5 at -110 then?

    Thanks

OK, in general, I would say that more money has been coming in on Team A, and the book is hoping to get a little action on Team B, so they are offering it at a reduced price. Now, if you still want to play Team A, you are going to be forced to pay a premium.
I think some books, mostly recreational (Bodog is probably the best example) make the switch to higher juice on the side the public is likely to play. Then, when the public plays that side anyway, they will move the line.
    Records:

    NCAA Hoops (38-34-2, +4.59*)
    NFL Sides (34-25, +12.15*)
    NFL Totals (18-14-1, +8.23*)
    NCAA Foots Plays (65-48-4, +21.47*)
    NBA Plays (4-1-0, +5.92*)

Sometimes you will see the line a lot higher than -115(rather than move it to the next highest live).
In hockey for example you can regularly see such lines on totals as over 5 1/2 -140.

I think its the offshores trying to get even on a game TK, the ultimate goal for any book is even and win the vig. So i see that as their effort to get more money on team B. JMO

great explanation.....that line is fixing to move again, after the books get their sides (bets) balanced out.....all they want is the Vig.....kapt

All kinds of line movement......could be the public or could be the sharps or could be both....reverse line movement is when a play looks enticing i.e team a gets 60% and is a -5 yet the books adjust the line to a 4.....I dont have access to these numbers anymore but I can get em if needed......I think BigWeiner has this info and maybe he can give more insight and maybe even the Greek

The move to -115 or -120 is generally public money. When the line itself moves a point or more within a short period of time, that's smart money.
