  • Some info on the Boise St. / Albany game

UAlbany (18-8) might not be that lucky in a game to be televised on ESPNU at 9 p.m.
Boise State (14-10) hails from the Western Athletic Conference, which is considered superior to UAlbany's league, the America East Conference.

The Broncos are 11-1 at Taco Bell Arena this season and boast an NBA prospect in senior guard Coby Karl, the son of Denver Nuggets coach and former Albany Patroons coach George Karl.

"We have our hands full," UAlbany coach Will Brown said.

That would have been true in any case, but especially after UAlbany's travel woes the past two days. Wednesday's snowstorm forced the team to board a bus at 6 a.m. Thursday for a seven-hour ride to Washington, D.C., where they caught two flights to Idaho.

The starters and head coach Will Brown were due to arrive in Boise at midnight Thursday; the reserves were to stay over in Minneapolis and join their teammates in Boise this morning.

UAlbany will have 11 players, Brown and assistant coaches Eric Eaton, Chad O'Donnell and Pat Filien. Eaton joined the team from Denver, where he was on a recruiting trip. Filien flew out of Albany Thursday afternoon.

Junior guard Michael Knight and freshman forward Mike Yocum stayed behind because there weren't enough tickets on short notice.

Although UAlbany has excuses to be drained tonight, Brown said his team had better not use them.

"If we feel sorry for ourselves, we're going to take a long trip and get a beating," he said. "We need to be focused and prepared."

Besides the play of Karl, Boise's leading scorer at 15.6 points per game, UAlbany must deal with a strong Bronco inside game.

In 6-foot-9 forward Matt Nelson and 6-6 forward Reggie Larry, Brown said Boise State has a frontcourt better than any in the America East including Vermont, which exploited the Great Danes' weakness in a 67-63 win on Sunday.

"It presents a major problem," Brown said. "We're going to have to give them some different looks and do a better job than we did against Vermont defending the low post. Otherwise, we're going to get in foul trouble and they're going to get easy baskets."

There was nothing easy about the trip, which raises the issue of whether it's even worthwhile to travel so far to play on a network (ESPNU) that's only available on satellite in the Capital Region.

"You might question that when it's so much trouble, so much money going out (there)," senior guard Jason Siggers said. "But when you talk about what happens if we win, it really helps our RPI and our overall team morale, so I think the benefits outweigh (the negatives)."

As of Monday, UAlbany was ranked 98th nationally and Boise State 116th in the RPI, a computer formula used to select and seed teams in the NCAA Tournament.

Regardless of tonight's result, the Great Danes will have five days off before they return to league action at Stony Brook on Thursday.
