  • Vick Fined $5,000 for Sloppy Socks

    11/1/02

(AP) - FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) - Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was fined $5,000 this week by the NFL. His offense: wearing red socks in Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints.

The league said Wednesday that Vick violated its uniform dress code. Wide receiver Shawn Jefferson also was fined $5,000 - for shoddy shoes.

Such fines are common, with violations ranging from untucked jerseys to unlicensed apparel. Players learn on Wednesdays from the NFL office in New York, via courier.

"Every Wednesday around noon, we peek around the corner, looking for FedEx," Falcons cornerback Ray Buchanan said. "We went from public school to private school ... forget private, we're in a boarding school."

Vick was fined because his white oversocks were rolled down, exposing red undersocks from ankle to knee. NFL guidelines say the exterior sock must be white at least to the mid-lower leg.

"They got me," Vick said. "I can't believe it."

Jefferson was guilty of wearing the wrong color shoes. Teams must designate their color before the season, and the Falcons chose white. Jefferson has been wearing black shoes covered with white tape.
