    Six-Pack for Sunday

-- Congrats to the Allegheny Gators, who won their fourth game in row Saturday, clinching home court for first round of their playoffs, which start Tuesday. Gators beat the #6 ranked D-III team in America Saturday, 62-57.

-- The NFL Combine starts Wednesday, and Chargers stll don't have a coach. GM Smith says he and the new coach will discuss personnel matters; why didn't he discuss them with the last coach, the 6th winningest coach ever?

-- Speaking of which, rumors are swirling about argument between Cam Cameron and Marty during the Patriot game, about whether to go for it on fourth down or not. If what was printed was true, things got fairly ugly.

-- When Tiki Barber rips Tom Coughlin every five minutes, wonder how Giant lineman Snee feels about that, since the head coach is also his father-in-law?

-- They are playing college baseball already down south; the season doesn't end until June sometime. Those players can't be very good students; they play lot of games.

-- Two feet of snow collapsed the roof at a local golf dome, which gets used for lot of indoor soccer tournaments. It is very lucky that no one was injured.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college hoop Saturday

      13) After just watching college hoop for 14 hours, 25 minutes, here are my obsevations, typed through bloodshot eyes that got two breaks today, one to answer the door when the pizza guy came, and other one for a shower...............

      12) Last game of the day was the worst loss, as Ohio U blew 47-29 halftime lead, losing at New Mexico State, as NBA star Reggie Theus works his way towards a high profile D-I job in the not-too-distant future. His teams play hard, and he is one terrific recruiter.

      11) Appalachian State was impressive in winning at Wichita, but the Shockers are now 8-11 in their last nineteen games, after a 9-0 start. Disappointing season for Wichita, which is paying Coach Turgeon something like $750,000 a year now.

      10) Georgetown is really good; they were dreadful for 16:00 at Villanova, then got hot at end of half, and pulled out tight win in Philly, their ninth win in a row. Kid even hit a 55-footer at end of half to cut Villanova's lead to 28-27.

      9) Vanderbilt played great in upsetting Florida; the one thing I kept thinking watching the Gators lose? "This is probably the best thing to happen to them. They needed a loss." And I still believe that; a loss can be a wakeup call to a good team.

      8) 9:30 into their game at Alabama Saturday, Kentucky had a total of two points; they rallied in second half, but have now lost three games in row, and are offensively challenged.

      7) Hofstra's Big 3 of Stokes-Agudio-Rivera scored 54 points in 65-64 win over Holy Cross, which is why Hofstra is going to struggle to win CAA tourney; absolutely no depth.

      6) Washington has now lost 32 straight road games vs teams in top 10; their last such win was in 1974.

      5) Vance Wallberg came to Pepperdine after going 133-11 at a junior college in Fresno; this season, his Waves are playing a style they are totally unsuited for, and are 7-20. Luckily for Wallberg, he has reinforcements on the way, so 7-20 will not be happening in Malibu again for a long time.

      4) Eye-catching score of the day: Michigan State 44, Iowa 17, at the half. Offensively-challenged Spartans hit 10 of 22 treys, ripped the Hawkeyes by 32. Exactly how did Steve Alford get a contract extension from Iowa? What has he done there?

      3) Someone explain to me why Santa Clara is forcing its coach to retire? Looks like Dick Davey is still heckuva coach, as his Broncos are leading the WCC standings. It will be interesting to see what genius they replace Davey with.

      2) Boston College coach Al Skinner's playing career ended in training camp of Detroit Pistons in the late 70's, when he got cut by a coach named Dick Vitale. Yes, him.......

      1) How in the name of Pete is Vitale nominated for Basketball Hall of Fame, but not Jerry Tarkanian?
If you tell me Tark cheated, 1) Prove it, and 2) Eddie Sutton is nominated, which erases that argument altogether. No Tark in the Hall of Fame is plain stupid, or as my chemistry teacher in high school used to say, "That is nonsensical."

                  Maryland at Clemson
Clemson was the last Division I team to remain unbeaten. But when the Tigers suffered their first loss of the season at Maryland back on Jan. 13, it started a slide that has seen Clemson drop six of their last eight, including a bad 67-65 loss to lower-rated Wake Forest on Wednesday. Today the Tigers face that same Maryland team that has had some bumps of its own. Gary Williams' troops lost at home to Virginia on Feb. 6 to drop their record to just 3-6 in the ACC. But a win against Duke (72-60) has served as a spark and the Terps kept the momentum in a 15-point win at NC State (85-70) on Wednesday. Maryland looks like a good underdog pick (+4) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Terps favored straight up by 3. Dunkel Pick: Maryland (+4). Here are all of today's games.

                    Minnesota at St. Louis
Minnesota is coming off a 4-1 win at Nashville on Saturday that moved the Wild to within a point of division-leaders Vancouver and Calgary in the Northwest. The win has capped off an impressive run that has seen Minnesota win six of its last eight games since beating the Blues on Jan. 30. Pavol Demitra and Marian Gaborik led the charge in that game and the two have continued to play solid hockey. The Blues also beat Nashville (1-0) their last time out, but are having trouble scoring especially at home where St. Louis has scored just one goal in three of its last four games.
