February 14, 2007 -- TAMPA - Mariano Rivera a Red Sox? It could happen.
Sitting in his car outside Legends Field yesterday, Rivera was asked by The Post if he could be Boston's closer next year.
"You never know," said Rivera, who is determined to become a free agent after the World Series since the Yankees didn't react to his December request for a two-year contract extension.
The 37-year-old Rivera, who makes $10.5 million this season, didn't hear from the Yankees yesterday, one day after he said it might be time to move on. His agent, Fernando Cuza, explained Rivera wouldn't talk about a contract during the season.
"Not that I know of," Rivera said when asked if meetings are planned with the Yankees.
GM Brian Cashman said he is willing to talk to Rivera about his contract situation but didn't say he would offer him a deal.
Cuza will be in Tampa today but not at the complex. He is meeting Rivera at his house.
Like all pitchers and catchers, Rivera reported yesterday and will take a physical today. The first workout will be tomorrow. Rivera played catch with Jorge Posada yesterday at the minor league complex.
I'm sorry, but no closer is worth $15 million a year.... but, imagine if Mo goes to the sox.....WOW!!
