        It is Official ...

Flyers trade Forsberg to PredsESPN.com news services

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Flyers finally traded Peter Forsberg, sending the star center to the Central Division-leading Nashville Predators on Thursday night for forward Scottie Upshall, defenseman Ryan Parent and two draft picks.

Forsberg, slowed this season by chronic right foot problems, can become an unrestricted a free agent at the end of the season, and the Flyers decided to get some value for the former NHL MVP rather than risk losing him for nothing.

"We went around and around with Peter for a fair amount of time about making a commitment to us for future years and it appears that he could not and would not do that going forward," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said.

"It was our belief in the long run for the betterment of the franchise for the future, this was something we needed to do. The timing of it may not have been great, but it was a good deal. A deal we thought we couldn't pass up," he said.

The 33-year-old Swede had 11 goals and 29 assists in 40 games for the Flyers this season, his second with Philadelphia after 10 years with Quebec and Colorado.

"Peter Forsberg is one of the NHL's most complete players and the ultimate competitor, a consistent winner who has year in and year out been a difference-maker in the Stanley Cup playoffs," Predators general manager David Poile said.

"He strengthens our club up the middle and will provide another battle-tested, veteran voice. Adding a player of this caliber also sends a strong message to our fans that the Nashville Predators are prepared to compete at the highest level," Poile said.

Forsberg has visited with doctors around the globe to find out why his foot hasn't felt right in his skate, the health issue mostly responsible for keeping him out 16 games this season. He met with team chairman Ed Snider and general manager Paul Holmgren this week to talk about his future.

Forsberg was a late scratch for Philadelphia's game against Toronto on Thursday night. The NHL-worst Flyers are 0-13-3 without Forsberg in the lineup this season.

Since Forsberg returned from an All-Star break trip to visit a foot specialist in Sweden, he has three goals and nine assists in nine games.

Forsberg is in the final months of a two-year, $11.5 million contract he signed after leaving Colorado, and while he had long maintained his first priority was to re-sign with the Flyers, contenders were actively asking the organization about his availability.

Upshall, 23, has two goals, one assist and 18 penalty minutes in 14 games this season. He missed 22 games with a groin strain suffered at Columbus on Nov. 15. In 77 career regular-season games over parts of four NHL seasons, Upshall, who was drafted in the first round (sixth overall) by the Predators in 2002, has 11 goals, 18 assists and 52 penalty minutes.

Parent, 19, has recorded three goals, six assists and 62 penalty minutes in 32 games for the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League this season. In four seasons with the Storm, Parent has 10 goals, 45 assists and 238 penalty minutes in 216 regular-season games. He was a member of the Canadian national team that won gold at the 2006 and 2007 World Junior Championships. He was drafted by Nashville in the first round (18th overall) of the 2005 entry draft.

In addition to Upshall and Parent, the Flyers received Nashville's first- and third-round selections in the 2007 entry draft.

              I think it's a great move.

I've always felt if you're not winning with a high priced aging superstar you should trade him while they have some value.
